If Rafa fails to win French Open in 2016 , I don't see him winning any other slam in 2016, considering he will 31 yrs old next year , with lots and mileage and next gen coming up, his chances of winning anything substantial would be close to nil in 2017 and so on.

So, should he hang up his boots if he fails in 2016 RG ?

No, Nadal should still carry on playing look at Federer who has won 2 slams in 6 1/2 year.

Let him decide and RG is not the end of world, AO conditions also suits him.

Depends. If he loses first round in Australia and at Roland Garros, and does nothing in the minor events, maybe he should think about it at the end of 2016. If he is runner-up in both Australia and Roland Garros, and loses to Djokovic in epic five setters, then of course not. Especially if he's picked up a masters title or too. That would show he's still got it, but his main rival has stepped it up. It would be silly not to keep trying to turn that around if that were the situation.

strange timing for a RG thread... but no. truth is Nadal is in a form now that he didn't achieve until mid-year in '15. Barring Novak (maybe GOATING fognini on hard), Rafa can beat anyone down under and in Paris as well. Let's not forget the Olympics in Brazil, which I believe will be on the dirt as well.

na I mean its an individual choice obviously, but if you are talking about the time when it would make sense objectively from a results standpoint, I'd say if he fails to make any slam QF this year and doesn't qualify for WTF, then it would make sense at the end of the year.

Fails to win is a strange concept. It sort of suggests he should barring something unexpected. I would not use it of Djokovic or anyone else

No. Look at Federer.

And the chances of Rafa still playing and making GS finals at the age of 34?

A GAZILLIONSQUILLION TO ONE! Yeah baby, thats a one followed by a bazillion zeroes!

ie: 1 in 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000.

Why?

If he keeps skipping months without playing he will be in better shape than Djokovic, who plays 24/7 to catch up with him.

Nadal's injuries are highly overrated (not without the PR stunts of Team Nadal).

People should retire under two conditions
1) Don't like work
2) Have enough money

Rafa has had #2 since about 2005. Only he can decide when #1 happens
