Removing bumper guard

Looking at removing the bumper guard on my Tour Diablo MP. Am I right in assuming that the grommets are attached to the guard? And if so, can I go without grommets?

bump...

I'm about to take a knife to one of my old frames to test this out. Not having grommets seems like a bad thing to me though...

Without grommets the strings will break very, very easily. Even with poly. This is because the strings will be pressing against the sharp edge of the frame tube.

I've tried it so I know what I'm talking about.

Of course there can be workarounds, but I haven't the time to try them.

Don't believe that previous poster. The string will only press againt the sharp edge of the frame for a short while. Then they will cut through the frame.

I would not do that if I were you. Below I have listed all the good reasons you might want to do that.

Irvin, try that on the older 80's sticks, like the original Black Ace, and you'll know. This has just happened very recently to me.

As I said, "there are work arounds". I know that the strings can also cut through the frame, especially if the frame tube is thin, not near-solid like some sticks. And here I'm not talking about thin frame. I'm talking about "thin tube".
