Well it's the matchup quite a few of us have been hoping for.
The Swiss miss Martina Hingis and GOAT (also Swiss) Roger Federer.
But Roger probably has his heart set on a singles gold so might give mixed doubles a miss. Hingis wants to partner with Fed but also happy with fellow Swiss Stan Wawrinka.
Martina Hingis, World No. 2 in doubles and winner of 5 Grand Slam doubles titles in 2015, says she hopes to play the Olympics mixed doubles at the Rio Games with Stan Wawrinka in case Roger Federer decides not to enter the mixed doubles draw.

Speaking to the French Tennis Magazine, the 35-year-old, who is currently in India for the Champions Tennis League, says, "As I always said, I would definitely like to play with Roger. We won the Hopman Cup together in 2001. But the decision is not in my hands. He has to look into his own own schedule and I can tell you that it is quite busy. If that does not happen, I hope to play with Stan. Playing with one or the other will be a very good option anyway for me".

Federer and Wawrinka combined to win the doubles gold medal in Beijing in 2008 and if the two enter the men's doubles event at the Rio Games, it means either of them would have to play three events during the Games if they decided to play the mixed doubles event with Hingis. Hingis won three mixed doubles slams in 2015 with India's Leander Paes while she won two women's doubles slams with another Indian - Sania Mirza.

That would be brilliant.
I'm not sure the last time two players with great singles careers played together?
Hewitt and Clijsters?

2012 mixed had a few but nothing of this proportion. The only partnership that had both players as singles slam champions was Hewitt/Stosur.

That will be a sweet matchup:) It will have to be Fed, if she wants the gold. Paes/Mirza, or Bhupati/Mirza, or Bopana/Mirza will be extremely tough to beat imo.

Defending gold medalists Mirnyi/Azarenka also would be a tough matchup.
Yes. But who knows with Azarenka.
I'm inclined to agree that an Indian pairing could take Gold (subsequent to other pairings being announced) and that would be amazing for India.

No one wants to be the second choice. Wawrinka should tell Hingis off and just partner with Bencic or Bacinsky if healthy.

No one settes for Stan the Man.

This was back in March.

Roger Federer and Martina Hingis are the two Swiss living legends and it would be fantastic seeing them partnering at the Olympic Games in Rio. However, Roger is doubtful about that for practical reasons.

Federer: She approached me, but…

"She has approached me and I've said I'll give it some thought. The problem is I don't know how to play singles, doubles, and mixed within an eight-day period. If I try to win them all, it's like 15 matches in eight days. You tell me how that works. I don't know, I don't.

So I have to figure out things and what my priority is at the end of the day. Martina has done a lot for tennis in Switzerland and she was, I guess, to some extent a hero of mine. Seeing her on the tour basically when I was not knowing what I was doing on the tennis court and she was already winning Wimbledon and all those things, it was unbelievable to watch so I'll obviously give it some thought because I have a lot of respect for her."

Severin Lüthi, captain of the Swiss Davis Cup team, visited on Tuesday in the sports writing "Morning." There spoke the beautiful past year with the Davis Cup at his side, almost. But next year that looks very loaded with Rio Games between Wimbledon and the US Open.

"We know that Martina Hingis is awaiting a reply from Roger Federer to possibly team up in mixed doubles in Rio, said Severin Lüthi. This is normal, she would plan her next season. But I called Martina to say that Roger gave himself up to the end of the year to decide. Because playing three tables (note: men's singles, men's doubles and mixed doubles) in ten days, it's still a lot. "

In absolute terms, also taking into account the progress of Timea Bacsinszky and Belinda Bencic feminine side, can we imagine that the Swiss tennis round up all the gold medals in Rio brought into play? Severin Lüthi responds with a smile: "Ideally, if everybody is in top form, indeed, one can dream ..."

But it is not there yet. Meanwhile, you can get a better idea of the feelings of Severin Lüthi viewing the video report above.
