Singles League in North Carolina (4.0)

I have a question for anyone that knows what is happening in the singles league in North Carolina. We have just locked up the Greensboro League.

I have been told that they are not doing a statewide championship, but more of a regional thing. I think we are to play the winner of the Winston-Salem League, but there are no scores posted for them. I also understand that different cities play this new league at different times.

What are other cities doing. How did your leagues turn out and were they successful or low turnout. I hope this experiment works out as I love this format for the summer for those of us that don't really like to play mixed (I just can't spend a match trying to blast the lady and having the ball hit away from me even if the proper doubles shot would be my way. That starts bad habits for me in other doubles matches.

hey john,

durham singles league doesn't start until mid-august. there are 4 teams @
my level. it would be nice if there's a "regional" thing, but i'm assuming that
our season isn't over until September. Raleigh singles league looks pretty deep into their season (someone i know played 5 matches so far).

I am not sure why some are during mixed doubles season and others are during combo season. I guess they are trying to find out which gets more turnout. I like it during the mixed season, although some of those 6pm matches can be pretty hot since they are trying to play most of them on hard courts. Maybe after the combo season during the Winter some of these winning teams can get together themselves and have a self run tournament at one of the indoor facilities like the one in Greensboro and create a mythical camp during the down season for most.

I think there are only two 4.0 teams in the entire Downeast. We really haven't seen a lot of interest in the Singles leagues. I myself didn't sign up because I didn't think they would make. Plus with the number of tournaments in July and August, I've been busy with those.

Durham singles league is just starting.

Raleigh's Fall singles league will also be starting soon.

In Durham, we've been told the Cary, Raleigh and Durham coordinators are trying to put together an area championship weekend to happen after the Durham season ends.

If you guys in the Cary, Raleigh and Durham are not too scared, we may be interested in joining in. On a side note. I just got an email from the league coordinator that there is now going to be a playoff between the 1st and 2nd place finishers, so we have not actually won anything yet and will back off so as not to count any chickens before they hatch. Since there is no state wide championship, that is surely fine with us as long as it does not mess with the start of combo season or our players that are going to states in mixed. However, they did not have that set up earlier.

In the regular 4.0 season, we finished in 2nd place in a field of around 14 teams. We only lost by tie-breaker. It would have been nice to have a play-off of 1 and 2 for that season. Oh well.

Darkblue: Good to hear from you. I did not see you in the last Greensboro NTRP. Hope to see you in August. If it is not too hot, I may play in both doubles and singles draws. However, I have a goal now of winning each doubles draws I play in this year with a different doubles partner each tournament. 3 for 3 so far after coming back from my latest shoulder surgery.

You should really push for it in Charlotte. It is great and I would even like to see it a 5 vs 5 rather than 3 vs 3. For those who like singles or don't really like mixed, it is a great thing for the summer.
