Ojai Tennis 2013

Well... Who is who?

The guy in blue looks very good. He hit at some ridiculous angles at some points off his forehand.

I hope you are just being silly with that comment.
Maybe. They are college players, they're higher than 4.5 IMO. They are not pro form yet, but they're much better than 4.5. 4.0 (Jason) to 5.5 (Granville) stands the TW playtesters, although they may be playing better than this in tournaments, or better than most 4.0/5.0 since they play tennis for a living.

Well, he's correct. A 5.5 is at least a 4.5. If he proves himself in college, which he will unless he's injured, then he'll be considered a 6.0.

I'm not overly impressed by Gage's serve, but he hits some nice forehands in that video. Also, the quickness of his little adjustment steps is impressive!

I also have videos of me playing doubles at Ojai but I think you guys prefer to see Gage haha
Oh, I missed this part. Please, do share, I like to see good doubles. Although you need a high enough camera angle to be able to appreciate something...:(

EDIT: So I guess Gage Brymer is the guy with Babolat Propulse 4 and APD, isn't he? What. A. Forehand. No wonder he doesn't play many backhands with such a shot... His BH kinda sits and go much slower in comparison. But that point is blew off by the fact he's able to use it to set up a forehand winner.

Yep, that's Brymer. He's playing for UCLA next year. They have a bunch of big name recruits. He was the top of the rankings from what I've seen of the graduating class from California. I don't know how he compared for the entire nation.

I know University tennis/sports are quite big in America, but I'm not accustomed that system being French. Not that there isn't university sports in France, it's just not as big IMO and I simply don't know how it works. Can someone give me some informations please?

He's #2 in the US of A in 18 and under. Just won the Easter Bowl and is probably a 4.0 [sarcasm].

Hum... What's the Easter Bowl? I check the website and I don't understand much except it seems to be an important tournament. And 2nd 18 and under player of all the country? Now that's impressive. EDIT: Not familiar at all with the ITF system in USA. Say, how come he was unseeded? I mean, even in France you're given a ranking if you lay off from tennis few years to avoid old guys not having a ranking but knowing how to play to be mixed with complete beginners.

he's unseeded because he doesnt play ITF-sanctioned tournaments very much. most of those tournaments are in europe. his national federation ranking is very good, but the international ranking from ITF is another system entirely.

It's just college team tennis. There is a national champion team in each division and then also individual titles. Also, League titles. A school like UCLA wants to be nationally competitive in Division 1 (the best division - UCLA has something like 40,000 students), so they are willing to give full athletic scholarships to good players. Some of the best players in Europe are playing for US Colleges because they can get a free education playing tennis, and the competition can be quite good.

It used to be that very good players went directly to the tour, but it seems that young guys are having a harder time competing these days, so some choose to do some college tennis first. Isner is an example.

The players on a team like UCLA probably start at 5.5 ntrp and go up from there. Some of the better players hope to have a professional career.

From what I understand, Brymer goes to a public high school and doesn't travel much to play, so he doesn't have an international ranking. However, he has done well against some players who do.

Amazing how things go. He won the first round in 3 sets, won the second in 3 sets with a tiebreaker, and ended up winning the Easter Bowl tournament.

Great to watch, thanks for the vid! You guys have some serious skill and talent.

Ojai is a really prestigous tournament and i was greatly honored to even compete in it let alone win a round (doubles only, not qualified for singles)

Imteresting note: its funny how players scream "lets go norcal/socal!"

So basically he's the personification of the guy no one wants to draw? Impressive.

props man. still great that youre competiting at this level. a few guys I know who havr 'real jobs' now played on the canadian jr circuit growing up. some of them even have winning records vs raonic. its a cool anecdote to tell people, and the experience of playing at the elite level carries over in some degree in whichever career you ll choose for yourself later

Thanks for the editing job, I appreciate it. Raw, unedited footage are extremely annoying to watch.

Look to original post all links there

thanks, I found it. Nolan paige can really play. Gave Giron all he can handle. Kind of Odd though. Paige all of sudden started serving all his 1st serves at the body of Giron about mid way thru 1st set. Was the wind the reason why he did this ?

No, I mean, which one is which one? Is Fritz the guy in red or not? The guy in red has such a quick service motion I though I was watching Montanes or Dolgopolov serving. EDIT: Both have very uncommon service motions/preparations. EDIT2: If you could also put the score of the match in the description that would be nice. Thanks. Have you got one handers in you vids?

In Ojai today, Easter Bowl champion Gage Brymer won his third consecutive CIF singles title, the first player to accomplish that since Bobby Riggs did it in the 1930s. Brymer defeated Taylor Fritz, who finished third in the 16s Easter Bowl this year, 6-3, 6-0 in the final of the tournament for high school tennis players in Southern California.

Unreal.

So the guy in red was Fritz. It's still an impressive scoreline since, well Fritz doesn't play even bad. Will wait for the video though. Thank you, and thank you OP.

Fritz guy has a big forehand. Surprised he doesn't generate more pace on his serve. It looks like a very lazy motion with little explosion. It could probably be pretty big with some tweaks. Other guy had a very weird motion but could really bring it( although his first serve percent for the first game was abysmal, he seemed to be hitting the white part of the net almost every time). Would kill to have the build of some of these guys, it's so easy for them.
