Is anyone here planning to watch? Nothing else going on as far as I know. I'll watch because nothing else is going on.

Having enjoyed some pretty peaky Davis Cup atmospheres, I have an allergy to fake team tennis tension. It might set my allergy off, so if anyone could alert us here to any good matches worth reviewing, that'd be greaaat.

I will. Probably because I want to know how well is Fed feeling.

in a recent interview, he said that it took a bit longer to heal, about 10 days when he orignally thought it was 1-2. guess it was a good thing he lost when he did. fortunately with lc, he doesn't have to play as many matches and with rafa there, he probably is spared a doubles match. last year he was probably the best doubles player or the one with the most experience so he played two, where has 2017, i think he only played with rafa and rafa played twice. on paper team europe is definitely the the favorite but a lot of broken bodies heading to laver cup between roger and his back, rafa obviously probably still recovering from USO, thiem and w/e issues he has, i have no idea why he played so soon after USO, and i think fognini has something, zverev and his brain, team world might have a good chance to capitalize.

i am cautiously excited. last year was a lot of fun and honestly one of my favorite events of the year. i have some reservations about this year in terms of teams, mostly on the "world" side...someone tell jmac what the world looks like. i honestly feel like between fognini and sascha/tsitsipas on the same team, europe has the potential to be just as crazy, perhaps even more so than world. seeing sascha have to cheer for tsitsipas and engage with him will be interesting and if if LC does it right, the more intriguing matchup will be nadal vs nick, not fed vs nick.

Will this be fun this year ?? I am looking forward to it but hope it doesn't suck. Question of the day ........... If Novak or RAFA was on team World, would they play this event ??? it seems like they avoid each other like a plague due to psychological edge they would have if they win or lose to each other.

Question is if Novak is on Team world,,, would he even play this event ? or if RAFA was on team world , would he even play ?

I am saying,, If Novak or RAFA was on other team against Roger, would they play this event or would they avoid it ? cause they don't want to play against one another ? if Rafa was on team world, and have to play against Roger and Novak on the same weekend ? or If Novak was on team Europe,, and he has to play against Rafa and roger

Tennis is an individual sport. This team format just really doesn't work in tennis. Nobody ever cared about Davis Cup. Nobody cares about Laver Cup.

I quite enjoy the team format in the Laver and Davis Cup. The emotions from the players are COOL to see. I like them pumping up their team mates and cheering for them. Every player there doesn't want to let his team mates down.
While my kids were playing Junior tennis the players from the same Club would never cheer or support each other, meanwhile the Squash Juniors would cheer each other on...Tennis seemed to UP TIGHT...Just my thought,,,Nadal and Fed on the same team..UTOPIA for me

Laver Cup seems to be marketed through Federer and Nadal showing up and playing as a team. What happens when they're not there? When they're gone. How does this whole Laver Cup event survive then?

I actually like it quite a bit, team tennis is a refreshing change.

i think people should just enjoy it for what it is tbh, its not like its changing the face of tennis, its a 3 day event that is fun, but allows players to still be competitive enough. my gripe is idk how long the whole europe vs world will last and someone tell jmac what the world actually looks like.

one of hte things i like about this event is seeing people from different countries cheer for each other, unlike say davis cup or now atp cup. I mean who would have thought of seeing sascha and stefanos on the same team or nadal and fognini. i enjoy the celebrations, the couch talk, the black courts etc. Idk how I feel about it being an atp event though, but we'll see what the atp has in store for it.

also i see comments like tennis is an individual sport, which is true and part of why i like tennis, but having a team event every now and then isn't going to take away from what tennis is and last year there wasn't nadal, but it still thrived and was enjoyable. i also think it allowed people to discover new players and see a different side of them.

Will watch. I enjoyed the first two editions. I was able to watch it live last year. Me and three other fans cheering for Novak against Anderson, fun times, haha. Would’ve like to see all of the Big 3 together this year.

Don’t agree with it becoming an ATP event, but I think once Federer isn’t playing anymore, they will need a way to keep the event alive. I expect more changes will be made in the coming years. Europe vs the world is stupid, for obvious reasons. Also, someone needs to buy McEnroe a map of the world, teach him some basic geography.

that's awesome that you got to go to LC live, chicago seemed like an amazing crowd. definitely agree with your other points though, i just saw diego liking a tweet that said he and delpo should have been part of team world and swapped for some players and it makes me wonder if he was even approached because i dont think he is playing anything at the moment and he was one of the highlights last year. i know kei was approached but declined but surely they can persuade some other people not from america, canada, an australia. go figure all english speaking countries as well.

i think main sell for when rivals become teammates so having a team europe allowed for fedal and djokerer to be teammates but i dont know how long that will or should contiinue. not sure how else it should be done though? like i dont think it should just be random but i also dont know how long europe vs world will last.

Yea, I had a great time in Chicago. The crowd was great and really got behind Team World.

They had a Fan Zone area where there were two practice courts. It was inside a glass building (if you saw the video of Fed showing the courts in Geneva, the practice courts are set up the same in Chicago). I practically had my nose pressed against the glass watching Dimi, Goffin, Schwartzman, and Jarry practice. Never been quite so close before, haha. Unfortunately, I didn't go the day Federer and Djokovic practiced for their doubles match, that would've been fun.

McEnroe could've at least taken out one American and place someone else in, like Schwartzman. Why Fritz? Oh geez, I just checked the list of players and the alternate is Jordan Thompson, another Aussie. So that's 3 Americans, 2 Canadians, and 2 Australians. Such a diverse world we live in. Unless McEnroe tells us who he approached, we will probably never know who he even considered to begin with. The other person he approached who declined was Felix (another Canadian, lol).

Agree, the main selling point was to see rivals become teammates. In 2017, I didn't really think the tournament would last beyond Federer's career. I didn't expect it to become part of the ATP calendar. Europe vs the world is not sustainable, especially if Europe wins again this year (you know Fed is not gonna want to lose here of all places). I thought about having a Red and Blue team and player selection being random, but how will that work if it's invitational? Who will be asked to play and by whom? Maybe it shouldn't be invitational at all? Too many questions, haha, best to just enjoy it for what it is.

Didn't intend for this to be such a long post, apologies.:censored:

i think he may have approached kei. i just saw on twitter that kei said he would love to participate at LC but i think the timing for him is bad because its right after USO and right before tokyo open and this is usually around hte time he has physical issues or something to that effect. i know last year del po was signed on and he even did press with novak a month or two before but had to drop out as well if they could ever get delpo and kei on team world that would be amazing.

i actually think world has a good chance. honestly i think last year europe were kind of lucky to get the win because diego had match points and then isner had match points in both of his matches. roger says he is fit and that his back is fine, but who knows. sascha is more likely to double fault to a loss than win, thiem also is iffy. i will say thanks to rafa and fognini, they have some better doubles players than they did last year.

hopefully like roger said they start bringing LC around hte world to places that dont usually see tennis and maybe more people will get on board. i say this now, but i'm selfish and boston was teased as a place for next year and if they bring it to boston next year i am going

Just saw the draw and they might as well give it to Team Europe now. Shapovalov v. Thiem, Sock v. Fognini, and Fritz v. Tsitsipas. Given how poorly Stefanos has been playing, Fritz might win, but the other two are over before they've begun. I had hoped Shapovalov would be against Tsitsipas as that would have been a better match.

Jack Sock? JMac is not even trying.

I lake LC is a nice blend between exhibition and competition, both teams want to win and is not important enough to keep them tense, they want the victory but they are relaxed enough to make crazy shots. A competitive exhibition if you like.

I wouldn't give up on our young hero yet, Shapo's been in good form and he took a set off Thiem in Montreal. Moreover in Thiem's last match he lost against Ruusuvuori, ranked 165th. I predict Shapo in a close one. And the Shapo/Sock combination could also win. If Shapo wins both matches he will be the Day 1 hero because the other matches are lost causes.

The guys that would make it more interesting are the ones who gets injured all the time, haha. Last year was a nail biter for sure. Had Fed lost that match against Isner, I'm not sure Zverev would've beaten Anderson, too much pressure for him I think. Since Fed won, Zverev didn't need to win because Djokovic could still save the team. Too bad we didn't get a Djokovic/Kyrgios match, though. Yea, Team World has a decent shot this year with Team Europe in a questionable state. 2-1 is better for the tournament than 3-0 too.

I don't think they will stop in the US again for a while. Maybe South America? Only big tournament there was the 2016 Olympics in Rio. If they are in Boston, I might join you.

ideally they shouldn't be in america again, already we have issues of the players themselves not being an accurate representation of the entire world but damn it i'm selfish. omg zverev was such a mess last year, you could see fed progressively get more annoyed when he kept telling sascha to stop moving back. Sascha so badly wanted to win for his team, it was like the nick of team europe.

to be honest part of me wants a 3-0 because the idea of team world celebrating like the fratboys they are is going to drive me insane. i would have rather they won last year because i like diego and tiafoe and I'll admit i do like nick when he isn't being a pain, but this year i'm like god damn this line up is horrendous and i dont want roger to lose in his home country but at the same time iwant this event to do well and keep the momentum and feel like europe going 3-0 wouldnt help.

Same, same. They were the absolute worst in 2017, they were a bit better last year. If the team was more diverse, we wouldn't have that problem either. Can you imagine Delpo or Nishikori behaving like that?

I think Fed/Zverev will win this time. Something about playing on a team seems to bring the best out of Zverev. Sock looks out of shape currently, and I'm not sure about Shap's doubles skills.

i mean fed/zverev were not bad last year, they had mp, ofcourse zverev just watched the ball fly past him on match point but overall they were in sync with each other. fortunately if it doesn't work out, they are sacrificing 1 point.

I do find team world's celebrations amusing and it was great to see diego kind of take part of it, but i definitely agree that 2017 it was pretty much american college frat boys featuring nick and tiafoe(I know he is american but he isnt as obnoxious as sock/querrey/isner). 2018 was a bit more rounded out with diego and kevin coming on board. I actually found team europe to be pretty entertaining last year, i know people see them as the serious team but last year they came up with their own celebrations. I think chardy and grigor being part of the team really helped. Chardy didn't even play and I swear was the most enthusiastic. RBA has some tough shoes to fill when it comes to being the hype man.

Why on earth is Sock playing singles. :-D

they all have to play singles atleast once so its better for him to get it over with on friday and sacrifice the 1 point. I had to laugh during the press conference when he was asked about his doubles specialty and he was like maybe i will shock the world and win a singles match as well

nick's hype game/trash talk is hilarious. tbh imo its really tsitsipas that is kind of awkward within the group and mostly just with sascha, the rest of them seem to get along well.

Chardy was just excited to be there, haha. Goffin showed a side of him that I didn't expect as well. Maybe RBA will surprise us.
