Poly closest to YPTP in hybrid with gut mains

Question for those with experience in gut/poly hybrids. Which plays closest to poly tour pro but is silver in colour. Call me superficial, but the neon yellow just does not go well with any RF97 I have.

Have tried alu power/alu rough, rs lyon, element, 4G, cyclone tour - I still like the feel, pocketing and softness of poly tour pro plus I have the peace of mind I can string it as high as I like without at arm concerns.

I have two sets of WC silver string, but yet to string it as I find it wasteful to cut out gut. I am hoping it plays similar to YPTP unlike RS Lyon which I found surprisingly firm. Have you played with silver string?

I have reels of both silverstring and ptp and have used both as crosses with gut mains. I get better touch (feel) and perceived comfort with silverstring. I string them both very low though in a dense 18x20 (phantom 93 p); around 40lbs with gut around 50.

Thanks gvsbdisco! That sounds promising. I’m at 60/55 gut/yptp. I hope silver string feels good at around 55lbs.

In your opinion what about tension maintenance? Which one lasts longer?

Give tour bite soft a try. It’s shaped but I found it plays really close to poly tour pro and it’s silver.

I like the previous suggestion of Weiss Cannon Silver and I think Tourna Big Hitter Silver is great option as well. I have used both in gut / poly hybrids. The Weiss Cannon is softer and pockets the ball more than the Tourna.

I use the Weiss Cannon actually on its own or as a cross to soften Poly / Poly hybrids.

For me Tourna Big Hitter Silver is a better cross for gut as it plays firmer (Thus you can adjust its tension to control the guts power), it is more slippery for better spin, and it's tension maintenance is better than Weiss Cannon. The Tourna has the added benefit that it is Cheaper as you are already spending the money on the more expensive gut.

I’ve played with Silverstring and it’s fine.

My actual set-up is gut main at 24kg and Tourna Big Hitter Silver cross at 23kg. Been playing this for years and whatever marginal benefit there might be in tinkering with some other set-up isn’t worth the time or money to me. In terms of price and performance BHS is a great cross.

Based on my personal experience, I am not sure as I will cut out the crosses at 10 hrs or so and restring them. Based on what i have read on these forums over the years I believe YPTP gets the nod for tension maintenance.

I’m superficial in that regard as well. If you’re really looking for a silver string, I would go with the Silverstring as well. Comfortable is about the same, but just slightly crispier. Ball pocketing also similar.
That being said, have you considered using the graphite 1.25 YPTP? (I never tried the yellow one because of the aesthetics - and because the graphite was right there next to it)

Tourna big hitter seems a legit option. Thanks for the suggestions! Only quibble is that it doesn’t come thinner than 1.25mm. I do find the thinner the gauge the softer it is and more spin I get.

Not a fan of the graphite as it’s almost black. I have tried cyclone tour anthracite and even that seems too dark for me!

The yellow is more arm friendly and better feeling than the graphite which i didnt like at all

Thanks for the suggestions! I have done more research and come across Topspin Cyber Flash. With the 17L gauge it looks like one of the lowest stiffness ratings on TWU. Anyone have any experience or recommendations on this string? Only trouble is trying to get these string alternatives in Australia.

Your post made me try the yellow one today. It feels like a completely different string! Way easier on the arm, better ball pocketing while still feeling crisp, with great directional control. The graphite one is not really arm friendly - it has a kind of low frequency vibration which makes my arm hurt on kick/slice serves. It is also too crispy, bordering harsh territory. If I had to describe it comparing strings, it would be the 1st hour of Alu Power vs the 20th.
The playability compensates the weird look. I’ll play with it until it breaks and see how it goes.

has anyone compared YPTP with MSV CoFocus as a cross?

I can tell you that yptp is similar to luxilon.rough, slight texture to it, very good string, good tension maintenance and not annoyingly stiff
msv.cofocus is a round slick string, I would compare it to Wilson.revolve, or luxilon.alu.power, shape and slickness
ive played with yptp and strung and got feedback from ppl about msv.cofocus
so take my advise with a grain of salt (since I haven't played with msv.cofocus, yet),,

I didnt like the graphite at all, totally different string, the yellow 1.20 or 1.25 is far superior, glad you liked it
