MSV Focus Hex ???

I just bought a set of MSV Focus hex 18g strings and they were suppose to be black. However when I got them in the mail and opened them they look more like gray to me. I asked the guy that sold it to me and he said MSV does not sell gray color strings.

I'd call the black more of a dark charcoal color. It's dark, but it's not black.

I showed my stringer the Prince Synthetic gut in black and he agreed that it looked really black. Then I showed him the MSV and we both agreed that it did not look black but more grayish black and charcoal like you said. I think that is probably the way it is.

Strang because I have 2 sets ordered from gut glory and they are indeed black.

Same here. Got a reel at Guts n Glory. Very black to me. Red's nice too.

The black MSV is not a pure flat black, but rather a unique black that is very dark in color and some might find in bright sunshine that it offers a subtle deep gray/dark blueish hue. Very cool color.

Ignoring subtleties, if you show the string to the average person on the street who is aware of colors and asked what color it was s/he would most likely respond with "black." Likewise if you asked a child to pull out a crayon of his 64 Crayola pack to match the string, s/he would certainly pull out the black one.

Most importantly, lest we not forget, the string plays extremely well!

I just took a look at a set of the Hex that I just got in some really bright sunlight, and it seems to have a very slight midnight blue hue to it, but honestly, if I just glanced at it, I'd say it was black.

I should get a set of this stuff in my racquet and see how it works. I'm using Big Ace right now and love it, but I wasn't sold on the Blue Gear. I've heard the MSV hex is really good, so I guess it's time for me to turn on the stringer.

I just strung my racquet up yesterday with the black version. You are correct about it looking more like a midnight blue rather than black. I would like it if it was darker but it does look way better than with the white string. Just got back from playing with it and I'm very impressed with how much more top spin I can create on the ball! A quick question for anyone who might know. I have my tension at 62 lbs and it is much more controllable than what I had. I think I may have read somewhere though, that the string performs best at a lower tension maybe around 53 lbs possibly. Anyone know if that is true? I just want to get the most out of the string.

^^^ swengo, I find that this string is a lot more elastic and soft than most polys, so going upwards of 60 is not uncommon. I've got mine right at 60 and it feels just right. I would imagine down at around 50, it would be too powerful to be any good.

Hex is pretty much between BA and BG. Its got the feel of the BA with the spin of the BG. What gauge is your usual BA setup and what gauge is your hex?

Has anyone tested the various gauges of the hex? I just bought 2 sets of the 1.18 and I'm very pleased with it and was wondering how it would compare to the others that are offered.

Since I just started playing with this string, I've been finding myself hitting into the top of the net more often than before with my old string. Anyone else have that problem when first using this string? I guess I just need to adjust my placement to the amount of spin I'm putting on the ball.

^ its probably just because you are used to using a higher powered string. With this string or any poly for that matter, you have to have a full, fast swing. If you find poly is inhibiting your game more than helping it, then you should find a different string.

Well I think part of it is not so much less power, because I have a full fast swing as much as it is more due to the fact that I'm creating more spin causing it to spin into the top of the net rather than hitting flat over the net. A couple more hours and I should have it all figured out. I hope!!

well if thats the case, then just try to hit with a little bit more margin for error (hit higher over the net). This will help by getting the ball deeper, and you can afford to do this because of the topspin you are getting from the string.

I have the 1.23 gauge red string in my racquet in a hybrid with 17 gauge Gosen Micro in the crosses. It's pretty good looking, but it doesn't seem to look as dark a red as Pro Supex Big Ace. It does definitely bite the ball more, and it's a very comfortable string, even though I strung it at 62#, which makes it a lot softer feeling than most other poly type strings.

I'd like to try the 1.18 or 1.10 gauge Hex strings next, since I'm pretty sure it'll take me a decent amount of time to break a 17 gauge hybrid.

I'm using the 1.18 right now and I like it a lot! My black is more of a grey or dark blue thought, like you said your red isn't as dark as some other strings.
