Novak’s problem.

In 3 out of 4 years, winning the a grand slam includes 4 tournaments. When the olympics is in however there are 5 titles to win. Because Steffi Graf pulled off the “golden slam” and was rightly lauded for it, in an Olympic year a grand slam will be seen as being diminished if a player wins all 4 but loses the
Olympic title. Djokovic bought into this when he chose to go to Tokyo.

CYGS without Olympics is "diminished"? I'll take me this "diminished" achievement every day of the week

If Nole wins the CYGS, no one will remember him not winning the Olympics.

That said, I'm glad the meaningless "Golden Slam" is off the table. Imagine the annoying threads had he won it.

No Golden slam for him. That should make the off season more....sufferable....here.

Come now. If he wins the US Open, you cannot with a straight face tell me either he or his fans will be kicking themselves over this. Haters might bring it up in a desperate attempt to take the sheen off, but make no mistake, those people will be clowns.

It's a big deal right now in isolation purely because it's a title he's wanted for years, shed tears over, and prioritized. It has no meaning in relation to those other 4 tournaments. Get real.

All I’ll say is if he does actually do the CYGS it will be the first man to do so in 50 years. The most important part of the story is that he’d break the record for Slams at 21. If that’s a problem I would love to have it.

Again it’s all to play for at the USO, which is really the best case scenario. I think Djokovic losing the invincibility factor helps give the tournament a new complexion as well. He trains like a madman and makes tactical changes after losing, and Nadal will have done exactly the same.

USO will be fun; I do hope that Djokovic completes the CYGS there but you can never write Nadal off completely.

I don't agree with it, but if he wins the USO there will be people who will bring up the missed Golden Slam. Oh well.

Cheer up Djokovic fans - your hero has the chance to win not one, but two bronze medals. That's a great achievement, as there are only three medals per contest, so he is a top finisher in two contests - something the vast majority of olympians can only dream of.

I would've preferred silver. Then we could call it the Silver Slam, which is at least alliterative and sounds cool. Like the Silver Surfer.

I don’t like the term golden slam as it implies the Olympics is big enough to modulate the quality of the calendar slam which is on another level. Should just say calendar slam + Olympics as a bonus.
Well, going off your username, we all can see that you're not good at titles or phrasing.

Thanks

Agree, I think CYGS sounds better and more powerful than Golden Slam... Even people that follow tennis could ask them selves "wtf is Golden Slam"...

I said that even before the Olympics in another thread. Attaching the Olympics to the achievement almost diminishes it.

Yeah, no Golden Slam on the cards anymore, but hopefully that takes off some pressure.

Sure, it won't be as great as a Golden Slam, but a CYGS is still the holy grail of tennis if he can pull it off.

And to imagine he could have won the "Golden Slam" in a non-(summer) olympic year (even if it says Tokyo 2020).
- That would have been truly unique.
Such a shame he squandered this opportunity...

You know you are living in cuckoo land, when you claim a potential 4 slam season is diminished. :) Novak has won 3 slams thus far this year - which is a Fabulous achievement by itself. He has tied for the most slams won, and is most likely to land on top of the heap. He is the favourite for the US Open this year and shooting for the CYGS.

You conjuring up this idea of "diminished" shows a preemptive attempt at very sour grapes!

Place your bets where your mouth is? Are you willing to bet right now Rafa won't at least make the USO semifinal?

The next best thing to Djokovic winning IMO would be Thiem smashing through the big 3, one after the other.
He may have been injured all year, but remember:

That's never going to happen

Sorry to tell you that mate

He was done even before hurting his hitting wrist, now he's extra done. Wouldn't be surprised to see him call it a year soon.

I have to laugh when I hear the "Thiem is done" comments. He's not going anywhere. He had a quick surgery and is now lying in wait.

In terms of him smashing through the Big 3, I want Nadal to get more majors first :happydevil:
