Shoe sizing question

I searched and found many of the folks here when choosing shoe sizes, you choose the true shoe size, which means your toe is almost touching the very foremost inside the shoe.

However, all along, when buying shoes, I always buy a size bigger, leaving some room for my toes etc. e.g. from the tip of my toe to the foremost of the shoe I have 1.5 index fingers left. My jogging shoes, dress shoes, tennis shoes all fit me well this way. It haven't given me problems so far.

However, seeing many of you fit your shoe to your feet like gloves, I'm wondering whether I should try some smaller size ones that truely fits my feet and might improve my performance?

Get the size that you're comfortable with. I don't get tennis shoes that fit like a glove in length because I don't want my toes sliding into the front of the shoe every time I stop. I always leave about a thumbs width from by big toe to the front of the toebox. Tennis shoes need to be very comfortable, so choose what you're used to.

I think it's safer to err on the larger side, at least half a size. One time I bought a pair of shoes online that was half a size smaller, thinking that I might need a slightly more tightly fitting shoes. Bad move. By the end of the 1st set of my double match, my feet, especially my instep, felt like they were being folded. I had to ask another guy to sub in for me and I literally crawled off the court. I eventually got home, wearing no shoes and just my socks.

Rule of thumb for me is: If I am ordering American brand names (Nike, New Balance, Prince), I buy size 11 instead of my true size (dress shoe size) 10.5. If I buy European brand names, I order true size. For whatever reason, American manufactures believe men want to be larger than they are.

I also have to get size XL shirts in American brand names, even though I am a true size Large (my sportcoat is 44L).

Sizing is so confusing now, it almost makes so you can't buy clothing on the internet. There are no real standards.

****Note to American manufactures. I know I am not XL. After hours of thearapy, I have come to accept this.******

That is true. Nike's seem to run smaller while Adidas run larger or true to size. I wear an 8.5 in dress shoes. When I bought my Oscillates I had to buy a 9.5 size. I fit the BFII in an 8.5 while the BFIII in a 9.

oh wow what timing...i was just wondering about this..i'm a 9 in nike bf2 but i just got some 9.5 bf2, bf3 and cages and they seem like the extra room might be good...i have a thumbs width from my big toe to the end of the shoe in the 9.5...i wont know for sure how they are till i get on court and try to stop in them...i think the toe jamming actually depends on the shoe not the size...how the upper holds your foot i mean...

Whow! Previously when I select shoe sizing I was just choosing the shoe that fit me comfortably. It turns out, it really should be that way.

But one more question, isn't that every time you stop, yourr toes should be touching the foremost of the shoe to stop your feet, instead of just relying on the upper part of your feet (the part where the shoe lace part is stopping it)?

I've found all brands fit a little differently. I haven't worn anything but adidas barricades for a few years now and comfortably wear a size 12 although my street shoes are usually between an 11 to 11.5. If you are ordering online, I recommend going to a local store and trying on what you want to get the correct size. Exchanges online bite into the time frame of really wanting a new pair of shoes that you gotta have right now.
