newb question: how come on my crank, the linear gripper isn't gripping any string?

im totally new to stringing on a crank, i hope i haven't broken the mechanism yet!

hi, just got a used ektelon DE and was curious, when you turn the crank clockwise, isn't it suppose to (the linear gripper) grip the string? mine is not doing that....

also, when i got it, it seemed to be locked, like the crank won't turn, then i moved the locking lever allen screw inside a bit, and somehow, there is no brake or resistance anymore....

can someone give me advice please.

Don't know what kind of stringer you have. I have a Gamma X-ST with a linear gripper. When you put the string into the gripper, you also have to push the gripper towards the racquet so it engages the mechanism that applies the inward force to the gripper.

Latch releases once tension is reached.
You have to press it back, and only then you would be able to turn the crank.

Yes I also have to push the gripper foreward, and then turn. Or you could hold the excess string to the side and turn, it really does the same thing.
