This is probably the best comment in this entire thread. This is why I called out Steve Simon from the get go. He is grandstanding to make a political statement. Unless he's an idiot (which is possible) he would know making this kind of public statement would achieve nothing. That Tennis Canada copied his statement almost verbatim is equally idiotic.
Again like Bart you don't know they haven't tried. He also said during the interview he attempted to reach out to China and their tennis federation and got no response.

Well I am not sure its gotten worse. Its always been pretty bad. I mean we have more information now in things that we know. But during the great famine and the great leap forward the estimates of how many were killed are in the 10s of millions. But you are not wrong. The west and how we deal with them is an issue. Always has been,
America should focus more on keeping its own democracy standing. It's looking increasingly fragile. This whole vilification of China is in no small measure an effort to distract from the internal corruption that is ailing America.

Sure, they might have tried. And they should have left it at that.
Really? Thats not reality. Sorry. The WTA is not just going to ignore one of their tennis players disappearing with no explanation. I mean at this point its bigger than just her. Every women who plays on the tour wants to know that this federation at least will be involved if they go missing after a statement of any consequence.

The US has plenty of problems and it may well be a defective democracy. That’s still much better than authoritarian China.

Ok now you have gone off the deep end to. Blocked. This isn't just America. The entire western world is asking. The WTA isn't just America.

If the WTA had any brains they'd appoint a mediator, who would engage in some quiet diplomacy. But they chose megaphone diplomacy knowing full well it wouldn't work. They clearly don't want a resolution to the issue.
The "megaphone diplomacy" with the Michaels had not worked for the Canadians before the Chinese released them (really in exchange for Madam Huawei). I agree with you that loud negotiations do not work in the secretive society nation, but I cannot see how a WTA rep would be allowed near her now. I assume that that has been tried already. The government rep has previously suggested, they do not know what was going on and the following email was in insult to the intelligence of educated human beings. So, what is "clear" is quite questionable.

And to me this should not be political issue. If Simona Halep disappeared in Romania after making a similar statement the WTA would be concerned and make the same statement. So people trying to conflate this with something other than a missing Tennis Player are trying to deflect. I mean would people actually be coming on these boards if Simona disappeared and be like huh oh well thats the way it is in Romania. Lets get on with tennis.
I see your point. Romania. I honestly do not see how different that'd be if Simona had to deal with a similar issue. I'd still discuss it right here and anywhere were I could so that we'd learn about her well being.

Yes it is true that western countries do need to look at their own affairs as some of these western liberal democracies of late are starting to behave like the CCP, and that’s a bad thing, yet some think it’s a good thing, and that is a problem.
The CCP thing is a problem however. Capturing people and harvesting their organs which is mentioned from time to time is quite scary. You don’t want to get into trouble in China or have a low social credit score.

@Crocodile I am affraid our TTW powers may be receiving a share of requests from China to censor us here. I can tell you that that has happened before with other websites. We do really not know how hard this may be for our mods too. So, I do see their reasons behind deleting out posts or locking our threads in this case. As I am in China, I hope to read those forums and participate in debates regardless what they are. Thank you

"harvesting their organs"? Did you read too much misinformation from that cult Falung Gong?

The arrest of the VP of Huawei was seen by some as a de facto kidnapping, and now you see this as such too. We've gone down the rabbit hole!

The time gap between the Weibo post and the WTA threat to pull out of China was too short for serious diplomacy.
You don't know what they tried. You don't know all the avenues they attempted. You make assumptions on things you don't know. For all you know they may not have even responded at all. How long would you go if you get no response? A month? A year? I don't know. In the meantime she is somewhere.

LOL. Disband the Uighur internment camps and then come back and point fingers at American injustice…in that order. That’s nearly 2 million people being “re-educated.”

I laugh at all these people who are trying to equate this as America. When basically every international tennis player is tweeting out the same things. Oh look its Novak. Must be Serbia. Ok look its Lopez now Spain should mind their business. Oh I didn't even see Fabio. Italy must be in on it to.

You jokers need to get it through your thick skulls that the WTA's calling for independent verification of Peng's well-being isn't just directed at the CCP. They're called the Women's Tennis Association for a reason, and they've decided that in our current #MeToo climate whatever loss of business in China or retaliation from the Chinese apparatchiks is superseded by the potential backlash from their global fanbase - you know, the millions of people around the world who watch and support these woman athletes - should the organization fail to offer strong support in light of Peng's likely house arrest.

The WTA is making the right call, both morally and financially. Whether it is a politically astute move remains to be seen, but you lemmings love to regurgitate the chestnut that businesses have no obligation to wade into politics so what's the BFD about the WTA broadcasting their feminist bona fides?

It's cancel culture at work. They know if they are asked and don't give the politically correct response, they'll be cancelled. Everybody lies, as Dr Gregory House rightly states. And there is too much money at stake not to lie.

Oh now its international cancel culture. Novak and Fabio and Lopez and all of these guys are just worried about cancel culture. So its one big cabal of cancel culture is why international tennis players are concerned about this. Novak is a puppet, and Fabio is a puppet and they should just mind their own darn business and not comment on a missing tennis player. Sigh.

If you go against the prevailing consensus then you'll be de-platformed. A former Australian PM was invited to write a rebuttal of a critique of his views on China. The paper refused to publish it. It was too pro-China, apparently.

Every single post on the 5th page (except for NonP) is nearing utter incoherence.

what the f— does the US have to do with anything? What do various political ideologies matter right now? Why must we always, without fail, engage in whataboutism just to be argumentative?

How anyone can genuinely defend what is happening to Peng Shuai is beyond me. Is anyone actually of the opinion that the Chinese government has done the right thing here?

A prestigious broadsheet newspaper de-platformed a former Australian PM, just like that, and you quote these lightweights and their conformist opinions.
The prevailing consensus? You have no respect for anyone. You think everyone and everything is compromised to such an extent why do you even bother to watch this sport? Like what is the point of you watching tennis? To see them compete. If you don't think these players are genuine in their concern here why would you possibly think they are actually genuine out on the court? You don't believe them in this instance. But you think boy I like to watch those girls and guys play and give it their all. I mean if they are all just puppets of political correctness, why do you bother to watch the play and comment on their matches? If they are compromised in this area why not just say they are compromised in all areas including what they are doing on the court. And be done with being a tennis fan.

Whataboutism is only a valid criticism when engaged in properly philosophical debate. This is not such a debate.

Exactly I said this before. If this happened to Simona Halep in Romania people would or should be concerned about the same thing. If this happened to freaking Sofia Kenin in the USA people should be concerned.

You don't even think that is their opinions. You think they are doing what they have to do to make money. Thats how compromised you are claiming they are. A guy like Fabio just wants to go along to get along. Of course you dismiss the money he might be losing in China. Cause that doesnt fit your narrative.

I was expecting the PTPA to weigh in which it had to do if it wants to be taken seriously.

Scorecard on entities:

WTA with the most financially at stake is leading with the threat to pull out of China. (y)

Publicly in support of the WTA:
ATP
USTA
PTPA
ITF
Tennis Canada

MIA to date (to my knowledge)
FTF
LTA
Tennis Australia

All I see is rationalization from you. Its pathetic. Claims of knowing things you don't know. And then attempting to debate around that topic. Making excuses for players tweeting concerns calling them politically correct so they can make more money. Attempting to critique the WTAs reaction to this when you don't know dog crap about what they have tried to do. And not offering an opinion on what they should do other than they need to send in a diplomat and be quiet. Give me a break.

I've already said that I don't but you just don't read. I've been at great pains to point out that I disagree with the sort of law under which her arrest was made. But these laws are quite common and you are required to obey them.

Yes or no question - do you agree with the treatment of Peng Shuai by the Chinese government?

Should I read Adorno, Althusser, or Mao next in your opinion?

And the WTA has every right to respond in whatever way they see freaking fit. So quit trying to blame them for their response to this when you don't know Jack Squat about what they have been doing. If they pull out of China thats on them. If they view that as the proper thing to do, then thats on them. The Chinese have had every way to explain where she is. If they won't then the WTA and the ATP are going to respond.

The Chinese government, even if they did know her whereabouts, has no obligation to disclose them

And the main reason why there are doubts on what has happened to her is because of anti-Chinese propaganda disseminated by the US and their allies, hence why it is involved in this discussion
