League Coordinator Problem

Our USTA team is battling another team, whose captain is also the USTA league coordinator, for a spot in the league playoffs. I found out that this captain has called the captains of at least four of our other opponents and told them to put their best players in the lineup to help her win. I think this is not only unethical, but also a conflict of interest. Your thoughts and suggestions on how to handle this would be appreciated.

So let me see if I understand this:

You are battling the league coordinator's team for the bottom spot in the playoffs ? One of you will make it and one of you wont?

So he has talked to other captains (who are presumably already in the playoffs or have no chance to make the playoffs) and asked them not give you an easy win.

Were you hoping they would throw an easy lineup against you ?

Seems to me if you cant beat their best lineups you don't belong in the playoffs anyway.

No...we are tied for first place and one of us will go to the playoffs. She's not asking them to not give us an easy win (no one expects that), she's asking them to stack their team for her benefit. We've beaten them all anyway, but I still think she shouldn't use her position to tell the other captains to help her out.

hmmm ... that is kinda rude of the league coordinator. I'm not sure there's much you can do though. Unless the league coordinator is pressuring them somehow ... but coordinators have no real power so I doubt that's the case. Or if she was asking them to put in good lineups against you but weak lineups against her then maybe .... but to me it seems like one of those things that leaves a bad taste in your mouth but isn't really violating any rules.

Isn't there usually a district coordinator ... maybe you could contact them and see what they think.

Sounds like POLITICS rearing it's ugly head EVEN in LEAGUE TENNIS! Run for the office of league coordinator yourself or become a heavy contributor to this one's re-election. A case of the cheap costco penns could also be a suitable bribe/contribution. Count your votes. All politics are local. There's always SCOTUS.

Obnoxious.

If I received such a call, I would probably give my weakest players an opportunity to play. Out of spite.

Heh....thanks for all the advice. I know league coordinators are low on the totem pole, but she does have control of scheduling and deadlines...e.g. her last two matches happened to be against the weakest teams, and she sets a deadline and then extends it if she doesn't have enough players. Her latest cunning stunt is that she's captaining two teams in the same flight, so we're all anxious to watch her exchange lineups with herself. The worst part of it though, is that at the same time she's gloating on Facebook and posing with her team as if they were trying out for the Rockettes (more like the Rockettes farm team) she doesn't bother to reply to e-mails and phone calls...i.e do her job. Everyone complains about it, but it's a Chinatown situation as in "Forget it, Jake." I think we all know nowadays the "squeaky wheel" no longer gets the oil, and is more likely consigned to the junkyard, but I appreciate the commiseration.

Those are great ideas, Tom....I know I could do her job better with two hands tied behind my back. (Seriously.) I'd have to up the bribe to a case of the cheap Costco wine, though, so will have to ponder the expense/benefit aspects of that particular move.

And don't get me started on SCOTUS, just another fine Chinatown institution.

What?

First, in our league you cannot be league coordinator of the league in which you captain. Women's leagues are captained by men, and vice versa.

Second, rules don't allow you to captain two teams in the same league at the same level, nor are you allowed to captain for one team while playing for a competing team. I thought these might be District or Section rules.

What kind of jungle do you people have out there, Moonbat?

Asphalt, Cindy. ;) Your region is much more buttoned up....we're not even close to that. I'd love to have a male captain...would think the drama would be reduced, but who knows. Our coordinator does whatever she wants, and is too busy gallivanting on Facebook to respond to our requests. I guess the West is still wild after all.

Thanks for the info....always appreciate hearing from you!

I've played several districts and the league director has always been players not captain teams. Conflict for sure. We once had a league director who told persons at a meeting that there is a 48 hr rule for inputting match results. Then she took 3 days, another time a week. Even though she kept sending emails reminding the CPTNS of the 48 hr rule and unfortunately she was a cptn and league director.

File a grievance. What she's doing is unethical and she shouldn't be a coordinator.

Thanks.....I agree wholeheartedly. But she's already penalized our new team by forcing us to play as visitors twice against one team (she claimed court issues with our club, but managed to find a home court for our sister team, and, gasp, for a MXD team of which she just happens to be a member).

I've got to weigh risk vs. reward....if the USTA behaves like "Chinatown" I'm just going to screw my team over, though I know she's way out of line and should be kicked the curb.

Heh....true....but try telling that to all the whistle-blowers who ended up under the wheels of a mass transit vehicle.
