Is it wise to take off tennis ?

Me and my friends decided to take off tennis for a month to do some speed and weight trainning. But the temptation to play overwhelmed us today, we ended up hitting some afterschool. BOY DID WE SUCKED !! Our footwork was off, our swing was a disaster, our volley and serve, i dont want to even mention it. We were really frustrated with all these results we got. On the bright side, our speed for getting to the ball was much more faster than before, we just lost our positions and motions. A week without tennis and that happened, cant imagine a month. Can anyone offer any tips on how to improve your speed and reaction speed without actually playing tennis. And also your best footwork drills.

I strained some ligaments in my ankle playing basketball one year and ended up having a 4 month break. When I came back I hit the ball as well, or better than I did before.
I think the reason for this is based on my passion for playing. Even while I was on my forced break I was taking practice swings and thinking about playing. I couldn't wait to get back.
Another thing that may have affected your play is your weight training. That may have changed your body, adding muscle here or there, enough to make you have to adjust to the new structure. It's not a bad thing to do weights, but it isn't the best thing for tennis. It won't improve your game much, but it will help you avoid injury down the road.

footwork, sprints, plyometry, agility drills, flexibility, are very important in tennis. just lifting will make you heavy.

middle distance running is important in terms of recovering as quickly as possible your capability to sprint again after a long tough exchange.

check the Health forum.

also, check the links in my signature here, lots of exercises:

Unless you live in a year-long warm environment, you should do your weight-lifting in the off-season. You can still do some lifting, but it should be just enough to maintain your strength.

It's to be expected if you take any amount of time off. That's why the better you get, the more often you need to play to improve. Right now, you can get better playing once or twice a week. But then as you improve, you may need to play 5-6 times a week.
