IG Prestige Pro VS Graphene Speed Pro

Currently use an IG Prestige Pro. Play it stock, other than having replaced the leather grip with something lighter and tackier Weighs in at 340g with a dampener. Absolutely love it, Rolls Royce of a stick. However, every man and his dog has told me to get a more forgiving racquet, a lighter racquet, a racquet with a bigger head. Failing that, a Babolat APD.

To be fair, I did hit for about 6 hours over 3 session with an APD strung at 58ibs with Luxilon Big Bangers. I played like an absolute monster, could do pretty much anything I wanted. However, it all felt a bit wrong somehow, not that much like I thought tennis should have felt like. In fact, my arm felt a bit like a robots arm whilst hitting with it. And I know that particular set-up would destroy my arm over time.

Back to the Prestige for time being then.

More recently, I did 3, 3 hr sessions with the new Graphene Speed MP. Nice stick: very manoeuvrable, could swing it crazy-fast and hit some vicious topspin with it. But it lacked plowthrough and stability after the Prestige, and I felt like I was getting bullied by people who hit hard. Where the Prestige feels like you're onto the battlefield with a rocket launcher, the MP feels more like you're rocking up with a Kalashnikov instead. According the TW University, these racquets have more or less the same size sweetspot, but the Prestige is definitely more demanding to play with. I wanted to want the MP, to buy it and it be the holy grail for me. But, alas, back to the Prestige for the time being.

The more I read about the Graphene Speed Pro, though, the more I'm thinking this could be the perfect racquet for me, at least on paper anyway. Touch lighter, bigger head, seemingly huge sweetspot, I also prefer closed rather than open strings generally speaking. The swingweight is a concern in that it's a bit higher than the Prestige, which is not exactly a light racquet, but I guess I won't know until I try it. I think I read someone on this forum say the G-Pro is very similar to the Prestige, just a bit easier to use. That really excited me. Unfortunately It's more or less impossible to demo now e in my neck of the woods, but I should be getting my hands on one in abut two weeks.

Anyone got any thoughts on the differences or similarities between these sticks? I know the G-Pro got a great review at TW, but would be good to get some first hand thoughts as well.

The polarization is very noticeable on the Graphene Speed Pro. I couldn't get used to it. You have to have a fast swing to maximize the benefits of the polarization. I didn't care for the feel either, but that might have been due to the Head FXP Tour string on my demo which I find pretty numb.

I think the IG Prestige Pro is the better all around racquet, but I play singles and doubles and like to come to the net.

I wish they had just made a heavier version of the Graphene Speed MP and called it the Pro. The Graphene Speed MP is very easy to play with. I found the Graphene Speed Pro more finicky.

If you want a cross between a prestige and APD, Speed Pro is a good way to go.

It is a polarized stick which makes it whippy per weight and is great for a player with developed stroke looking to both drive and hit with a lot of spin.

For flat drivers it may be a bit too much power, not enough stability and less than plush feel. For full western spinsters it may be too low of a launch angle, but if you want a racket that does both Speed Pro is great.

I have +10 grams on top of the loop and 10g of silicone in the handle, for even more polarization and plow.

Yeah I totally agree with your thoughts about the polarization of the Pro. It's the first 18x20 string pattern I hit with that has good power and balls don't land short but I couldn't get use to the balance of the racquet. I also don't like polarized racquet which to me feels sluggish.

The Graphene Speed MP swings great but lacks oomph and I also think if they had made a heavier version, that would be the racquet of choice for me. I don't like adding lead tape since it takes a while to get the right amount and it might also throw off that nice balance the Graphene Speed currently has.

I've owned both. I think the spec differences between the two says most of it. I find the 18x20 pattern and higher stiffness speed pro is more precise and has more pop. It is more powerful as the higher SW would suggest. Sweet spot is larger. The speed pro feels lighter yet swings faster.

The prestige pro offers a bit more stability but the speed pro stability is adequate so I find this a moot point.

All in all I find the speed pro to be more forgiving, precise, easier to control and provide more pop than the prestige pro. Just as the specs and power maps indicate.

I'm using full 4g at 52 lb on the speed pro. Highly recomend an extended demo.

demo.

Hard not to love the above! On paper at least, it seems to be the ideal racquet for me. I love the TWU data on the sweetspot size - seems to be much bigger than the IGPP - in fact way up there with Extreme Pro 2.0, and certainly bigger than the G-MP. I also really like the idea that the G-Pro is whippier. My IGPP is a touch more slugglish than I'd like.

I don't fully understand what the feeling of playing with a polarized racquet is like – if anyone wants to give me an idea that would be cool.

Generally agree with above comments about the G-MP. It was really easy to play with, but after my headlight IGPP I felt that the weight distribution seemed too focussed in the handle and the tip, and consequently the throat was a touch too lightweight. I know this is the basic idea with the new Graphene construction, but I'm hoping the more headlight G-Pro will feel more headlight like my IGPP. Certainly the specs at 6pts hl suggest that will be the case.

Nice hitting by the way. Where is it that you were playing?

I've actually been playing with the Youtek Prestige Pro for 3 years now and have loved it, but my Head rep brought me a bag of the new Graphene demo's and I immediately fell in love with the way the Speed Pro plays. It feels amazing on my groundstrokes, crisp at the net, and solid on the serve. I already told my rep that I want 3 of them. I'm usually real weird about demoing rackets, but this one felt great from the beginning.

Anton,
Im so happy with my graphene speed pro......really nice stick....playing until now without any modification, what do you think about leather grip...could be change some polarization?

Sorry haven't tried - I already have extra 10g on the handle and I really like the way my PRO plays with current setup, so I don't want to change anything.

Finally got a look at the G-Pro today but only in a grip 2 or 5, and no demos available yet. Don't have a clue what's going on with Head's supply of this racquet in the UK. Seems like a mess.

Anyway, it felt awesome to swing – surprisingly light, whippy and manoeuvrable. The prestige Pro felt felt hefty in comparison. We weighed it at 333g but it felt 15g or so less in the hand. Also noticed the head is rounder than the G-MP, which was a surprise. And the differential in spacing in the strings between the 16x19 MP and the 18x20 Pro was huge. Very different racquets, seemingly.

Salesman said the grips 3's and 4s were coming in later this week, but anyway their are long waiting lists for the demos so am not expecting to hit with one anytime soon.

Thanks to everyone who's posted in this thread though. Still hoping the Speed Pro is going to be the one. In this lifetime, ideally.

I bought the Speed Pro after half an hour hitting against a rebound net along with a couple of other sticks (Blade 98 18x20 and Vcore xi98).

It was a close one between the Vcore and Speed Pro and would have demoed for longer but the shop didn't have stock.

I took a chance and ordered the Speed Pro and and so glad that I did - I'm coming from a Prestige MP and now can find the middle of the racquet more often especially at the net. Plenty of pop on the flat serve and am still dialling in the spin serves. Same with ground strokes - needing a bit of adjustment but my OHBH has seen an improvement in pace depth and control.

I tried the Prestige Pro hoping to find the forgiveness and power that was lacking in the MP but found it sluggish and hard to control. I even tried the new Aeropro and loved the power but hate the feel. Someone else on this board said that the Speed Pro is somewhere in between the Prestige and Aero and I agree.

Now to sell off my prestiges and stock up on some speed.

Will let you know what they say.

"Any updates buddy"

Wigmore said words to the effect of Head getting their next supply to distribute on the 15th. Try them then. Didn't see the other Head rep in the end, but will do next week.

It's a real shame Head pumped so much money into their marketing seemingly at the expense of the supply chain. I actually enjoyed their marketing campaign in the build up the Racquet's release, but any brand affiliation that built up is now dead in the water. Let's just hope the racquet is all it's cracked up to be.

And there we are.

Have a friend currently at Saddlebrook's in Florida hitting 4 hrs a day using an APD with full poly @ 58, probably dead for the most part. His arm is now shot to pieces – tennis elbow– and he has to rest all the time.

Not thinking in that context I decided to hit with exactly the same set up – but fresh poly – on Saturday. Hit for 30 mins. Arm felt a little tired afterwards but occasionally I get that - who doesn't – and didn't think much of it. Then I hit again for an hour yesterday with same set up and I could just feel it coming, my forearm was just getting worse with every shot, like it was being bitten by an animal instead of hitting a ball. After about 15 shots I called time and changed racquets.

I don't blame the racquet in and by itself, it's not Balbolat's fault at all. It's mine for not being smarter about the string choice, etc, and not heeding warnings.

Now though I have the fear about stiff racquets and poly more generally. If the flex rating of an APD is 70, and a G-Speed pro is 68, how much easier on my arm is the latter really going to be? Surely not very? Similarly, the new Instinct has a flex rating of 70. Felling worried about that as well.

In other news, have really enjoyed hitting with a heavily leaded but very rare racquet: 2012/13 ProKennex Black Ace 98. http://www.tenniswarehouse-europe.com/descpageRC-KBAL.html

Stiffness rating 63. Definitely feels noticeably softer than the racquets I'm used to, tonnes of control and a nice size sweetspot. Spin is slightly lacking, but I think I can improve that with strings and a bit of leading polarisation. well worth a look if you can get your hands on one.

It bears repeating, but the Graphene Revs---Instinct and Speed---are the hidden gems in the lineup. Lower RA stiffness (59 for the Instinct, 63 for the Speed), and very platform-y in stock specs. Add some weight in the handle via lead, silicone, and / or Blue Stick, and you're in business.
