Protein Shake Help

Hi

I tried blending my first protein shake yesterday with frozen bananas, protein powder, skim milk. But it was very thick and bubbly(very small bubbles) sort of making it foamy.

What did I do wrong?

I also searched on recipes but many seemed so fattening, with the peanut butter, flaxseed oil and so on.

What ingredients do you use for a tasty and minimal calorie shake?

Why not use just the protein powder and eat a regular meal? You don't HAVE to blend in the other stuff if you don't want so many calories. If you want to gain some muscle mass, however, then putting in a bit of healthy, unsaturated fat could be a good thing.

I personally down a protein shake after a workout/in the morning and just eat my regular meal. I don't see it necessary to put more foods in the shake.

If I blend protein with milk then I make it before the workout and store it in the fridge and by the time I'm done it has settled down. Can't stand that frothy, air like texture of a fresh shake.

I usually throw a handful of oats and some honey in with vanilla whey protein and low fat milk. Really fills you up when you got nothing left in the tank.

Thanks for the input. I consume six meals a day of about 300 cals. I do eat regular meals but in small portions. For one, protein power alone (no matter which brand you are using), taste extremely horrendous. Therefore, i blend it with bananas to help with the taste. yes, i know that healthy foods aren't suppose to taste good, but i don' t want to come to a point that i feel like throwing it up, because my body will reject it once i try to down it some other time. It is also a waste of money and time taken fir the trouble. What one puts in the shake determinds whether it is fattening or not. I# d rather have the healthy fats from olives and nuts in my salads or snakes respectively and not a drink. I dont see how healthy fats can help you g!in muscle mass, i had always believe it to be the work or bcaas, proteins ib general. I am looking for a solution to make my shake less bubbly and what others put in their shakes

I've used a blend that worked great for me,...Banana flavored whey protein, and BCAA's (powder) mixed with chocolate milk (this was for post-work-out). Tasted GREAT, and provided that needed protein and glucose reserves. i used whole or 2% choc milk but i 'spose a person could go lower fat choc milk too.

Nut butters and seeds provide healthy fats. Yes, they are calorie dense but also an important nutrient for your body.

My shakes usually include whey, almond milk, greek yogurt, almond butter, and a banana....and are usually reserved for post workout meals. Strawberries work great in shakes, too, and you can even add spinach/kale and get some great nutrients (and you can't taste them in the finished product).

Do a search on protein shakes in this sub forum, many of us have shared recipes in the past.

Good Fat helps you gain muscle because they help you absorb nutrients (vitamin's / proteins). It is common to hear that you should cook veggies with light olive oil because the good fat helps you absorb the vitamin's. Not only that but it helps lymph circulation and a host of other benefits.

I usually make my shake with a fresh banana, 1 scoop of whey, and 1.5 cup of milk. The foam is natural when you blend it. Try blending at a lower speed or letting it settle for a minute before you drink it.

There are protein shakes that taste good . . . you just have to find the one you enjoy. Some protein makes me gag over and over (the ON chocolate / strawberry flavor i HATE). I like the flavor of syntha 6 so that is what I drink.

If you want it really tasty then make it a fruit smoothie. Add berries, banana, some OJ or yogurt, a little milk, and there you go. Or if you like it icy add ice. But as you say protein shakes aren't supposed to taste amazing. Mine taste alright but I just chug mine.

Good sources of fat = olive oil, nuts, natural peanut butter (this is a staple for many avid lifters), salmon, etc. Kind of nasty to put those things in your shake but to each his own. I make PB sandwiches.

Lastly the idea that healthy tastes bad is BS. It obviously won't be as good as eating a Big Mac and fries but nicely cooked chicken , steak , fish with a side of clean carbs like baked potato / sweet potato / brown rice . . . tastes good.

I was with you right up until the end. I'll agree that McDonald's fries are pretty tasty (even tastier in the old days when they used to use beef tallow in the fry cooking oil......damn vegetarian activists anyway)......but a Big Mac????? I'm not sure if I would allow my dog to eat whatever they put in that thing.

You need more milk in your shake....that simple

I use 2 cups milk, 1 scoop protein powder, 1/2 oats, 1 banana, 2tbp Peanut Butter, and ice cubes.

^^^^^^^ The perfect shake.

I mean it's all calories in calories out- and how much exercise u do. Why not eat a twinkie and beef jerky. Like this nutritionist did and lost 20+ lbs.

Believe it or not working / exercise / nutrition has more important benefits than looks. Sure many people can eat fast food and stay shredded but that doesn't help high blood pressure / heart problems down the road.

Beef jerky isn't bad for you aside from the high sodium. Its pure beef protein.

I still wouldn't get the nasty chemicals in the jerky in me. the E numbers especially.

thanks for helping me understand the healthy fats' benefits.

You didn't do anything wrong.
But stay away from skim milk.

I do the exact same thing because I hate that frothy airy texture of the shake.

i find that frozen bananas (or any frozen fruit) make it very thick, like, milkshake, eat with a spoon thick, yummy but not really a beverage.

try using half a frozen banana. if you don't want to add more milk to loosen it up you can add a little water depending on how it tastes.

i use 1 cup unsweetened soy milk, 1 scoop protein powder, a few ice cubes or half a cup of frozen fruit.

another one i really like is a cup of cooled black coffee, 1 scoop of protein powder, a soy milk and some ice.

How else can someone get 500 grams / day?

eaasy now lol. Some proteins are packed with fillers. Muscle milk requires 2 scoops for like 25g of protein.

And also it really isn't a "shake."

If you want a milkshake / smoothie than add fruits . . ..

if you want it to be a beverage than milk + protein . . . simple as that.
