Pete Sampras tips Roger Federer to win a ninth title at Wimbledon next month

The 14 time former grand slam winner believes the Swiss 20 time grand slam winner is the clear favourite to take home a ninth trophy in july, Sampras who won his
seventh and final Wimbledon trophy in July 2000 lost his record joint with William rendshaw in July 2017 when Federer won an unprecedented eighth trophy still believes even at almost 37 Federer can win 1 more Wimbledon title. The 36 year old has already won more gentleman's singles titles than any man in both the amateur and open era is the clear favourite to extend the record and win a ninth according to the 46 year old tennis great

Former seven time Wimbledon and 14 time Grand Slam champion Pete Sampras says only 3 players have a realistic chance of stopping Federer claiming a mammoth ninth mens singles title next month "Let's not get too ahead of ourselves too early. Federer is definitely one of the favourites for Wimbledon," the 46 year old American told British media."Roger is the clear favourite without a doubt. (Rafa) Nadal maybe hasn't played well at Wimbledon by his standards in recent years , but he's won it several times. He's definitely one of the candidates to win the title Novak is getting better and better and off course is – the only man to beat him twice at the All England Club – could be most likely a victor in SW19." Sampras also backed two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray, who returned from a 11 month injury layoff at Queen's Club but fell to a hard-fought defeat by Australian Nick Kyrgios, to make an impact if enters. Sampras said "Andy (Murray) and Novak if they can play well (can be contenders). they have dropped in the rankings, but Andy played really well against Nick and Marin Cilic who lost to Federer last year in the finals at Wimbledon is playing well ," added Sampras"He has a good shot selection on grass he was really unlucky last year in the finals to roger he had issues with a blister and his mind was not right , things can go in a good direction if he plays well at Wimbledon.Sampras said: ‘Well, you know, it’s hard to pick superlatives for him, because so many things have been said about him throughout the course of his career that he definitely deserves, you know, all the positives and all the compliments as a champion, on and off the court. Well he is almost 37 and he still keeps on inspiring everyone, showing that age is just a number and he keeps on going and, you know, playing some amazing tennis, really. ‘I mean, it’s not much to say. He is where he is because he deserves it so coming into Wimbledon, it’s his backyard, you know, it’s his court and it’s where he loves to play he has won it 8 times and been in 11 finals his achievements since 2003 there speak for themselves he is the greatest male player ever to play on a grass court, he has won 2 titles after the age of 30 no one has done that in open era, he has come close in losing to novak in the finals in 2014 and 2015 and losing in the semi finals in 2016 to raonic carrying a injury. he was so unlucky in 2008 and 2014 to novak and rafa in those fifth sets when he broke serve and had break points . Its amazing 15 years after his first Wimbledon crown we are still talking about him being favourite its unbelievable the longevity is unreal, if his game is on and he is in good health body wise I think he can still win and contend for titles at Wimbledon till 2020. he takes the clay season off rests his body and it works wonders, I think he can win 1 more title at Wimbledon at least i really do last year he played some of best tennis on grass I had seen him play for 8-10 years against against raonic and Berdych he was serving and volleying passing so well, winning at 35 almost 36 not dropping a set was incredible obviously he was not tested as much as maybe he should have been in final as Marin had some mental and physical issues but it was still a remarkable feat. ‘So he will be the man to beat there. He will be the first favourite.’ Sampras who won seven Wimbledon's in a 8 year span from 1993 through to 2000 and who was undefeated in finals was stunned by the sharpness of Roger Federer in the most crucial moments of the Mercedes Cup final to Raonic , particularly after taking an extended period of rest. I thought the most impressive thing was that he was sharp in the most important parts of the match, last year ‘I think he improved his serve and net shots on grass . I think his serve was better last year than in 2009 . I think his return was consistently better on grass in 2017 than 2007 and at 35 that was outstanding . Obviously he’s done things throughout his career better than anybody else, but to come back like that after not playing since Miami and serve and pass like that was great, Federer defeated marin Cilic in straight sets to win a historic eighth gentleman's singles trophy last July finally going clear of Pete Sampras and William Renshaw as the most successful male champion in Wimbledon history

Wimbledon 2018: Novak Djokovic tips Roger Federer to win a ninth title as he writes himself off

Novak Djokovic does not consider himself among the favourites at next month's Wimbledon and shares the popular view that defending champion Roger Federer is likely to win a record ninth trophy at the All England Club.

The Serbian, who is making a comeback from a long-term elbow injury, claimed his first victory over a top-10 opponent since last May at Queen's Club on Thursday as he thrashed Grigor Dimitrov to reach the quarter-finals.

The 12-times grand slam champion won the most recent of his three Wimbledon titles in 2015 and believes it is too soon to think about a fourth trophy at the elite tournament.

"Let's not get too ahead of ourselves too early. I'm definitely not one of the favourites for Wimbledon," Djokovic told British media.

"Roger is the clear favourite without a doubt. (Rafa) Nadal maybe hasn't played well at Wimbledon by his standards, but he's won it several times. He's definitely one of the candidates to win the title."

World number two Nadal, who last won the Wimbledon title in 2010, will enter All England Club without any competitive matches on grass this year after the Spaniard withdrew from the Fever-Tree Championships.

Djokovic also backed two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray, who returned from a year-long injury layoff at Queen's Club but fell to a hard-fought defeat by Australian Nick Kyrgios, to make an impact.

"Andy (Murray) and myself if we play well (can be contenders). We dropped in the rankings, but Andy played really well against Nick Kyrgios here," Djokovic added.

"He has home support, things can go in a good direction if he plays well at Wimbledon."

And once again we have a massively long and imaginary piece from the OP (without a source) although there is certainly an improvement in the English since the Agassi effort so I give some credit there.

Take with a pinch of salt people.

Always wondered though what makes Andre such an expert on Pete's tipping habits. Do they dine out a lot together or something? ;)

I seem to remember in his autobiography he said he was told this story by someone who'd valet parked for Pete?

It's long forgotten now but John Feinstein in his book "Hard Courts" (which included extensive interviews with Becker, Lendl, McEnroe and others) claimed that Agassi was loathed on tour - said that Gomez's win in FO 90 was greeted with joy by fellow pros because he had beaten Agassi. So maybe Andre was getting some revenge?
