Has anyone heard what players Russia is going to use against the US in the Davis Cup final? I'm hoping Davydenko plays singles and doubles. He's so hot right now...

Do mean hot in the media or his game?

Because the guy hasn't beeing doing well on the court, but I think Russia has a deep field of players to make the finals a little interesting.

I guess my sarcasm (and the Zoolander reference) was lost in the ether. Apparently he can't hit a serve in the court any more so that would be a nice advantage for the US team.

I'm guessing Youzny will be one singles player, but who is the other?

Andreev isn't too good on quick courts and Tursunov has been MIA the 2nd half of the year.

I haven't heard that. Wouldn't you think playing in Shanghai would be the best way to train for the Davis Cup? The dude hasn't played a match since the US Open, has he? Training is good but playing matches is still the best preparation.

I agree. However, between the good minds of P Mac, Connors, the Bryans, James Blake, they will decide what is the best preparation for Roddick to peak at DC, hopefully.

The courts are too quick for Andreev, but Tursunov had a good run on the Asia fall circuit and is a likely choice.

Report: Marat Safin may play for Russia in the Davis Cup final against United States

MOSCOW: Marat Safin may play for defending champion Russia in the Davis Cup final against the United States.

After losing in the first round of the Madrid Masters last week, the two-time Grand Slam champion said he was cutting short his season and would not play in the final in Portland, Oregon, starting Nov. 30.

But the ITAR-Tass news agency on Sunday said Russia captain Shamil Tarpischev had suggested a final decision was still to be taken.

"Right now, Safin is bothered with pain in his right wrist," Tarpischev was quoted as saying. "But if in two weeks there is no pain in his hand, Safin by all means will be included in the Russian team."

Safin has a 29-18 win-loss record in the Davis Cup and scored a decisive point in Russia's 3-2 win in the final against Argentina in Moscow last year. He skipped the semifinals against Germany in September.

Safin and Dmitry Tursunov paired at the Kremlin Cup earlier this month on Tarpischev's request to practice for the Davis Cup doubles match. The Russians won the Kremlin Cup title.

Tarpischev said there was nobody to substitute for Safin in the doubles.

"Only in this case (with Safin) Russia has a chance for a positive result," Tarpischev said.

He estimated the chances in the match as 65-to-35 in favor of the U.S.

Tarpischev said that the quick indoor hardcourt with a fast bounce required powerful baseline play and a difficult serve — which Safin and Tursunov have.

Fourth-ranked Nikolay Davydenko, Mikhail Youzhny and Igor Andreev are also on the Russian roster.

Andy Roddick, James Blake and the top-ranked doubles pairing of Bob and Mike Bryan are expected to play for the United States.

Russia beat the U.S.3-2 on clay in Moscow in last year's semifinals.

The four-player teams will be named 10 days before the match.

The Americans have won the Davis Cup title a record 31 times, but not since 1995, when Pete Sampras led the team to victory over Russia in Moscow.

Davydenko has been pretending that he can't serve recently. This is a tactic to catch the US by surprise, it will lull them into a false sense of security and then Davydenko will ace them into oblivion.

That old fox Tarpischev will pull a rabbit or two out of a hat yet (to mix metaphors). He convinced Tursanov to play doubles with Safin instead of the guy he was supposed to play with in Kremlin Cup and they won, thus sending a clear signal to the USA team. And what Shamil wants from his DC boys he usually gets. I would bet Marat will play doubles in the final.

I also bet (how fitting) that all of a sudden Davydenko's serve will miraculously become a lethal weapon.

Mega bucks/roubles for each of the boys for winning the Davis Cup
