Does anyone knows if there is progression style to teach a one hand slice backhand. I've seen so many post but don't see one that really will stick to new tennis player.

Thanks,

I have this theory...

...that the keystone strokes are the backhand volley and the overhead. If you can get a backhand volley wired, it's not much of a jump to come up with a decent slice backhand or backhand service return. Similarly, if you can hit an overhead when the ball is weaving around in the jet stream, all you need is a toss, and presto, you've got a serve...

I don't know - when I first started playing, my backhand slice was far and away my most reliable and effective shot. Of course, coming from 12 years of competitive badminton experience, that probably had something to do with it.

What I do a lot with beginner is to try to get them to do a "backhand volley" but letting the ball bounce instead of really hitting a backhand volley. This way it really keeps the swing short, and focuses more on the contact point while keeping the wrist still. Once the player understand this, then you can make the swing a bit longer, and introduce more weight transfer...for example, getting the player to walk forward as they finish the swing to keep their momentum forward. Here's a good tip on the backhand slice http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVQCiDSrNCg
