Pace! Are you sure you understand what pace is?

I'd like someone to tell me what pace is and be correct.

Do I understand "pace" and what it is? Absolutely.

Looks like many don't.

Give it a shot. Pun intended. :D

I have seen this topic discussed too many times. I assume that is why you will get few serious answers.
Because I can't think of anything funnier than the things already mentioned, I will just recapitulate
the general opinion of previous surveys.

There are basically 3 elements to "pace".

1. The speed that the ball travels through space. The speed of the ball through the air is determined by,
several factors- but, to somplify, let's say force applied to the ball, which is then transmitted to (impact) the
opponent's racket.
2. The spin of the ball, added to the speed, also imparts energy to the ball which can also affect the oppoent's handeling of the ball.
3. The "psychological" aspect. The ability of the opponent to judge the various forces applied to the ball can make the actual
"pace" seem even greater when he/she is not prepared to control that force with their own racket.

Oh, wait, I looked it up. Pace is the time you consume between points.
Nadal, for example, wipes his face, adjusts his shorts, bounces the ball and gets a time warning.
Others prepare for serve at a faster pace.

Speed is simply MPH (or KPH) associated with a shot - what else can it be?? Pace could be the tempo of the game, I'm guessing, decided by how quickly the ball gets back to the hitter. The pace could be very high in an S&V game, I suppose, without the ball speed getting to be too high. When playing guys way above my level, even though the ball speed is not too high for me to handle, I find I am always rushed because my opponent takes every opportunity to step in and play the ball really early.

One drill my girl coach did with me about 10 years was to count how many balls we could hit in a minute, the only rule being that the ball had to be rising when passing the baseline.

I think we managed 26 balls/minute. She indicated that with another coach she would do over 30, while world class juniors do 42 and Nadal 54....

I may not be able to define it, but I know it when I see it.

But I agree that it's a tempo thing both in how quickly the balls are getting back to you in a rally but also how quickly the server is getting ready between points.
You can have the pace of a rally, the pace of the server and the pace of the game. All really mix speed and time into a tempo.

Pace can be used to refer to speed such as a pace bowler in cricket or changing pace to denote changing speeds. Similarly, a fast paced serve in tennis.

However that term is also used to denote tempo as others have said. In tennis you can be playing slow, hitting softly and still be controlling the pace of the match. When you say someone is playing at his own pace that’s what it usually means.
