Las Vegas Tennis

I just got hired by Ocean Spray out in Las Vegas for a summer internship, and so I will be heading out there in a few months. I was hoping some of you could give me some advice on good places to hit. I was excited to go to the International Tennis Centre, but I can't seem to find their website so I was wondering if they sadly closed down?

I always wanted to go - but there marketing focus seemed to be 'you could hit on a court near a pro practicing'. The website had no useful info - memberships, daily rates for a court/coach to hit with - so I never bothered.

ClubSports - in Henderson and a lot closer to Ocean Spray - is highly regarded - indoor and outdoor courts and ball machines. Not sure if you can cut that on an internship. So you may go to one of the big public parks - Sunset and Eastern (8 courts I think) - and hang out and try to meet someone.

You should also network at Ocean Spray - probably some players who work there. There are courts at many of the public schools - so if you find someone, courts won't be an issue - just the heat and the wind. Good luck.

ITC got converted into an indoor soccer facility. They erected the soccer fields over the tennis courts. One court was left intact so the owner's son can continue to practice there, he's an aspiring pro.

Club Sport is ok, but the courts havent been resurfaced in years.

Sunset Park, the courts are Rebound Ace, but they're also in deteriorating condition.

Depending on what part of town you're in you might want to check out Darling Tennis Center which is in Summerlin. There are also some parks with some pretty good courts in Green Valley, Summerlin, and centrally located.

Since I'm leaving Monday to drive out to Las Vegas, I thought I would bump this thread and see if anyone else wanted to chime in on good places to hit in that area. I would like to hit on some clay courts if possible. Are there any of those close by?

I second heading to Darling. You will be hard pressed to find a better public facility anywhere. How to handle the summer heat is another question entirely. Keep telling yourself "it's a dry heat".

I'll take Vegas summer over Singapore. I was just there - an hour hit was brutal. Looked like I'd been pushed in a swimming pool at the end.

The wind in Vegas is a bigger issue IMHO - unless Darling put in a dome I wasn't aware of. I've been up there and had days I wanted to play but when I saw how windy it was I just went for a run.

Those courts are at the Stirling Club at the Turnberry Condos. I think it might be closed now due to the real estate crisis. No HOA dues equals no funds to maintain the courts.

To the OP: What level are you.

There's also a brand new 9 court facility that just opened recently in Henderson, Whitney Mesa Rec Center. Has a sunken center court and about 4 QS mini courts as well.

Rob_C I play at 4.0-4.5. I'll definitely check out those new courts you mentioned at Whitney Mesa Rec Center. When I was looking up courts in the area, I hadn't come across those.

Indoor courts...Private club but I think they will work with you on monthly memberships or guest specials.

Vegas doesn't have trouble keeping nice courts open; check out Darling and you'll be hard pressed to find a better public facility not dedicated to the pro tour. Clay courts are impractical in Vegas, too hot and dry to worry about maintenance of them. Unless you're a private club, you can't keep up with the maintenance costs. The issue is courts were overbuilt and the real estate crisis shrunk up the public works budget to maintain them. Private courts are probably more popular as well.

If you want to play outside and don't mind paying a nominal fee for better courts, Darling is the way to go. If you want indoor, Club Sport is your only option. If you want no cost, Lone Mountain just built some nice courts.

Otherwise, I can give you some other options depending on your location. Post an email and I'll send you a reply. I'm generally in your NTRP range (mid-level 4.0 singles, play some 4.5 low line doubles), so if you need a hitting partner, I may be able to help.

Too bad, I was just in Vegas last weekend for my son's basketball tournament (on Lake Las Vegas...you should go there, it's nice). Would have loved to have snuck in a hit.
