Hi, I'm new to this board. Big Rafa fan :)

Anyhow, I wanted to get your guys' take on indoor carpet. It no longer existed after 2009, I believe. Before carpet was the main indoor surface. Why did they do away with it? Do you think carpet would help players stay healthier as perhaps it's a softer surface than hard courts?

Big Rafa fan wants Indoor Carpet???

Believe it or not, we Rafa fans want to see him succeed on all surfaces. He did have some success on carpet, reaching the finals of the Paris Masters in 2007. He obviously can't pick up any titles on carpet if the surface no longer exists :p

The women play a tournament in Quebec on carpet after the US Open. Its a minor tourney but I think its the only carpet left.

If carpet were brought back you would have guys like rafter and stakhovsky or whatever his name is taking over.

Remember fed won his 17 slams on slow courts.

A Nadal fan wants a carpet? Is it a joke?

Nadal and a Nadal team are teams which say complaints and an excuse most.

If Nadal loses on a carpet. They are begin selfish and arrogant dissatisfaction as usual.

Roger Federer who was a 19-year-old unripe serve & volley player won Sampras.

And the won the victory in the year, Goran Ivanisevic. The player who was never able to win Sampras by grass.

Roger changed into the all-round style gradually after that.

His idol is Edberg.

You know what I want them to bring back? Those courts that only painted singles boundaries and left off the doubles marks.

I think it's easier to hit winners when you only have 1 line to follow as opposed to a peripheral.

The elimination of carpet is simply a symptom of the much more prevalent and prominent issue of court homogenization/slowdown plaguing tennis which has resulted in the game devolving into a battle of attrition, relying more on endurance to succeed than talent.

They should bring it back

Remember this fast surface at Paris Bercy in year 2010? Amazing, Soderling winning, Llodra in semi final ! :)

We want fast surfaces again.
Raonic would be damn tough to beat on them.

can you seriously shut up or talk normal, like all of us tennis fans? is it too much to ask? :)

Based on his way of writing, I would guess he's Japanese.

Back on topic though, I like carpet as I'm a net player myself, and grew up on it. It makes for interesting matchups. Especially on a really fast one. In my opinion, it promotes shot making and aggressive play which I think has sort of died out.

not sure about ppl here, but I played on carpet and its totally crap game, no bounce at all, hard to guess which ball you need to move in and which not. Uneven rubber granules spread over carpet - clay is better.

I have as well, it totally suit the very offensive players, can't defend on that surface. I personnaly liked it a lot

They'll probably speed up the courts again at some point, but I doubt they'll bring back carpet.

Aah ! Sweet memories ! Llodra had a pretty good run there last year as well. And I loved how he brought his kid to the court after every match :)

The ironic thing is that Federer himself had a big role to play in the ATP phasing out carpet from all tour events. He complained that it was too risky in terms of injury.

is wasn't just Federer  the atp took in a range of opinions on the effects of carpet on the players,

they must have some stats to back up the decision to stop using carpet otherwise why stop it..

I don't miss carpet..if its fast HC being pined for i'd agree with some of them being quicker, but folk wanting injury making surfaces like carpet to be used again isn't the way forward.

What has indoor carpet which happened AFTER the US Open, have anything to do with slams, regardless of who has won what?

No slam was ever on Indoor Carpet. Slams in general are outdoor events.

Indoor carpet is needed for variety and to reward other styles of tennis that don't get the chance to flourish as much on those slow court slams.

I'm not against it. But remember that carpet can be made to play extremely slow as well.

I think the AO being on a hard court is wrong . There should he four distinct surfaces .

I think the AO should be on har tru or carpet .....or .....wait for it .....cork!!!

Yup cork! I played on it in Europe.

It's fast easy on the knees and just an incredibly fun surface . I don't know why it's not more popular .

In te USA older players play on clay because it's easy on the body. But I think they would enjoy a nice clean bounce of a hard court if it were easy on the body.

As for speeding up the surface that will not give you serve and volley by the way. The windshield wiper forehand and luxilon has made serve and volley a thing of the past. Groundstrokes would be even bigger on a fast surface.

Bring back gut or wood racquets and serve and volley will be back .....surface speed won't change a thing . It would just be like watching groundstroke winner after groundstroke winner.

I am all for more variety in the slams, and it would be nice for AO to have their own distinct surface. They seem like the slam without the surface identity, and seem as a knock off of the USO as a result. Even if it is more of the fun slam in many people's eyes.

Its not a surface we have in Australia but i played on holidays in Europe and loved it. When you hit through the ball it stayed low but if you hit with more top it bounced higher. Seems much better on body then hard courts too. Would love the end of season when players are winding down to be played on faster indoor carpet courts. Quicker matches with less stress on the body of players is ideal. May see some serve volly and encouragement for one handed backhands too.
