Is this a good way to beat Federer?

So Schiavone in the French Open final has enlightened me. She came to net whenever she saw Stosur was hitting a slice (forced on the run). She won almost all of those points. Now Federer slices most of his backhand serve returns. So maybe a serve (to the backhand)-and-volley would work against him, despite the fact that his slice is one of the best in the game? Would it still be an easy putaway? Is this as good a strategy as heavy topspin to the backhand (ala Nadal)?

Federer is not Stosur..... duh!! Fed does not slice against net rushers. He tends to be a bit more aggressive.. watch the karlovic match from 2009 wimby.

I actually asked this question before on this particular board.

I get the info that it wouldnt work as Federer's slice is a low skidding one, meaning that you will have to hit a shoe lace volley when you're approaching the net. this leaves Federer with more time to set up a passing shot.

But still, you're bound to get a couple of easy points if you throw it in as a surprise tactic. Although he is pretty good at adjusting his returns even after the serve has been hit if he notices the server sneaking in to net

Yah I would agree that you might get a couple of easy point here or there....but you do it to much and Rog adapts goes on the aggressive and then your hooped.

You guys are over rating Federer's return game. http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=mdvcnu8V-5U watch this match between him and Karlovic, although federer does hit a few great returns pass karlovic, karlovic is still getting a lot of easy volleys to put away throughout the match. Both players played great, the best I've seen karlovic play. Maybe even better than his run in Wimbledon last year. If he just had better ground strokes, doesn't even have to be superb like Djokovic, Ljubicic ground strokes would make Karlovic a feared man in grand slams.

How can you use Karlovic as an example?
Even Messi, Maradona, Madona and Mother Mary on steriods combine would get aced by Karlovic regularly.

Federer has awesome returns. Look at the 2007 US Open vs A Rod for example. THAT SHOT would have been an ace against any player save Murray, but Fed returned it with interest.

This thread is 4 years out of date. News flash: people aren't looking to beat federer like they were back in 2006 where he looked almost unbeatable. When he starts losing matches to Blake, Roddick, Davydenko, Isner, Karlovic, Hewitt as well as others and non top 10's, you start realizing there's better things to talk about. Like how anyone can beat nadal on clay.

Aptly named cork screw
Insofar as grass and then hardcourt seasons are upon is, how timely is it to discuss whether Nadal is vulnerable on clay? What are you doing for Memorial Day?

Simple, you hit through him which is what Soderling did last year... of course easier said then done.

Qubax, this is true. Messarger, I agree. And it's not like Federer is easily beaten nowadays; we all know one can beat him with Sod's or Nadal's strategies, but I was just looking at another. If this thread was already talked about, I apologize. And Sod has a horrible head-to-head against him so maybe he's not a great example; just huge hitters in general would make more sense (that way it includes Del Potro, etc).
