Price of rat meat quadruples in Cambodia as inflation bites

The price of rat meat has quadrupled in Cambodia this year as inflation has put other meat beyond the reach of poor people, officials said on Wednesday.

With consumer price inflation at 37 percent according to the latest central bank estimate, demand has pushed a kilogram of rat meat up to around 5,000 riel (69 pence) from 1,200 riel last year.

Spicy field rat dishes with garlic thrown in have become particularly popular at a time when beef costs 20,000 riel a kg.

They should come to NYC, there's an endless supply here, they might even get paid for hunting them.......

I would take a nice young pigeon over rat anytime. Much easier to hunt, better taste, more nutritious, and an established culinary tradition too. There must be environmental imbalances in Cambodia causing pigeon shortages, if they have to resort to wasting garlic and other valuable resources on rat hunting/cooking.

This is appalling! The OP seems not at all genuinely concerned about the rising price of rat meat but rather seems to be mocking an alternative (dietary) lifestyle.

Boo hoo.

I don't remember hearing about the Native Americans eating rats and they had zero dollars for a thousand years.

Eating rats is kind of funny. Let's embrace that.

here is a couple of things i want to know before i place my order:

does rat have white and dark meat?
is the rat tail extra?
can i get my rat plain or extra hairy?

seriouly though, the idea of saying, "2 rat burgers, no pickles", does not seem like something i could bring myself to say

I guess the moral is that is very dificult to try to be funny without offending somebody. Political correctness and humor don't go along very well. Remind me of the Dentist in Seinfeld that convert to judaism just for the jokes :)

Rat can't be any worse (or better) than Squirrel or Possum??? I once heard an argument between some folks in Southern Arkansas discuss the merits of one vs the other.

I if I remember right squirrel won out as it was less "greasy"

Rats aren't exactly a clean animal. Look at its lifestyle. And yes, it's more funny than eating pigs. Are rats kept in pens? Dare I say it would only be funnier if they were. Horse meat is extremely lean, so it's not that funny, but rather kind of sad, because horses often connect emotionally with humans. Rats don't, to my knowledge.

Are you turning this into a cow meat vs. rat meat debate?

I never tried rat meat, but I wonder if it is just because I am close-minded. Pigeons also go after garbage/leftovers quite a bit, yet people in South China don’t have a problem with eating pigeons. The “drunken pigeon” (soaked in rice wine, I think) dish is a rather popular item on restaurant menus in Hongkong, and I thought it was good too. It is quite possible that garlic treatment makes rat meat palatable.

I heard when in Siberia some towns were going through tough times in the 90’s, people went after stray dogs. There were two issues – one was lack of food and the other was packs of stray dogs causing all kinds of problems (attacking small children, causing traffic jams, etc.) So in wintertime people of limited means would hunt down stray dogs and bake the meat and use bones as soup base.

Again, I wouldn’t go for a rat dish myself, but that’s just my close-minded prejudice mostly. I still don’t understand why they wouldn’t go after birds in Cambodia first. Do they still have birds there?

and pigs are?Pigs by FAR the most dirty animal I have ever had the luck to meet, and believe me I have seen many. And rats, aren't kept in pens because people just haven't tried it.Cows, pigs, sheep, etc weren't born to be kept in pens either. And haven't you eaten game?A lot of people eat it.

Why is it sad to eat horse, but funny to eat a rat and normal to eat a pig? A pig is much more clever than a horse and has a rich emotional world.

I am trying to understand some people's.."humour" here.

Oh,I think they have a lot of birds, they just like rats better.:)

You obviously haven't seen Ratatouille, it's based on a true story.

Hey malakas, how’s the summer closing in the tropical paradise??:) When you say pigeons are hard to find in Greece, are you talking about birds in the street, or the pigeon dishes on the restaurant menus? Also, I agree with you that pigs are very clever. The pigs with dirty lifestyles though are the ones domesticated by humans. The wild pigs (don’t remember the proper English word) are not dirty in their lifestyle at all, I don’t think….

I eat "game" on occasion. It's a rather vague term though, depends on the game.

Why is it sad to eat a horse? The horse-human connection is considered sacred in my country. I don't recall ever seeing The Rat Whisperer. It must have gone straight to VHS.

Rats are just foul. Yes, that's an opinion, just as thinking rat consumption is funny.

yes in restaurant menus!I have seen and ordered frog legs, snails, eels and bull's balls in normal restaurants but can't find pigeons for the love of god! No seriously!
It's not the lifestyle.Pigs have a very distinct odour that beats whatever a little rat can come up with.No wonder pig farmers are very rich, who would like to lose their hair, from washing 3 times every day to take the stink out?:/

the rat whisperer??That sounds like a thriller gone really bad. Those who own horses as pets have a very deep bond with them. But also those who have a couple of cows, have very deep bond with them, feel for the animal, and keep it till it's really old though it doens't make any more milk.

I don't know if I woul eat rat.A cambodian rat for sure not,but maybe if I really trusted the place and the hygiene I would try it..I still not see why it's funny.

There are not animals particularly made to be eaten by man.Prehistoric humen hunted down horses just like bisons and cows. It just happened that we found more benefitial and easy to take advantage of cows, who also can provide milk, than horses or rats.

Look up rats as pets on google. You would be surprised! I personally wouldn't eat them unless I was really really hungy, but there are much grosser cuisines (to the american culture) out there than rats. Have you ever eaten a hostess lemon pie ;)

I really don’t think wild pigs (“boars”?) smell bad at all. Even the domestic pig smell is not that bad, relatively speaking. I would personally much rather rather hang out at a pig farm than have to use a public bathroom at the Houston airport ever again.

I am sorry to hear about the pigeon situation in your country. Frog tastes like chicken, but snails are awesome if there is a French person around to cook them…?? ;)
