NYC Crowd Cheering Our Djoker's Double Faults.

No, the cheering had nothing to do with wanting a long close match as Brooksby was already up one set. It was active hatred.
Little do these hapless spectators know that our Djoker only feeds off of this negative energy.

What Lleyton said. Plus, I really think he doesn't care anymore, you can see it in his eyes he is just focused on the tennis court and what's happening there.

It was one double fault in a tense game, happens to any player when the opponent has strong support.
You beat me to that reply. The crowd has been fair tonight, certainly so considering an underdog 20-year-old American really played great, savvy tennis for a set and a half or so. I think - with the possible exception of a match versus Alcaraz (not predicting it), Novak will start getting the lion's share of the crowd support.

You may cheer for your favourite player but you never ever cheer on a double fault. It is an unwritten rule. Particularly one that is chasing an historic CYGS.
Very odd. What is the appeal of this Brooksby?

The decline and fall of standards of civility in American public life ... sigh! ... must be social medai or whatever nonsense the young folks get up to these days.

Some drunkard woman just screamed at Djoker during a point. Is alcohol served in Melbourne?

I mentioned in the match thread about being surprised they were being so well behaved, especially during the first two sets when they really could have gotten rude. They were more than fair tonight considering there was an American kid on the other side of the net.

How long have you been watching tennis, by the way? Because the crowds there used to be really belligerent.

That’s absurd. If Medvedev double faults on championship point, the crowd should be dead quiet as Novak celebrates the calendar slam?

The US crowd had always been cavemen and Djoker had always enjoyed taunting the crowd that does not support him. They really deserve each other.

Not everything is social media’s fault (but for the record, i agreed social media has a shltstain of the 21st Century).

Did you notice when Brooksby missed an overhead (unforced error) and Djokovic raised his arm up and tried to get the crowd to cheer?

Did not see that but it is different after a long rally. Djoker could have made some great gets which ended on opponent's UE. He then asks the crowd to cheer for his effort, not the opponent's UE. That is completely different to cheering a double fault.

I don’t think Novak expects anything but hate from Wimbledon and US open crowds. He just comes here plays and only interacts with his box. OTOH at AO and RG he gets the crowd support to some extent and he engages with the crowd there. You’ll never see Novak responding to hecklers at WB or USO the way he does at the other 2 slams.
Actually the NY crowd should just cheer for him, it might actually confuse him.

If this was Nadal you would not condone it. Not good for the game in general.

As much as people refuse to believe it, I like multiple players, and want them to do well. Unless you are a hardcore Novak fan, supporting anyone on tour is currently pointless and that needs to change. At least when Rafa was still playing well there was somewhere where Djokovic could still be stopped. Like Nadal or hate him, at least there was at least ONE more guy on tour playing well in slams. For the foreseeable future, Djokovic will play mediocre tennis and win every single slam.

Yeah they don’t like him, but that’s okay cause he doesn’t need them to like him. In fact when he holds up the trophy, his fans will give him his due, and I’m sure that he’ll enjoy the rest pounding sand.

I must be the only one here who finds the crowd civil and respectful.
I watched most of the match and while they were clearly encouraging Brooksby, a lot of Djokovic's best points were long applauded. Nice standing ovation for both in the end. Good atmosphere overall.

Just because they root for 1 player doesn't mean they hate the other player, like it's suggested here. And I definitely didn't hear all this cheering on double faults. You are not interprting it correctly.

I was there tonight and there was only cheering on double faults once or twice. About 3/4 of the crowd was cheering for Brooksby and 1/4 for Novak. Since Brooksby is American that makes sense. I overheard strangers talking to one another and saying they want Djokovic to win even though Brooksby is American - the rationale being that Brooksby has the rest of his career to achieve great things, but we will likely only ever get this chance to witness a grand slam on the men's side in our life time.

You are entitled to be wrong concerning the crowd. The best tennis crowd ever. Honestly, forums may be the ****stain of the 20th century. impossible to have a healthy debate about anything.

It was during the 20 minute long critical game in the second set. Djoker serving 3-1. Loudly cheering an opponent's DF is never acceptable. Never. Every tennis fan knows this.

About 3/4 of the crowd was cheering for Brooksby and 1/4 for Novak.

Wow. Would have thought it would be 60% against. But it was 75%. Do these people not understand they are witnessing History?

This. These people would have felt absolutely awful if our Djoker had lost. What do these fools want to tell their grandchildren:
(A) "We were there in NYC when Djoker won R4 of the historic 2021 CYGS."
(B) "We were there when Brooksby ended the CYGS."

Crowds in Melbourne do exactly the same thing, you just don't notice or care because they don't do it to your Novak.
