Come to think of it. If Nadal wins Madrid and Rome, he will surpass Novak's Masters titles 37>36 then onwards to 21st GS to beat Federer.
Yep, and I think in the coming years Nadal will have a much better chance of winning those clay masters than Djokovic will of winning hardcourt masters......plus Nadal loves Canada.
The young guys have truly figured-out Djokovic in best-of-3-sets.
Of course, its not easy for Nadal to win clay masters, but I think he's still got an edge over everybody else.....and that 2019 clay season was not normal, because he was recovering from ankle surgery.

An Open Letter to Rafa

Italian journalist Guido Monaco wrote a great open letter to Rafa:
G.Monaco works for the Italian journal “IL Tennis Italiano” and was a commentator for Eurosport's Italian-language channel from 2009 - 2019.

Guido Monaco:

¤¤ I would like to write a love letter to an athlete, a man, the greatest warrior sport has ever known.
For more than 15 years, with its completely uncommon performance,
characterizes this wonderful time of year...
The most important and most tradition period for us Europeans and for those who love and know the history of our sport.
Tennis on red ground or if you prefer battered ground, the surface that requires the most quality to excel.
Only those who are technically complete, tactical
and physical, only those who know who can suffer and vary can emerge and shine.
He gets in his personal bubble (the pandemic
for once it has nothing to do with it)
and from April onwards we have the privilege of witnessing a unique and unrepeatable show of strength, strategy and resistance. Endless.
Yet someone still has the courage to minimize and denigrate... it's strong ′′ only ′′ on earth, if it's not okay physically it's not going anywhere... as if the earth had suddenly become a minor surface and forgetting the enormous successes obtained even far from red.
A mix of superficiality, incompetence, lack of sports culture and rooting against to shiver.
Sure, with 20 Slams won in 28 finals, 13 Roland Garros, 12 Barcelona, 11 Montecarlo, 9 titles in Rome and 5 in Madrid, everything else seems little, secondary ..
More than the numbers count how you are on the pitch, how you fight point after point, always, forever.
Until knowledge is given, but sooner or later it will end, I guess.
Every now and then there comes a difficult period, a less convincing defeat or performance and many people judge ′′ it's not him anymore ′′ or ′′ it's over "... it's been happening for ten years now and then, there's no need to say how it ends up instead history, year after year.
The noise of the enemies You warn him and partially
you feed on it, but that's not what makes the difference,
It's something far deeper and more special to always bring you back up, even when you seem struggling.
Like last week in Monte Carlo.
Usually when this happens you don't just come back to winning, but to dominate your opponents.
Very strong opponents, but they are faced with a living legend. The problem, for your rivals and detractors, is that you are the first to rebel against an unsatisfactory standard and still have stimulus to train hard.
And then there's your hunger for victories, which yes, has nothing humane. This part of your brain will be donated to science to understand how you do it,
what moves you, again and then again!
The audience is back, in the stadium you titled not only in life but-case more unique than rare-when you're still in business.
And you're roaring again, punctual as in a magnificent and emotional deja vu.
I don't know when you'll stop leaving everything you have on the field, but you'll still have my eternal admiration and respect.
Anyone who doesn't appreciate the genre misses the show of the essence of sport in the most genuine and wild state.
Losing the best.
At a time when an important part of the most popular and richer sport (firstly the
Your beloved Real dear Rafa, no one is perfect, not even you) offers yet another terrible test of yourself, you are the purest and truest expression
of sport.
Your way of accepting and immerse yourself in the challenge reconciles with sport, but not only, is an inspiration to address many aspects of life.
Maybe you, once you finish your mission on the field, can commit to bringing back some ethics, balance and seriousness to the world of football. With your disarming simplicity, humility and work culture. Values you are already transferring to osmosis to everyone, in your wonderful Academy. Anyone close to you knows it's a goal that tickles and stimulates you.
A goal maybe even more giant than your unimaginable tennis triumphs.
You'd be very believable even in this role.
With all the sports love I'm capable of.
G M M ¤¤

The Rafa Nadal Foundation's "More than Tennis" project is aimed at promoting social inclusion of young people with disabilities. It's now more than ten years since the RN Foundation and Special Olympics Spain teamed up with a common goal: to promote the social inclusion of young people with an intellectual disability through tennis. That's how "More than Tennis" was born over a decade ago and by now, more than 1,200 athletes from all over Spain have benefited from it. "More than Tennis" is currently operating at 20 sports schools throughout Spain and 220 young people, mostly aged between 16 and 30, have participated in it per year. (Source: the RNF website)

I know Rafa always starts on Wednesday in these tournaments....Would it not be better for him to start on a Tuesday? Also for the tournament?
Madrid has very different conditions to other events because of the altitude and even the bounce/speed.....so Nadal probably likes to start as late as possible so he can have a training block in these different conditions before he plays a match.

I hear you and I’m sure that’s it...Sometimes I just think a break of even one day might help rather than try play 5 days in a row(provided he gets that far)...

Yeah hopefully the conditions help Nadal hit through Rublev more this time and avoid a marathon, if they meet in the SF.
That guy really knows how to run.
Plus if Nadal serves better (7 double-faults in the MC match), this is the place to use your serve.....

Media Day

The Madrid Masters website, May 2, 2021, translated from Spanish via Google:

¤¤ Nadal, ready for the #MMOPEN

Since arriving in Madrid, Rafa Nadal has been training thoroughly to prepare for the assault on his sixth Mutua Madrid Open crown. The first favorite in the Caja Mágica, a five-time champion, spoke to the media during Media Day and reflected on his fitness, how important Madrid is in his calendar and above all, his desire to play this week with audience in the stands.

How have you been training these days?
“I have trained well. In fact I trained double session on Friday, yesterday and I might do double session today. That is, I have trained more than three hours and three hours. I feel good, looking forward to playing here in Madrid. Going back a little more to what is strict confinement but with a big difference, and that is that we have an audience and that helps at an energetic level to tolerate everything else ".

Nowhere like home,
“Playing at home is always nice. We are talking about one of the important tournaments of the year, it is a Masters 1000, so, to be honest, the tournament could have been anywhere else and this week I suppose I would be competing. Taking into account that I have competed very little during the year. If the circumstances had been different, perhaps one can make another approach. But it will be my fourth event of the year and my schedule is clear. Barring setbacks, we will do what was planned which is Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Madrid, Rome and Roland Garros.

It's time to accelerate
“I have played little in the last year, I already said it in Monte-Carlo, and it's time to accelerate, to make a significant effort these three months to come. That is what I am focused on. Everyone knows what playing at home means to me and I hope to be ready to enjoy as many days as possible with the public here in Madrid ”.

With what feelings would you like to end the week in Madrid?
“What I would like is to win, basically. If I win it means that I have done many things well but if we talk about more specific things, I think that Barcelona was a step forward for me, so I think that what I would like to feel is that I am playing well ”.

“Wheather you win or lose, it's part of our sport and depends on conditions that are a little more uncontrollable like those of this tournament. But in general what I would like is to play as many games as possible and try to get the best possible result. Analyzing it at a more game level, having the feeling that the service has worked better, that I have felt safer on the court, that I have regained the feeling of control ... In the end it all comes down to one thing: playing well . And in the end things can be turned around a lot and I like to analyze them in a simple way. What I have to do is move well, hit the ball well and compete well. If that happens, the chances of the result being positive are greater and of going to Rome with a positive feeling, too ”.

What stage are you at ?
“The athlete feeds on training and results, that is a reality. I need to feel that I am playing well, that I play games, that I am competitive against everyone and this is what has happened since I have returned to competition ”.

“I lost a match to Rublev, I didn't play well at all, but I was competitive. In the end I fought and having almost nothing that day I managed to win the second set and I fought until the end. Competitiveness has not lacked me, the game has a little. In Barcelona the competitiveness was excellent, the game went from less to more and in the end it is the same as always. I felt very good training before Monte Carlo, I think I was in a fantastic moment of play but later, when you play very little for a long time, the day may come when the sensations are less good and the automatisms are more difficult to find " .

“When you have been playing a lot, there are always days that are worse, but when you have been playing a lot, you have won games and you have that bad day, it is easier to find solutions because they come more automatic. When one has played little, the solutions are more complicated to find and perhaps that is what happened to me in Monte Carlo. In Barcelona I already played more difficult games, I once again lived with situations of tension ... in Monte Carlo the first two days the games were very comfortable. I think I have made the right path to get here ”.

Wanting to meet more goals
“Every week is a different story and the only thing I can do is keep working with the enthusiasm, attitude and intensity that I am having and give myself the options to move forward with a positive mindset to try to continue, fulfilling objectives ”.

“Last week, I had a fantastic goal. I think it was a hard week, where I had to make tennis adjustments and overcome difficult moments. And it ended with a title. These titles when you win them without things going smoothly [Edited.], are the titles that have the most value internally. Looking forward with enthusiasm and positivity to play one more year here ”.

What do you miss about Rafa Nadal in 2005?
“I miss the youth. All the years that have been added, I don't like them. I believe that I have always been quite consistent, accepting every moment of life and my career. There are stages and moments that are to enjoy some things and to have some experiences and others to have others ”.

"Nostalgia? No, the truth is that I keep great memories of the different periods of my career. It is clear that in 2005 everything was new, it was a sensation of experiencing new sensations and emotions every week and now when you have been on the circuit for so many years the sensations are different, but you value it in a different way and not with less intensity. I do not have much nostalgia, I am happy today doing what I do with my life. If I look back, all the things that have happened to me have been very good and I can only give thanks. I think that at the sports career level until today, things have turned out much better than I dreamed of and I hope that I can continue to enjoy what I do for as long as possible ”. ¤¤

-------------------------------------------------------
Rafa's quotes from another source (translated&tweeted by Genny SS):

Rafa: "Athletes feed from training & results. I need to feel I'm playing well, playing matches & being competitive against everybody. And that's what's happened since my return. Competitiveness was there both in MC & BCN, the game wasn't fully there in MC, but in BCN it improved"

Rafa: "Everybody knows what playing at home means to me. Just hope to be ready to be able to enjoy the crowd here in Madrid for as many days as possible."

Rafa: "Playing in MAD has always been special. I always say the same but it's what I feel. The love & support of the people here has been huge, more than in any other place & I can only be thankful for it. Difficult to describe feelings when playing here."

Flashback

May 2, 2021

The 2nd of May is a public holiday in the Autonomous Community of Madrid.

And the Grand Cross of the Order of the 2nd of May is the community's highest honour. Rafa was honoured with the community's highest award last November:

Orden_Dos_de_Mayo.jpg

Madrid Metropolitan: ¤¤ Dos De Mayo [The Second of May] – A history of Madrid and Spain
Today commemorated as a public holiday in the city of Madrid, it celebrates the uprising of the people of Madrid against Napoleon´s army.
On the 2nd May 1808 the inhabitants of Madrid rose up against the French occupying force that had marched into Spain under the terms of the Treaty of Fontainebleau of October 1807 signed between the Bourbon Carlos IV of Spain and the French Emperor Napoleon. ...However the secret terms of the treaty were onerous to Spain with Carlos IV effectively being held as captive by Napoleon in the French Basque town of Bayonne. ¤¤

So I watched Nadal and Schwartzman’s competitive practice and here are some insights. I also decided to count Nadal’s serve stats as to my eye it looked like his first serve % stayed in low 40s if not mid 30s yesterday against Berrettini.

Nadal won first set 6-3, being broken 1 time. He served 2 aces and 1 double fault, 17/27 of first serves %, which is 62.9%

Second set wasn’t complete, but Nadal was leading with a break at 4-3, again being broken 1 time. 1 ace and 3 double faults this time, 11/21 or 52.3% of first serves.

What I’ve noticed, is how double faults and missed first serves come in clusters, for example at one point in the second set Nadal has missed something like 8 first serves in a row, making 3 double faults in process. Something alike happened in the first set as well.

Quite a bit of unforced errors off the forehand, though backhand looked rock solid to me, I didn’t notice a single BH UE.

The serve is definitely a concern right now.

When I visit this thread I really appreciate the efforts of the posters! Anyway I read the May 2 Media Day post with interest, but I don’t understand what was meant here (bolding the part I’m unsure about):

Anyone know what Rafa means about “things being rolled”?

Was Nadal doing his rituals before each serve?
