Is anyone down in Miami this week? I’m curious how the new venue is. The old one looks better in pictures to my eye (bayside park with trees vs. stadium parking lot with freeway), but pictures can be deceiving.

What did they do with the old tournament site? That old center court stadium was always an iconic reminder of early season tennis on pro tour.

They wanted to commercialize the park. They strong armed and told them do it, or we leave. They said, buh bye.
The new venue is a temporary tennis court built inside an American football stadium that's home to the miami dolphins.
The smaller courts are built in the car parks of the stadium. The whole stadium surrounded by a giant concrete car park.
Theyve swapped the picturesque biscayne site for a football stadium and car park that has nothing to do with tennis.
And this used to be called the 5th slam...

The announcers on TV acted like the new venue was great. Center court looks cool but who would want to wander the grounds/practice courts? Also court 2 a joke compared to IW.

The renders for the new arena looks pretty nice to me. It’s not just the money issue, there’s already a lot of voices within players the last few years on how the old site just isn’t good enough anymore and needed something different.
Depends what you mean by new arena. Its just a temporary Tennis court and seating built on the 30 yard line of the Miami Dolphins stadium.
Now ok, some indoor tennis tournaments are held in exhibition centres, but Miami has history, this is meant to be one of the biggest Tennis tournaments of the year.
Alongside Indian Wells its meant to be the 2 most important tournaments outside of grand slams. At least hold it at a Tennis venue rather than a football stadium.
Today's players are spoiled brats, who wouldn't last a month on the old pro tour, or be happy on the old sham-amateur tour.

Pretty sure it was one rich crank blocking the improvements so they had to move after waiting over ten years for action. One good thing I see raised is outer court size. With WTA here as well that's not going to be good. Looking forward to seeing it and it should be an improvement overall with hopefully better attendance.

To be honest this seems to be an outdated view these days. Players pretty much view Masters worth the same.

Disagree. I think IW has a prestige that many other tournaments (Madrid, Paris, Shanghai) lack.

13,800. So what theyve done is built seating on 3 sides of the court and then using the seating from the football stadium on the other side. It looks a mess.
It's a shame. What the Miami Open had, was the unique Key Biscayne location. When you were in the stadium court in the cheap seats, you could stand up and look across and see the bay all around. The drive over the water to the key was uniquely Miami. On the outer courts you were a few feet away from the game. There was always a breeze even if it was hot. And the fact that it was played in a public facility was a nice element.
Even though I live in the area and used to go the Miami Open in Key Biscayne at least two days, I didn't buy tickets for this one. I have no interest in going to a parking lot next to the Turnpike roar in the middle of nowhere. No matter if they have a few bigger restaurants, the old ones in Key Biscayne never seemed to be a problem.
To be fair and from what I read, IMG wanted to develop the Key Biscayne site and improve it, but the park was under a set of restrictive covenants from the family that donated the use of the land, which were intractable. For whatever reason the family wouldn't bend, and it seems IMG was forced into this arrangement with the Dolphin's owner. Predictably, the losers are the fans. The ticket prices are higher, the parking is $40 from what used to be $10. There was always an element of affordability to the Key Biscayne tournament, if one was willing to put up with some inconvenience as in taking a bus from the parking lot to the site. It never bothered me, it was part of spending the day down there.
I see they are hypeing the new location aggressively, my Twitter feed is full of players talking about how great it is, which I doubt is a coincidence. I hope it works out, but I am sitting this one out.

The heir of the people that owned the park is the one that spearheaded not allowing expansion.
His family only gave the park land so the county would build a huge expensive bridge over the causeway that would also get people to their other land and make it more valuable.

I am with you. I used to go to Crandon park until 2009. To go from a tropical setting to a parking lot shows a real disrespect for the consumer. I would rather go to Delray. I came back from a long hiatus from here just to bash this venue change. It is a prime example of a disrespective rich class that has no values. Tennis, to them, is no different than finding a cheaper way to can beans.

Just watched the video and the stadium looks fine. Let's hope things go well and they expand the other courts to a larger size. Grandstand is "OK", but they need a bigger show court beyond the stadium and did not see any evidence of anything that compares to Indian Wells. Still this is progress over being crammed in Crandon and the boost in ticket sales is the ultimate arbiter of success.

I never seen a walk through of the original venue so I cannot compare but I think they tried to at least add some greenery to break up the concrete. Was funny seeing the faux grass, thought they were trying to imitate Indian Wells. I think it looks decent but compared to the photo you posted, I think I would have much preferred the original location.

No, I read the thread and wanted to see if anyone on YouTube made a video tour of the place so that was what I found. Here is a quick video I found showing bits and pieces of the old venue and I think the original location looks much better.

Sounds like the old venue was done. No real opportunity to make it better. It's highlights was the scenery and location. Very unique.
Now with the new venue--problems of the old are solved--more space, better facilities but you lose the beautiful scenery and bayside location.
It will be interesting to see how the main court fairs. Almost looks there are going to be some odd gaps or seating.
Unfortunate, they couldn't find a prettier spot in Florida.
Outside of the weather, looks like you could have set this up in any midsized to major sized city and it wouldn't really make much of a difference.

Well you are discounting Miami. It's about the same distance from Hard Rock Stadium to South Beach as it is from Crandon Park to Coconut Grove (which was one of the areas the tournament had hotel deals and shuttle buses).
