Roger's 2018 Wimbledon is WimbleDONE

Full credit to Anderson, he has backed up his surprise final appearance at last year's US Open with another deep run in a major. He was the better player today and refused to let the occasion get to him.

Whether he can hold form for the rest of the tournament will be fascinating and a big IF. Playing at today's level, he is a legitimate contender.

For Federer's part, the scheduling on Court 1 was an adjustment, but a reasonable decision by AELTC. When they were making the decision, Nadal vs Del Potro and Djokovic vs Nishikori both seemed like better matches on paper and deserved to be showcased.

Will the loss here affect Federer's planning for the rest of the season? He may seek to try and recover lost ranking points by playing extra US Open series events. It's an option, but it comes with risk: overplaying in the leadup to last year's open was very costly.

He's got some thinking to do......

This is not an option he would even consider. He will play Cincy and the USO, then Laver Cup. He's not playing Montreal (has already telegraphed that) and sure won't be playing any 500 event like Washington. He doesn't care about ranking points, he just lost 1700 and his chance of finishing YE #1 are extremely slim at this point unless Nadal gets injured.

That was no ordinary loss either. It just feels that it’s coming to the end for Federer.

I didn’t think it would be out of the blue like this.
Agassi always has said, "when the end comes for an old tennis player, it comes abruptly, I can tell you that." And Fed is older than Andre was when he retired.

Fed was playing flawless tennis up until this match too. Had a little blip against Mannarino but was otherwise fine :(

You don't think he will play any more north american events this year than cincinnati, US open and the laver cup exhibition?

I also have the feeling that this is beginning of the end for Federer.

There's nothing he can do to improve his game anymore.

Big servers and consistent Counter Punchers can beat Federer if they are playing well and Federer is mediocre.

Another worrying aspect is long matches seems to take a toll on him and his ground game suffers onwards.

I'm sure that will slightly sting with Federer and not sure what he will do quite honestly.

it was sad to see Federer resort to pushing the ball in order to win...

would have been nice to see more varied tactics (i.e. standing further back to return, more net attacks, SABR?).

Actually winning instead of getting bummed in the arse from 2-0 and MP?
Jokes apart.
It was a sad loss. His game and forehand went down the drain totally.
I guess he was carrying too much pressure on himself to win and cracked. Court 1 Ajay added to the problem perhaps

Not happy with the all too believable reports of his game suddenly carastrophically failing after a fall, and for 4(5) more sets. Hinderer is a sad sight so I'm glad I was absent for much of it.

Yes. If your are a fed fan you would be better off not watching such matches.

Nadillio fans are gloating right now. Can't wait to see the cheat being taken out in the semis by joker. And that will be on Friday and I will have time and my dogs will be like. so will pummel massage girls like never before

If it takes 13-11 in the 5th set and playing the match of your life in order to bring down Grampa Federer, that doesn't bode well for 98% of the talents on the tour. Old or not, Federer is still going to make QFs and SFs in the coming Slams. And if he's a bit lucky with his draws, he's in a position to play more Slam finals.
I think Federer taking off so many weeks off between hardcourts and grass bit him in the rear this time. He wasn't mentally or physically fully prepared for a war like what Anderson brought today. Despite that, it still took Anderson 13-11 in the 5th set and saving a MP in order to survive the encounter.

Anderson used the junkballing from Federer as an invitation to really dictate play and never looked back.

So, do you think he might consider playing Roland Garros next year? He'll surely want a farewell there at some point.

As I said before, I never had a 37 year old as a favorite to win a slam event. I am not surprised by this result. As a fan, I am thankful that he sneaked in 3 more titles past the age of 35. It was a good run, Fed. 20 slam titles for a career is amazing. Thanks for the great tennis. It was fun while it lasted.

Then he wins the US Open...

I've never had the attitude of where I would pray for someone to lose just because I hate his fans. I think if not for Nadal, people would've gotten bored of Federer because he had no rival. And having no rival doesn't help anyone's legacy. The Fedal Slam race is the best thing that's happened to tennis in years. Otherwise who the hell cares about the sport if one guy is just winning everything against a bunch of guys who can't step up?

Honestly if he's feeling what a lot of us are feeling... that time is running out... he might want to play Roland Garros in 2019.

Many ruled him out 3-4 years ago (including us, Federer's fans), but he proved us wrong last year. However, at age 36 and very soon to be 37, it truly feels like this is a turning point in Fed's career, and not in a good way. However, Federer is Federer, and many thought that a man aged 35 couldn't ever win a major again. He's won 3 majors since turning 35. Surely, if there's anyone to hold back Father Time once again, it's Roger Federer.

Fed isn't done and he still gets all of that $300 million from Uniqlo irrespective of whether he plays past next year. He should play until 46 if he can, even if he doesn't win any more majors. Wouldn't tarnish his legacy one bit.

Federer really needs to stop skipping the entire clay season. He's delusional and arrogant if he thinks he can go on a 3 month vacation and then just come back and expect to be fully fit to win a Grand Slam. Not going to stay physically fit enough, strong enough nor sharp enough to handle the big bangers on grass after the first week of monkeys and clowns are brushed aside. First week form means nothing. It's the second week where the tournament really begins.

True. He can still make deep runs since the first week of Slams are absolutely garbage.

Well....I don't like Nadal too.
His time delaying tactics, bogus rhythm breaking routines and bogus injury timeouts all his career and what not.
So, it's not just the fans, the player himself is not someone whom I want in the final.

Would you prefer for nadal to make the final and then lose, or lose at the SF stage to Djokovic?

he never win another slam , forget about it,face it
I'm sure he'll win some more. He'll sneak in a few. It's not like he didn't have an MP today against world #6 ranked Kevin Anderson. It was a close match. 13-11 in the 5th set.
Losing to a nobody like Cecchinato in Roland Garros didn't end Djokovic's career. He moved on a week later and is now in the Wimbledon SF.
Federer will brush it off just like he did all those other Wimbledon losses (Tsonga, Nadal, Stakhovsky, Berdych, Djokovic, etc)

Ignore the incendiary headline that a Sydney Morning Herald sub editor has put on this great recollection of the Anderson Federer match. This was originally written by Oliver Brown as part of The Daily Telegraph Wimbledon coverage.

Really great read. I would have used the original Telegraph link but their version of the article page has now been revised to combine Oliver's piece with one of those "live tweeted" descriptions of the match and is now too messy to read as an individual article.
