Is it better to string a one piece than two?

When possible, is it better to do a one piece string job than two? One of my friends strings professionally and he recommends a one piece. He said it's quicker (only two tie off knots, less measuring and cutting, etc) and it also requires less string.

I string everything two piece. Two piece is an apporoved method on every racket, I've laid my hands on, in the last three years.

I can't imagine the speed difference amounts to a hill of beans, either way. I don't like pulling the extra 20 feet of string through the long side, or counting crosses for an ATW.

For sets, I fold the string in half, add 1 foot to the main half, and cut.

For reels I use 21 feet for the mains and 18 for the crosses.

It works for me . . . I prestretch everthing, too !

Hmm, not sure why a 1-piece would lose tension faster than a 2-piece. I usually string 2-piece because I generally string poly/syn hybrids, but I use a 1-piece if I'm doing a full job. No real difference to me, but some racquets will make you string the crosses bottom-to-top if you try to do it as a 1-piece.

Each way has it's benefits and drawbacks:

One Piece: Less string, only two knots, some say it looks more "professional" BUT: A ton of string to pull, sometimes you have to think through ATW

I don't think performance has anything to do with it. Both do the job. I like two piece because, to me, it's easier, it's the way I learned, I tie a good looking knot ;) , I don't really have to think about it, an especially when stringing gut, it's much easier on the crosses because you don't handle them as much.

how does it look more professional when every professional on tour uses a two piece...

This isn't true. Somebody's been reading too many **** fairy tales.

Of the top 10 men Nadal, Djokovic, Blake, Gonzalez, Robredo, Berdych, and Haas all use one piece.

Tend to agree with you there except Gonzo. He has been known to use a hybrid (Alu rough & gut). Not sure now though.

Mathieu has requested at Wimbledon) that his rqt are strung 2 piece

Notice I said, "Some say it looks more professional"... I didn't say, "I say", if you read the rest of my post you will see that I'm a fan of two-piece.

BTW, I ALWAYS love posts that use such definitive words such as ALL, EVERY, ALWAYS, etc…

I agree. I don't see how 1-piece would lose tension faster than a 2-piece. In any case, I usually string my racquets full-poly and I mostly use a 1-piece job. :)

You lose tension on the tie-offs. Sure, you can up the tension 5-10#s to compensate for the tension loss, but that's not great on the racket either. An ATW pattern (the box-type ATW pattern) pulls tension on all 4 corners and better equalizes the stress before the mains are really started. Plus, the knot is the weakest part of a stringjob in most cases, and a 1-piece gives you half as many. I string about 50% hybrids, so of course they are strung using 2 pieces. But, if it's a single string type, I use an ATW pattern if necessary and do a 1-piece (except Yonex and some Heads). And, I normally make the tie-offs the top and bottom cross.
