As there is another thread about # of Grand Slam match losses to eventual champion:

Lendl --------- 23 ------------ 4, 5, 5, 9
Federer ------- 21 ------------ 6, 7, 4, 4
Djokovic ------ 21 ------------ 3, 9, 2, 7

I was wondering what about eventual champion and/or finalist:

Lendl 30 - 8 ,5, 8, 9
Federer - 32 10, 10, 7, 5
Djokovic - 27 3, 11, 4, 9

What stands out? Federer either won or lost to the eventual finalist/champion 16 times at the Australian Open, 15 times at Wimbledon.

Of course, Nadal has won the French Open 14 times and lost to the eventual finalist/champion 3 other times there.

Lendl the biggest underachiever in mens tennis? @BeatlesFan
No. Ivan's 8-11 record in slam finals is on him.

I don't make excuses for all the choking he did in majors. I don't expect him to have beat Borg in their 1981 FO final or Mac in their 1984 USO final. But there's no excuse losing 2 straight USO finals to old Connors or allowing Wilander to serve and volley his way to the '88 USO title. And most especially, losing the 1987 Wimbledon final to Pat Cash!

To me, Mac is the great underachiever in tennis. With his talent, he should have won 12 slams instead of 7.

Cash hated Lendl. He accused him of being an arrogant bully, disrespectful to the lesser ranked players and a racist to boot. He was fired up by having to play him in the 1987 Wimbledon final and he said beating Lendl for that title was the icing on the cake for him.

Was never a fan of his on-court antics but fully agree about his talent. I always felt that he wasted too much time with the antics and that it probably stopped him from winning more than he should have. I suspect that he would agree with that too!
