Rafa is participating in the Balearic Golf Championship for professionals taking place from July 3 to 5 at Marriott's Club Son Antem in Mallorca. His handicap allows him to compete with professionals. Rafa is tied for 2nd place after Saturday's 1st day of the championship.
In 2020, Rafa finished tied for 6th place overall and tied for 2nd place among amateurs. Last year, the championship was postponed to October due to the pandemic.

The RN Academy is part of the RN Sports Centre

Rafa's sports centre/academy expects to complete its expansion this autumn. It will be housing 3 indoor hard courts, 7 semi-covered (they have a permanent roof) clay courts and 8 outdoor clay courts.

Shelbayh makes history for Jordan after Nadal's words of encouragement

He was aware of the hand of history on his shoulder but Abedallah Shelbayh rose to the challenge to become the first player – professional or junior, man or woman, boy or girl – from Jordan to post a Grand Slam match-win at the Junior Championships, Wimbledon today.

“I knew what was at stake and I had some pressure,” Shelbayh told itftennis.com.

“I felt it and was nervous. A lot of people – family, friends and coaches – back home and from other Arab countries texted me. It’s obviously good that they are supporting me, but I felt like I had some pressure behind me.”

If he was straining under the weight of expectation, he did not show it. The 17-year-old defeated Mans Dahlberg of Sweden 6-4 6-3 to take his place in the second round where he will face No. 4 seed Bruno Kuzuhara of the United States.

While the next challenge is just around the corner, Shelbayh, who is ranked No. 41 in the boy’s rankings, is likely to have a host of congratulatory messages awaiting reply. That is what comes with making history on behalf of an entire nation.

“It is special,” said Shelbayh, who made his Junior Grand Slam debut at Roland Garros last month. “It is something that I don’t take for granted. I have worked hard for it and it was a dream to just play a Junior Grand Slam, let alone win a match.

“Playing a Grand Slam was a dream, now winning a match as well, it gives me confidence and hopefully I can keep doing what I’m doing, but it is so special for me.

“The first guy to play a Grand Slam, men or juniors, and winning a match here – Wimbledon is my favourite Grand Slam – is amazing. But it is not the goal to just win one match.

“I will enjoy this but not focus too much on what I have done. I need to keep focussed.”

Shelbayh’s first exposure to tennis was when his father, Khaled, was watching Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros on television and an inquisitive four-year-old started asking questions.

Khaled purchased a racket for the sport’s latest recruit and after initially hitting with his right hand, he switched to playing with his left after discovering Nadal on television for himself.

Fast-forward to 2018 and the next stage of Shelbayh’s development saw him enrol at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Manacor, where he has trained ever since.

Shelbayh has previously told itftennis.com that seeing Nadal on a daily basis and how hungry he is for more success despite his haul of 20 Grand Slam titles rubs off and acts as a major source of inspiration. Unsurprisingly, Nadal had some words of encouragement for his protégé before he departed for London.

“Before we [those from the academy who were competing here] left he spoke to us – he is always supportive,” added Shelbayh. “It wasn’t tactics as such, but he was giving us advice about what to do.

“He is so experienced and been here and played these tournaments so many times. He has enough experience to tell us how to deal with the pressure. It is not as easy for us as it is for him, but he gave us some tips which was really great.”

I just presumed he would play the 2 1,000 Masters but you are probably/hopefully right.....

Hopefully in the US there no more bubbles/quarantines/all the stuff but hard to keep up with it all! I know it varies from state to state....

Actually I read on Twitter (and this makes sense) that he may logically skip Toronto and play Cincinnati if he is skipping one of the two.

If he skips Toronto he still keeps 500 points and he gets to avoid the Canadian COVID bubble and rules.

You HAVE to go. It might be the last time you ever get to see Rafa live. You have to make up your mind pretty quickly though as tickets are going very fast. They can only sell to 50% capacity and from reading the Washington Post and other media, the Rafa signing is making a huuuuuuge splash. I'll post an article that will give you some idea of what a big deal this appearance is going to be. So get off your asss and book some tickets because we want to hear your stories about it all. ;)

It's been many years since Rafa has been able to walk around any tournament without getting bombarded, or even any city. He's too nice a guy too because he'll stop and give a selfie and an autograph to anyone who asks.

Getting the first member of the ‘Big Three’ (Roger Federer, Nadal and Novak Djokovic) to attend the Citi Open since Federer’s first year on tour in 1999, was the result of a process that began a few years ago.

“Since we took over the event two years ago, we’ve made a real point to outreach to all the top players to tell them about the event, the experience they would have and why they should consider coming to Washington,” Mark Ein, Citi Open Chairman and CEO of MDE Tennis, told NBC Sports Washington.

“[Nadal] had never been to Washington, D.C., [Nadal’s team] reached out to us as a couple weeks ago and said this is something they were considering. We obviously did everything we could to show them that Washington would be a fantastic place for him to play and also have an experience for a city he’s never been.”

The decision from the current No. 3 player in the world came just two days prior to the announcement. Past the main draw deadline for the event held from July 31 to Aug. 8 at Rock Creek Park in Northeast, D.C, he had to receive a Wild Card entry.

Washington will be the first tournament for Nadal in two months. Nadal elected not to play at Wimbledon or the Tokyo Olympics after his semifinal loss to Djokovic in the French Open. The Spaniard wanted to focus on his body and getting back to peak form on the tour. Because of the pandemic, Nadal did not play in the United States during the 2020 season. His last tournament in America was his championship at the 2019 U.S. Open.

Back in the 1990s, Andre Agassi was a mainstay in the field winning it five times and prior to him was Connors, Lendl and Arthur Ashe. The Bryan brothers have also been prominently featured in doubles competition.

Nadal will bring it to a different level in 2021 and the Citi Open is excited for the District’s response.

“He transcends tennis. He transcends sports. I mean he’s one of those one-name people when you say Rafa you know who we’re talking about,” Ein said. “To me what it means the most to are the kids in our community are going to get to come see him in person firsthand. See him, see him practice, see him play and hopefully inspire future generations of tennis players sports stars, business people, whoever who just get inspired by seeing the world’s best right in their own community.”

It's been many years since Rafa has been able to walk around any tournament without getting bombarded, or even any city. He's too nice a guy too because he'll stop and give a selfie and an autograph to anyone who asks.
