Indoor acrylic courts

A local tennis centre when I often play league matches is changing a couple of its (horrible) carpet courts to indoor acrylic. I was wondering if anyone had played on this surface and what it was like? Is it more like a hard court? I hope so as that is my prefered surface.

It's like a fast hard court. It sounds as though you'll like it.

Do you have the orange carpet currently?

Like others have said, it's like a quick hard court. That said, it might not start off as quick.

If a good amount of sand is used in the paint mixture, it could start off as a reasonably rough, medium-paced surface. But, as time goes on, more and more dust and fluff will settle into all the little gaps and fill them in, which effectively makes the surface smoother and faster.

That's what happened at my club.

I started a similar thread,

I can't really offer a comparison to other surfaces as i've only played on artificial grass, but it's very quick and throws off the timing of people who've not played on it before.

I've also heard it derided as not a real surface from a coach who used to play on the junior tour with murray, nadal et al.

I've just had a read through from your post. How are you finding it these days?

It's supposed to help improve the develompent of Are u around on Sep 2nd - looking to book spa day junior players - that's why they claim anyway.

My club now has three indoor surfaces.

The oldest is green carpet, which is the original surface. This bounces lowest and is fastest.

The second is orange carpet, with a navy run-off area. These were installed this year. The carpet is thicker, the ball bounces higher and slower than the green. Curiously, slices sit up. The orange and blue kinda hurt my eyes.

The last is acrylic, which were completed a couple of months ago. They are two shades of blue, and look lovely. The ball bounces higher again, though slice shoot through low. Initially they felt faster, but once I'd had a couple of goes on them I realised they were actually slower than the green carpet. They absolutely eat balls, and are probably going to kill my shoes much quicker too.

Outdoors we have astroturf, though I have suspicions that it's actually the same carpet they used inside with a load of sand dumped on it. They are built on a landfill, uneven, and are possibly the worst courts I've ever played on.

The finish (paint) on all hard courts (US) is typically acrylic. With sand for texture.
