Retro Roger calls for more serve and volley

Reading between the lines, he appears to be saying young players aren't being coached to be complete players i.e. learning the art of volleying. Perhaps this is why the next gen are struggling to break through; they aren't being taught the fundamental all round skill set. Not learning to volley also impacts your ability to hit a offensive slice (since you're not chip and charging.) so these baseline bots just use it as nothing more than a defensive shot.

Is Fedr correct, or is volleying obsolete and he's talking like a dinosaur?

It's obsolete. Not because it's useless, but because no millennial knows how to do it.

Well, most of the tour is baseline ball bashing, very few use the slice, even if well used is a great weapon, specially to move around an opponent and change tempo of a rally
If almost no slice is used, serve and volley is lost. When you see Zverev at the net, you want to cry - and he is the number 3 player in the world. Go figure

It'll be obsolete pretty soon -- M. Zverev will probably be the last serve and volleyer in tennis as we know it. There's little incentive to develop a net game, when younger players can just take the easier route and be a baseline grinder.

It is a subtle dig at Nadal.

Roger is insinuating that Nadal, as the best volleyer in the top 100, is shirking his duties and not passing on the craft to the next gen. I agree. It is criminal.

Tsitsipas often goes forward and volleys. He is one of the youngsters who can serve and volley. His father studied tennis in a university so he's got an encyclopaedia of tennis coaching him.

Tsitsipas can certainly go forward, but I wouldn't accuse him of being able to volley. He was awful at net in the match he lost last week.

Fed is by far the best allround player, but he is not an S&V (but could be,if he wanted though).

I love watching Matthew Edbden, not as a retro, nostalgic thing, but since this type of tennis is aesthetic, esp. compared to the mindless baseline bashing that seldom is.

His serves suck big currently. He is 6ft4 and has a worse serve than Berdych. In today game, especially for a 6ft4 player, he needs a Krajicek/Raonic/Kyrgios serve to serve and volley. He will want to play more weak putaways. In other words, he needs to develop a servebotting mode. I think he must hire a good serving coach immediately.
