MLB 2019 Season: Shipping Up To Boston

dgold44

G.O.A.T.
I’m starting this thread about 6 weeks early since the hot stove is scorching.

Notable moves so far

Boston keeps World Series heroes eovaldi and pearce
Yankees add Paxton via trade
gNats add Corbin on a ridiculous 6 year deal
Phillies give mccutchen 3/50
Mets acquire Diaz and Cano via trade
Braves sign Donaldson
Phillies acquire segura via trade

Rumors

Mets looking to trade for realmuto either straight up or via 3 team trade with the evil empire
Mets Red Sox and Yankees all interested in ottavino and Robertson. Mets also linked to miller
Machado seems to be a lock for philly
No real rumors for Harper that strongly link him anywhere

I thought baseball ended centuries ago ??’
Wow

Baseball is still going strong. After all it is the American pastime. Really picked up in popularity after grappling died off.
Manager vs umpire “discussions” really pack in the kvetching crowd...everyone loves to see grown men acting like pre-teen adolescents.

Proud lifelong fan of The Evil Empire before Costanza’s boss owned them and now that his sons run the show; the Real Evil Empire is now a couple hundred miles north and east with the highest MLB payroll entering the season (NYY is third behind Cubbies too). Our highest paid player (Stanton) is now 14th in annual salary, four spots below your Stros’ highest paid SP Verlander.

Fairly ironic the label no longer sticks.

I hope Yanks get #28 this year but the century long streak of at least one AL title each decade must not be snapped (started in 1921). That IS a dynastic record!

Voit just hit a 3-run Jack for The Evil Empire in the bottom of the first, 3-0 over Orioles.

Over/under O’s losses...100 and I take the over.

61-101? Lol, yeah they won't be good this year, but I think they'll win more than 62 games. Probably like 66-70.

JdG picking up where he left off as the Mets blank the Nats 2-0. CYA went six, gave up 5 hits, 1 BB and got 10Ks. GM Thor is proud of the deal he bartered with the ace.

Still bitter over that 2007 implosion?

On paper they’re not better than was or ny and about even with atl. They still don’t have any starters worth a damn after Nola, weak bullpen after Robertson and Dominguez, weak defense, and a moron for a manager (although all the nl east managers are pretty bad imo). Also Harper had one good year four years ago and has been hitting in a better lineup in was, he’s not gonna magically hit like an mvp in a worse lineup

Damn I didn’t realize you had to go back 12 years to find a time philly was relevant. I guess that’s normal to not have much to root for when your team has 2 championships in 135 years.

I'd be shocked if we didn't acquire another pitcher at some point in the season. A lot will hinge on which version of Arrieta shows up.

Whoa, looks like those wounds haven't quite healed over yet. Those 2007-2011 years were a great time, even if we only got one championship out of them. Excited for that to be back for the foreseeable future

The O's in surprise of no one lose then the manager something to the tune of "If all you think about is the L then we are about more than that" WTF.

Oriloles magic, making it happen

Prediction wise

AL - NYY, CLE, HOU - Wc's BOS, Tampa
NL - ATL, CHI, LAD - Wc's WAS, SD

MVPs - Trout, Machado
Cy youngs - Kluber, Scherzer
ROYs - Guerro and Tatis Jr.

2/3 in Washington I’ll take it. Alonso looks like the real deal <3

Atlanta showing everyone that doing nothing to improve your team in the offseason doesn’t work. Three good hitters, no aces, and an awful bullpen. I take back what I said about Philly being even with Atlanta, braves are clearly the worst of the four contenders. Batting acuna 4th when he’s said multiple times he likes lead off better and is more comfortable there makes no sense.

Arrieta looked good minus the walks. His pitches had a ton of movement on them and his arm slot looked similar to his cy young season. They need one more pitcher or one of Pivetta/*****/Velasquez to break out.

Colorado, the other New York team, and Boston looked awful. First weekend and the Yankees got beat 3-1 against Toronto to open last season so nothing to worry about but still shocking.

Pineda made his return and threw 4 good innings. 1 hit no runs 5 k’s took him as a last round flier in both fantasy leagues hoping he’s a lottery ticket

Who at MLB thought “hey let’s schedule nats-philly in was on wed at 1, mets-Marlins in Miami at 7, then do the Mets home opener the next day at 1 and then give them Friday off” and “let’s out the WS champs on the west coast for a three series road trip to open the season then have their home opener 13 days after the season starts”

Bunch of morons. They screwed the Yankees last year putting them on Sunday night then a 1 and 7 game the next day last year. Do these people even think or just throw darts at a calendar

Some random thoughts about the season so far that don’t include the Mets

Meadows and Glasnow for Archer looks so bad now. Meadows is killing it and Glasnow looks like the real deal. Meadows looks like benintendi (20 hr 20 steals .290 avg 150ish r+rbis). Glasnow reminds me of randy johnson (tall and lanky, trouble with his release point early in his career, two pitches (fastball/curve instead of fastball/slider)) johnson didn’t really figure it out until he was 30 and glasnow is 24. Pittsburgh gave up on these two way too early.

Pham had played well for them, they’ve won something like 75% of their games with Pham in the lineup since they got him. If yandy Diaz ever learns to lift the ball Tampa will have gotten four really good players for basically free

Seattle has the #1 offense in baseball right now. They got rid of all the old gm’s players (Seager Zunino) who had low avg and struck out a lot and replaced them with some proven vets (Bruce Encarnacion) and young guys who had potential but never really broke out (Beckham Santana vogelbach). They also have a new hitting coach Tim Lake. If you look at the stats almost everyone’s k rate is down and hard hit rate is up. So it looks like the new coach has changed these guys’ approaches and swings so the new offense looks legit. They also have a nice mix of guys with speed (Gordon smith Beckham) so the offense looks like it should be really potent. Now if they could just get some pitching they could contend soon.

Luis Castillo in Cincinnati is finally realizing his potential as an ace. He looks a lot more confident on the mound and is starting to believe in the talent he has. His fastball change up combo is probably second to scherzer and no one else right now. This is also annoying me because I traded him right before the season started with mondesi for corbin and gennett thinking he and mondesi would both be cold more often than hot. It’s only two weeks but it looks like I’m gonna lose that trade.

The NY M*A*S*Hees keep winning despite an IL worthy of being the starting All-Star lineup. Tonight it took 14 innings to win 4-3 after Aroldis Chapman blew a save in the 12th vs the Angels. Four in a row and six of seven.

M*A*S*Hees win in Anaheim again 7-5 with two dingers by Voit and Princeton grad Mike Ford getting his first MLB homer and multi-hit game. German didn’t allow an earned run in 6-2/3 and is becoming the ace of the staff. Sadly, Chad Green is becoming the goat of the bullpen, yielding a grand slam in the eighth to let California back in. Britton came in to close.

Another one bites the dust. Clint Fraizer finally gets a chance and earned everyday playing time. He was absolutely mashing the ball. Then the injury curse bit him. Add another one to the IL

Wheeler pitched the best game of his life Tuesday night against the Phillies. 7 shutout innings 11 k’s. Matz has been fine minus that first inning blowup in philly and degrom should be fine. That means 3/4 are good to go, noah’s advanced stats say he should be around a 2.90 era but he also isn’t helping himself by having no put away pitch this year. He needs to elevate the fastball better or figure out a way to get that nasty slider he had in 2016.

Austin Meadows got off to a torrid start but ended up on the IL last week. Should be back in 2 weeks. Red Sox called up their top prospect Chavis to play 2nd and hopefully jump start the offense. Jorge Polanco is also off to a torrid start for the Twins. All his contact rate stats support this as legit and not just a hot streak. On a side note the twins lineup is downright scary for RHP. Every regular is a lefty or switch hitter. If you’re into fantasy, daily fantasy, or sports betting the twins are gonna be a moneymaker this year.

Carter Kierboom is making a case to be promoted to the majors. Nationals have always been aggressive promoters and dozier is awful so I wouldn’t be surprised to see a may call up and he takes over short and then moves to second when turner returns. The reds, who were a popular preseason playoff dark horse, have gotten off to a very slow start. The entire offense is ice cold. The cubs have also looked atrocious and kris Bryant looks like a shell of himself. Out west Colorado finally picked it up with a couple of home series.

CC gets his 3K strikeout in style, striking out the side in the third inning in the Yankees loss at Arizona. Sabathia pitched for the first time at Chase Field and completed the career cycle of pitching in every MLB stadium. He also became the third southpaw to reach 3K whiffs (Big Unit and Carlton) and 17th overall to reach the feat. Only Clemens and Schilling are not yet in the HOF. He is closing in on 250 career wins (needs three more) and 3500 innings pitched (needs 10 more).

Syndergaard beats the reds by himself yesterday afternoon. Complete game shutout and a solo homer for the games only run.

Player of the month - Tim Anderson and Cody Bellinger
Rookie of the month - Brandon Lowe and Pete Alonso
Pitcher of the month - Tyler Glasnow and Luis Castillo
Reliever of the month - Shane Greene and Kirby Yates

Hard to argue with any of those selections. German Marquez over Castillo is the only argument I can think of

If I told you at the beginning of the year that Domingo German would be the best pitcher on the Yankees and 2nd best in the AL and around 5-7th in the whole league 1/4 of the way through the season you would have laughed at me. I would’ve laughed at myself because there’s no way I would’ve said something so ridiculous. The guy was supposed to start at AAA and Severino, Tanaka, Paxton were gonna be a big 3 with Happ and CC rounding out the back end as solid contributors.

Well turns out German is breaking out a lot sooner than anyone would have predicted. 8-1 (1 relief win) 2.50 era 0.95 whip 52 k. He flashed talent last year but he was so inconsistent and the Yankees haven’t been great developing pitchers in the minors recently that I thought he was at least 2-3 years away. His FIP and the eye test suggests this is a real breakout but his SIERA and xFIP say he’s getting lucky so we’ll see but I’m buying this as a breakout.

In prospect news Chavis for Boston has been killing it. Corbin Martin for Houston shut down a good Texas offense in his debut, he gets Boston in Fenway this weekend. Senzel (Cin), Hiura (Mil) and Riley (ATL) all came up these past two weeks. Alvarez (HOU) and Gallen (MIA) are probably sometime later this month or early June.

Time for my semi weekly random thoughts

Christian Yelich over the past calendar year - .337/.426/.677 (avg/on base/slugging) 135-51-133-28 (r hr rbi sb). Only one person has done 130-50-130-20 in a single season. Any guesses? Hint: 1st ballot HOF stats but questionable to get in

Joey Gallo might be the most underrated young star in baseball right now. A little over 1/4 of the way through the season he’s sitting at .285/.417/.669 36-15-35. That’s a 140-60-140 pace. A lot of people believe he’s Adam Dunn 2.0 aka strikeout or homerun. Well that might not be true anymore.

His biggest weakness last year was chasing bad pitches out of the zone specifically the high fastball. He’s dropped his swing rate by about 10% for both outside and inside the strike zone. His high fastball chase rate has cut from around 40% to around 7%. This has resulted in a 6% increase in walk rate and better quality contact and for a guy who hits as hard as gallo that’s a scary thing for opposing teams.

His actual vs expected avg-SLG-woba are .285-.669-.455 vs .273-.698-.455. Basically this means this isn’t a hot streak or fluke. His avg will most likely decrease but should still stay higher than his .220 last year due to trading some flyballs for line drives. Add all of that to record setting barrels, exit velocity and hard hit % and that means Gallo has turned into a top 10 hitter in baseball imo.

My other must watch player this summer is Acuna. He’s slashing .278/.369/.490 and putting up 35-11-31-5. He was recently moved back to the lead off spot about 2 weeks ago and in that time has put up 13-3-8-3.

He’s striking out less, walking more, hitting the ball harder (more barrels higher exit velo higher launch angle). His actual vs expected avg-SLG-woba are .278-.490-.373 vs .309-.582-.413. Acuna has been massively underperforming so far. Expect a huge summer out of him and my bold prediction is that experts (real ones not self proclaimed ones like yours truly) are talking about him being in the same category as trout betts and yelich

AL MVP 2007 Alex Rodriguez (NYY) 143/54/156/24 on just 183 hits. All but SBs led MLB, as did his slugging/OPS/OPS+/TB numbers: .645/1.067176/376. Seasonal WAR 9.4 by a position player has only been surpassed since then by Trout, Betts and Harper.

AL 2B - Altuve over Moncada and Merrifield
AL 3B - Urshela over Devers
AL SS - Torres and Correa over Mondesi, Andrus, and Boegarts
AL OF - Judge over Mancini and Kepler
NL 1B - Rizzo over Alonso
NL 3B - Donaldson over Rendon and Escobar
NL - Almora, Heyward, Schwarber, and Pederson over Ozuna, Kendrick, Marte, Peralta, Hoskins, and Soto

Rendon and Devers are the two biggest snubs, they’ve been the two best 3B in the league lol.

And to make it worse, nobody can beat the Yankees lately. Life of a fan of the 2nd team in town. Yankees on their way to a WS (if they can by the Stros) while the Mets on their way to trade busts. I agree with most of it. I would’ve put Gallo as a starter but I get that he missed the last 3 weeks of voting. Grandal should’ve gotten in over Contreras and Story should’ve gotten in over Baez. If these two actually played a real game I can’t see the AL having a prayer the NL is loaded this year.

Yankees vs Bosox at London Olympic Stadium for the very first time produced the wildest game possible to introduce American baseball to the home country of cricket. The Yankees won a slugfest 17-13 that featured all 30 runs scored in the first seven innings. The “visiting” Yanks scored six in the top of the first but finished the inning only tied. Both starters (Porcello and Tanaka) failed to finish the opening inning. Much was made of the short center field (380 feet) dimensions but only two of the six dingers were aimed there and short enough to be catchable in either Fenway or Yankee Stadium. The Yankees finished their scoring in the fifth to take a commanding 17-6 lead and then hung on the next four innings to walk with the win.

The two-game series concludes this morning but the Yankees will be without slugger Luke Voit, who left the game with yet another injury for the Pinstripes. He is to be evaluated for his left abdominal strain after going 4 for 4 in the win.
