Question about Agassi tantrum

Does anybody remember a match from the early 90s where Agassi pitched a fit over his racket? (I know I know, which time? but this was a specific instance).

He took his racket and stomped on it, pulled out another one and stomped on it, too without even using it, then pulled out another one and finished the match with it.

Anybody fill in the details of my hazy memory?

He did something exactly like what you're describing at the French Open. It was when he was experimenting with widebody frames. Don't remember the year, though.

Yeah, I remember that, it was the French open, I would say around 94. He snapped like three or four in a row like they were tooth picks. The frames were huge from what I remember. Cant remember if they were Donnay's or Head's. Anyone have any picks of this racquet?

Sounds like 1st round of the 1990 French...he was down a set and a break to the esteemed Canadian Martin Wostenholme...he had been using a widebody Donnay racquet during the clay court season that year...in danger of going down two sets to Wostenholme, he smashed one racquet by stomping it...went to his chair and proceeded to smash two more in the same fashion...i believe he went back to his previous Donnay at that point, and went on to win the match in 4

Actually, I think this was the first match he'd tried the new widebody from Donnay. His dad, Mike, had some input into the design. Agassi thought they looked OK and didn't even bother to bring his old frames with him to Europe. They didn't work out, per the description above, and he broke all of them. Agassi had his old frames overnighted to him in Paris that day.

I remember hearing about this, but why the hell would Agassi need a wide-body...even on clay? Was this before he had wrist surgery?

This thread is related to the Agassi Racquet Switch thread started during the Pavel match.

Later in the tournament wasn't that when he was using a POG with a Donnay "D" on it?

johnkid,

That's how I remembered it too. He was so successful with the POG. It took him a while to get back to form with the Donnay.

Actually, he went back to his trusty old Donnay, not the Prince. He had been using a POG before, and never told Donnay he didn't like the first racket they had built him. They were aghast. They fixed what was wrong with the frame and he loved it. According to some reports, so much that Head pretty much builds the same frame.

The widebody was designed during the widebody craze and Agassi's dad allegedly had a hand in the design. I guess Agassi felt obliged to use a racket his dad had helped engineer. In any event, it didn't work out for him. He went back to the frames that matched his outfit. :)
