Is it possible to be a fan of no player?

Are there posters that simply just hate Fed with no other purpose?

Lately several posters have arrived on the scene that claim no one. Maybe just a flash in the pan after the Federer loss. Seems impossible to me to not have a favorite player. Most of them are just happy that Federer lost. Do they watch tennis only to see him lose? Are they just laying back because their favorite player is injured or having bad results?

I don't see the point of masking yourself on a forum to that extent. Even faking a fandom is more understandable than being neutral. TTW has it's cliques and so on like anything else and that's fine. It actually makes sense. Being a fan of no one is just BS and I feel like such posters should be ignored.

Also, let me say that fans of past players aren't who I'm talking about. I know that there are some that are tennis fans that maybe are lost at the moment for whatever reason. Possibly soul searching or have a few players they follow. Have to be a fan of someone right? The ones I'm speaking of have no agenda but hating Federer. How is that being a real fan?

But sure you can be a neutral if you follow sports as it's intended i.e. support your dad's team/your countrymen and it's only too bad if you don't have any top players from your country.

It's almost impossible, if you hate as you say Federer, to protect yourself, you end defending Nadal and/or Djokovic. Or in the case of the late 90's Clay, Sampras. To fit in the hateclub, you need to have a home fanbase.

Over time I guess you automatically do start to root for a specific player more than others. It's the same with any sport that you're passionate about I think. For instance, when I watch the olympics and an event like skiing, where I don't really follow it, I just want to see a good show, rather than want a specific athlete to win, but when I watch MotoGP, I root for rossi

I am a fan of many players but don't have a clear #1. The closest one to that used to be Lendl way back.

Me too. I didn't stop watching if Fed was hurt or out of a tournament. I tend to find someone else to pull for or simply watch for love of the game. You still have one you favor a lil more though right? It's like having a fav kid that you maybe won't admit out loud necessarily.

I like fed because we play similar. But dont care if he wins and loses (aside to troll the nadal fans :) )

I mainly dislike players vs liking them. People who take 35 secs between every point and towel off after being aced, arent watchable for me

Nadal gives us so much ammo that its too easy :D. Federer has his ways too. We see them in a more personal light than any other sport. Get to know their quirks and ways, so it makes for good talk. I do care when he loses though. Can't help it.

I like a comeback story or the underdog story. Some guys I've never liked for their entire career, I find myself liking toward the end of it.

I need to be a fan of a particular player or a small group of players in an individual sport, or a fan of a team. It makes it far more interesting to have a vested interest. For team sports, I pull for local teams in a big way(baseball and hockey). For individual sports, I still lean towards fellow American players. However, I can still easily root for players from other countries too. For example, Federer is my favorite player now due to his style. But I also like Shapovalov. I even don't mind players like Goffin and Thiem either. But to be honest, I'd watch a lot less if Federer retired. I'd probably have to start pulling for new blood start his legacy.

No it's impossible as a true tennis fan to not be a fan of "no" player if you love tennis.

Everybody loves an underdog, and everybody loves a champion.
Which is why the big 4 and FEDAL specifically have such devoted, crazy, and extreme fans and haters.

But

War is over.

Someone on MTF posted some years ago showing that bye did have one win. I forgot the history or who it was. Apparently the guy who had the bye withdrew too late for him to be replaced. So they gave bye the win and gave the guy in the next round a bye instead of a walkover against that player.

Can't remember the details, but he posted a screenshot of bye's record from the ATP site and sure enough, bye officially had 1 win.

This was before the ATP redid the site several years ago. Apparently that was changed.

It’s one thing supporting a player or being a fan. Unfortunately some fans take it way too far and defend their favourite player like as if they are related to them and make it personal. Don’t those fans realise that player cares nothing about them ??

If someone is here for the tennis it is impossible to not be a fan of someone.

However, there are people that are not interested in the game, but maybe are drawn to a tennis forum because of the celebrity status of a player. They wouldn't have a favourite tennis player because of his tennis, so, in a way they are telling the (rather unflattering for them) truth. The category of the so called "drones"/"bots" basically consists of such people: they do not post anything tennis related except for things that indirectly concern their favourite or his rivals, do not post opinions on the technical side of the sport, and do not play (or if they claim they do it is easily visible that they lie in a very short timespan).

It is the same with people that claim that they are fans of a player that they detest, only to fall into their own trap: they are not fooling anyone, no matter how much they insist and sooner rather than later fall flat on their faces.

Most of those people have nothing else to do, so they do that to get some sort of cheap adrenaline kick when they are not covering up more serios issues.

The best way to approach those people is to block them as soon as they demonstrate that they fall in those categories. Some people prefer to leave them and have a talk with them, bit that rarely works. BTW, one cannot ignore them completely, because sometimes one comes across a discussion that is missing parts, if the blocked users are still blocked, and to view the comments of the good posters one has to unblock them.

It is up to you to decide the level of influence those posters have on your forum experience.

I've never blocked anyone here. I've wondered if it's common or not. Never really felt the need to do it until I encountered these types I mentioned. If someone has hated Federer from the beginning and likes another player, that's fine with me. Its all a part of it. It would be boring if everyone was a Fed fan or Nadal fan etc. I still enjoy their posts majority of the time and carry on if I don't. Anyone that sticks around for very long is usually a real tennis fan. Like I said before, its only a couple out of the woodwork that I'm speaking of. Haven't really seem them before or since. It hasn't kept me up at night or anything lol. But, it was kind of irritating at the time.

I am not blocking anyone, because he is a fan of a certain player, that would be ridiculous.

Mostly it is because certain types of posters are here to waste everyone's time, have really tired arguments that have been already discussed etc., and mostly do not even have the decency to own their positions, especially when confronted with failure on their part. To me that and the obvious attempt at trolling are the points when I block them, as they literally have nothing to contribute with (not even a decent opposing opinion).

Of course, everyone must decide for himself what he is prepared to allow in that regard.

I actually like watching remaining rounds after your fav player loses..I had the most fun watching US open 16...no Fed and hence less stress..had better sleep at night after the night sessions..also Stanimal kicking Djokers butt was fun to watch as well.. :D:D

Impossible. That's like me liking WWE without liking any of the wrestlers. Anyone that says they can watch tennis and not have any players to root for is pulling a Tonya Harding. #ISwearIKnewNothing!

I'm assuming by "no player" the OP is meaning "no specific player". I generally like to watch good tennis and I'm inclined to root for underdogs. But I can't say I'm attached to any player in this current era. I like Fed. I like Nadal. I like Djokovic. Well maybe I'm not that interested in Murray, but I certainly don't root against him.

In Davis cup I'll cheer for Team Canada. But that's cheering a uniform not a player per se.

It's not like there aren't posters who just flood both forum sections when Nadal or Djokovic lose. If anything those two guys have attracted even more haters over the years.

As for the question, I find that hard to imagine. I think it is possible to not have a clear standout favorite but to not be a fan of any player at all, that I can't see.
