Nadal's serve and vollies

Are they really that bad? I don't know how hes been playing now but I thougth his serve was pretty solid. He may not get that many aces but doesn't it set his point up well? His vollies I can see as not his strong point but are they really that bad? I'm not necessarily saying they're great but I am just curious, whats so bad about his serve and volley?

i didnt think his volleys were awful to be honest, but his serve while quite effective for him is very low on the totem pole compared to basically any other top 20 pro.

He is a terrible serve-volleyer. That's why he primarily only uses it as a surprise tactic.

Terrible? Hardly. He is a decent serve-volleyer. No, he isn't Pete Sampras but big whoop. He still manages to put away his shots effectively.

His serve is underrated here. His volleys are pretty good, he can make a lot of spectacular ones, but he also misses some easy ones.

Still the weakest parts of his game.

Keep in mind that he's right handed but serves with his left hand.

He has a 68% first serve this year, so even though it's not 130mph, it's consistent and usually well placed.

His volleys are very good, don't know where that came from.

that's an all-court game. Yes he has good hands and good instincts about when to come in and is very very good at putting balls away. I would say he is ok at that.

But in terms of pure-S/V he is pretty bad. or it's more correct to say he would be pretty bad if he ever tried to do it as more than a surprise tactic. As deltox said his serve is just not good enough. He would get killed.

Nadal+s&v on consistent basis=disaster
serve isnt big enough and lacks the heavy kick of an edberg to be effective. his volleys lack putaway sting and are best used when the court is open and he could hit a drop volley or sharply angled volley

Okay, as a pure-S/V I agree. But then who plays pure-S/V these days? He doesn't really have to worry about that because nowadays everyone is so darn good at passing that the part of the game doesn't need to be quite as fully developed.

Ehh it's becuase compared the top 10 he is not that strong really only Davy serves worse than him and volleying I think only Gonzo and Simon volley worse than him.

I don't think he's a 'terrible' S&V, it just doesn't suit his game. He's a baseliner/grinder. To be a S&V, your serve has to be up to a much higher standard than his.

We shouldn't have to keep in mind that he's a righty but plays lefty. He's been playing this way since he was a kid.

I wouldn't knock Gonzo's volleys. An Olympic gold medal in doubles, he has. I've seen him come in off generally good approaches, and he knows what he's doing at the net.
