In/Out Device

I just flashed the January firmware, and my touch screen locks up when I try to change the time. Then, I force rebooted it and it won't respond to pressing Record Only. Also, if I try to detect the courts, everything turns black. What a mess!

Oh, that's too bad. Maybe it's worth giving it a try to update the firmware again?

Well, got it to start up again, but the screen shows the same view on top and bottom - seems one of my cameras is not staying connected properly. This is after I had to send it in for repair 2 the day after I received it - not fixed apparently. It is a total piece of junk held together by weak solder.

As said in Gregoire support, this temperature is internal to the processor :

In my test, with the device only on with no record/line call, the temperature grows like in the following diagram :
ve9ilh.jpg

Then for me no crash during 120 minutes with no record/line call.
When recording only (no line call), I've got these results :
  • Initial t° : 35°c
  • Record only lanched
  • Screen freezed after 16 min 27 sec.
  • I've stoped the video after 25 min 48 sec.
  • Video seemed to be recorded
  • T° : 86 °c
  • When I tried to replay the video, I've got a black screen and the device was freezed.
  • Hard reboot
  • T° 79°c
  • Record only lanched again
  • Screen freezed again after 16 min 41 sec.
These tests are done, at home, with the previous firmware 2017-12-05.
I will do these tests agin with the new firmawre.

mrmoonball, your crash are only with the new firmware ? during recording ?

The device always crashed for me on all 3 firmwares I've been on. At last crash it showed 100C internal temp. And that was after rebooting the device which means it had time to cool down from its peak already.

For me, no. All I have to show for my $200+ is a broken unit that only records one side of the court and a bunch of heartache. The developer is terrible at customer service, and he really over-exaggerated the capabilities of the device. Honestly, it feels like a bait-and-switch scheme.

Shame. I would have paid maybe $150 for a device that records video and keeps track of stats though, provided it could do that well enough

I'm sorry for @CarterStC and maybe some others who have had hardware defects. But like I said, I'm more than happy for $200 already. I've never had a chance of measuring speed with the latest firmware yet but it'll add another dimension in the stats.

I have a device and I'm still waiting for it to mature more before I "use" it, sure I've tested it but it's not worth the hassle to me quite yet to incorporate in my routine.

Having easy access to stats (placement, speed, rally length, etc) is what I'd like. I current app/UI is still too rudimentary for my liking.

I hope for you that it will work finally. I think Gregory took a vacation because he just answered my new tickets now although I sent them a week ago. Usually he answered me in just 1/2 days.

I share the point of view of pnw_hardcourt : not yet totally mature. For me, the main issue is the court recognition. Too many times where it doesn't work. When it works, there are also false positives and missed balls. But for the recognized ball bounce it works pretty well and in real time which is for me one of the most important and impressive feature. And with a set of stats yet interesting I: ball location, in/out, speed, height over the net. And Gregoire is very responsive too with one new firmware each month. I believe in him and it's product. From now I'm a bit disappointed and frustrated but I think that it will change in the future.
In the next firmware, planed at 2018-02-02, as detailed in the roadmap in the support website, the court detection has been greatly improved.

Hi all, my 0.02€ worth,
I rallied today a regular practice with the coach. I was very sensory; had the Sony Sensor on the racket, but more importantly I was playing on a zenniz-court (www.zenniz.com) and also had the In/Out sitting on the netpost.
The stats given are shown side by side in the attached picture (and only for reference, thank you very much. I know very well that I'm a feeble hitter, but that's another story on another topic).
pBntMvS.jpg

I stopped using the In/Out at one point, because it kept flashing the red although balls were very clearly in and the red flashes were distracting and annoying. It was a training session so I did not have the time to "teach" the In/Out -device.
Some comments regarding the session:
+ There's a general resemblance in the patterns
+ The average speed is a very good estimate.
- The top-readings are wayyy off. When and if I get to "put the ball away" I reach speed in the range of 115-125km/h. No groundstrokes ever reach 131km/h, let alone 174 km/h.
+ The "In" percentages are somehat in line (80,7% vs. 84%) but there is a discrepancy nevertheless. I assume it's because the In/Out is not just quite there yet.
Overall: It seems to give a ballpark (tennis court) idea how (fast) and where you're hitting. But I still hope more accuracy.

Some overall comments after 36 uploaded sessions with 1680 shots:
- Can't use the device more than 30-40 minutes. Then it overheats (or something) and is not providing any kind of useful aid in the court. This is, in my opinion, the greatest weakness of the gizmo and a clear weakness. I have used the device both videorecording and just line calling. Still just the 30-40 minutes.
- With the latest firmware update I seem to have lost the ability to track individual self-fed shots. This was possible before.
. Have not tried the serve practise.
+ No problems whatsoever with the court detection. Always successful on the first or second try. Been using the device at inside courts with different lighting options (regular white tubes, (horrible) yellow/orange tubes, LED tubes), courts also with varying colors, mostly green, orange or blue plexipave. No additional lines on any of the courts.

All in all, it's definately still in beta. Going to the right direction. Wish everything would be happening a little faster. :)

Interesting. My court detection is not great but I used it for about 4 sets on Saturday with no shutdowns until the battery died. I had it hooked up to an external battery as well. I noticed one shot that it called based on someones white sock and shoe but I did not have much time to play around with it since the battery USB broke. He is sending a new one now.

I agree the hardware needs a CE expert to refine but I have high hopes for the software and it seems to be coming along. I am a bit doubtful that he will be able to execute on serves in a painless way though. It needs to be close to perfect to know the score or it will be a pain to use. I hope he proves me wrong.

Does Zennis give you ball speed and shot types? It can be a good benchmark for this device.

The zenniz-system, or more precisely, the UI gives you, for the moment, average ball speed, racket and bounce points on the court. It is also able differentiate ground strokes, volleys and serves, at least to a degree. Very useful tool, but requires more or less fixed installation (and sets you back roughly 3k$). Here in Finland we have quite a few courts equipped with zenniz, but the bigger worldwide breakthru seems to be still in the works.
Zenniz and In/Out are clearly competing for the same audience. Time will tell...

This device is terrible! My unit arrived with the outer case crushed and the cameras dangling out of the unit. I sent it back it in for repair and when it came back one of the cameras was dangling out. The screen goes black when I try to detect the court. Also the battery is jammed and does not come out. I have yet to get it to work for 1 minute. Clearly not ready for sale and I'm hoping for a refund at this point.

What makes you so sure the product wasn't damaged in transit both times?

Or did you collect it personally, in which case you could have checked it then and there.

I received the latest unit. This one seems to be tighter on the mount so it does not move when the net moves. I really wish they would enable Doubles practice mode so it would be more useful for me.

I have also found their customer service to be a bit slow but he has been thorough with my issues and they have all been resolved.

I really like the shot tracking but it is of limited use right now as it does not know when you switch sides. It would be cool to be able to have some limited control via a smart watch.

Unfortunately, when I contacted him about developing smart watch integration, he was very focused on charging developers to gain access to the API, and additionally, sharing in any revenue of smart device sales.
I'd like to start development on some cool smart watch features, but I doubt he'll have many interested parties with these limitations.

Maybe it was damaged both times, it's hard to say...Clearly the first unit was damaged in shipping since the box was dented and there was virtually no packing material around the case. The second unit looked just fine except for the camera dangling out. Maybe the unit is too fragile to send in the mail. I don't know, it's not really my problem...I paid $200 for a gadget that hasn't worked from day one. Now 2 weeks later I have yet to get a response or a return authorization for the second unit. They left me no choice but to do a chargeback through my cc.

For line calls, I wouldn’t recommend. Not ready for prime time.

For getting a personal summary of where you are hitting the balls, where they landed, and other stats, yes. There’s some value there.

I took the device out today with the latest software. And I completely agree with Tennis_Monk above. The accuracy is not good enough for satisfactory line calling, not even for practise matches. However, if you're rallying, and want to see where and how fast you hit, then this is _the_ portbale device to use. Actually the only device out there. Maybe future software releases will bring additional functions and maybe the pairing function (pairing two of these devices for doubles) could be used to improve the accuracy. Or maybe not.
If it was a perfect world, I'd design a little bit less portable system (maybe six cameras), with a bit better cameras (I think high enough shutter speed could be the key factor here). This would give you the results -factor for your play (from where did you hit the ball, where did it land, and how fast it traveled). Then add the input from a racket attached sensor (like the Sony Sensor, or the upcoming Courtmatics) and you get the input -factor for your play (racket head speed, contact point on the spring bed, and maybe some estimates on the strike type; forehand, backhand, serves, volleys). Keep the price under 1000€/$ and you'd have a pretty good training aid. Too bad it isn't a perfect world.

All those functions for under 1000? That’s too cheap and huge bargain but not many people will be able to afford over 1000 device so unfortunately there is no market for the device...

what do you mean ? and how would it help ?
Memory and perception are very far from perfect, especially when distracted by trying to win a match. This gives you actual data instead of what you think happened, which may or may not be accurate. That is why top pros have coaches. This is the future, I just wish it was a bit more robust and could integrate with other sensors.

All with video as an added feature.

oops sorry..mis-read the info...I should've put my glasses on...lol... ;)
It will be interesting to see Match mode. I think this is where we will truly feel how good or bad the device is. It will require an accurate score, which will require accurate calls AND ignoring the non play related ball bounces and stray calls. If it is not 99%, Match mode will be more painful than helpful.

Suppose this was 99.9% accurate on line calls (better than almost all humans). What makes you think that your USTA opponent would agree to allow it to make the call? Especially if they're cheaters?

From day 1 I have purchased this for the stats tracking device primarily. Is it too expensive just for that? It's relative... I think it's worth way more than the similarly priced Sony sensor.

I think most of the teams would agree just cause they don't want mistaken bad Calls to be retaliated against.......... You know how if you get a Bad call and you will retaliate later with another bad call to make up for that bad call........... It SnowBalls.

The court recognition is much better for me. It works in the first few tries now when it took 10 or more previously.

Something to keep in mind; the players hide the line from the sensor on a lot of shots, especially in doubles. You will need 2 machines for doubles.

I have not checked it for accuracy lately but I have noticed that it still picks up people as lines.

When I used it with a ball machine, it had a nice cluster that looked really accurate. No stray shots.

Okay so I haven't used this thing in a while, but I did the latest update and took it to a practice session the other day. Much better court recognition, and the star-rating feature is great. Also it is easier to stop and start the session as you don't have to repeat the recognition. This made for better stats and video too, as I have more individual "sessions" as opposed to one very long one. I would appreciate a feature of the app to enable me to split the video and stats into different sessions in case I forgot to stop and start the device. Also the video and stats are not well integrated - they're basically separate.

The only "show-stopper" that I ran into was the device crashing after about 20 minutes, which I think others have mentioned. It does get very hot, but I'm not sure if that's the cause. This is in line-call and video mode.

is someone also at " helicopter sounds" on his videos ?? (Which are more like the sound of a camera shutter super 8 ...)
Are all the cameras or some of them only?
the last firmware 02-02-2018 has done nothing more for now, and Gregoire 's support tells me it's a more complicated problem than expected. The video is unusable with this sound.

My sound is fine when I record video. I would argue that you could use the video if you mute the sound, although you miss out on any communication you are having in doubles. Singles video does not really need sound for providing feedback for improvement.

I do think the issue needs to be fixed and I have my own frustrations with my unit.

3/5 and no update yet. I want to see his solution for match mode because it will be a nightmare unless the stray calls are minimized. I have recently had a state of games where everyone forgets the score so that would be nice.

The court recognition has been excellent for me lately. It finds it the first time and it is spot on the lines when I check it.

Next release is out but unfortunately no match mode. Gregoire told me that it will be definitely in the 2018-04-04 firmware.
We have to wait a bit more.

Unfortunately, my device does not recognize that there is an update. It also corrupts all the videos and rarely synchs the data. I have found the software to be incredibly buggy.
