Is it okay to mix gauge sizes in a hybrid? (like a 16G main with 17G crosses)

I wanted to test out the Solinco Tour Bite 17/Vanquish 17G string hybrid setup I've seen some people rave about.

I'm used to using a poly/synthetic setup but I guess poly/multi setups are becoming more popular. I usually break my crosses first with the poly/synthetic setup so I've started using 17G mains and 16G crosses. Is this okay? Will the crosses still break first when they're multi instead of synthetic? Should I use 17/17 or 17/16 or 16/16?

Thanks.

all personal preference-

im not a string breaker - and i hit hard.. i use 17g main and cross- ive used 16 crosses but i like the feel from the 17g - if i use NGut i use that as a 16 main and then a poly cross usually 17.

i have a friend who hits about the same as me but hes constantly breaking a string - about the 2 weeks in -- so for him 17 doesnt last and he uses 16.

i have a 3 different hybrid setups in my rackets now and my favorite is still cyclone main and cross as sig-- i rotate thru rackets and generally cut out the strings when they get too stiff

I break strings very frequently, and like I said it's always the crosses first. That's why I figured I should use a 17 main/16 cross. That way it'll last a little longer while getting the benefit from the 17 gauge mains.

personally id try cyclone full bed with cross 3lb less than mains and see how that works then fine tune from there- IF its too rough on your arm then try a different cross but if not stay with full poly

You are breaking the crosses first because TB is a shaped very sharp edged string. Shaped polys saw through softer strings like syn gut and multis quickly.

If you put a full bed of any string in a frame 9 times out of 10, the mains will break first. When I used poly / multi hybrids, I always broke the crosses which happen to be the softer string. Basically the softer string will break first. If you used 16g multi mains and 17g poly crosses, the 16 mains would break first.

For 4.0 and 4.5 string breakers who don't like full poly, I use SilverString 17g (1.25 mm) mains & Prince Premier Control 15g crosses. These guys mostly play singles and generate their own spin through technique and shaped strings wouldn't work well for them due to the sawing of the crosses.

FWIW, I am not a fan of Vanquish in any gauge and think their are much better multis for less money. NRG2 and X1 Bi-phase were my favorites for years but they got way to pricey. For the money, PP Control works great and comes in 15, 15L, 16, 17 gauges

If you break strings frequently, stop using a shaped main like TB and soft cross, or switch to a 15g cross. If you still break strings too frequently switch to a full bed of 16g poly and then see what happens.
