Skipping Top but not Bottom

I recently learned how to string within the last 2 months or so. I always see the 7T 8B so on and so forth but never really understood it until yesterday.

I helped strung a friend’s Graphene Prestige XT MP 18x20. When I finished, one of the outer mains look kind of weird (slightly diagonal then straight down). So my friend looked up the specs and saw that it was 7T and 8B meaning that I was supposed to skip the 7th hole and the top and 8th hole at the bottom .

When I was learning instruction on YT, they say the rule of thumb is if you skip on top, you have to skip at the bottom simultaneously . My question is even if I had screwed up and one of the mains came out looking strange, it is still 18x20, is it going to have any structural damage to the racket if I play with it? I hate cutting/wasting strings

I would redo it. There is no damage to the frame, but you have to have pride in your results. Your friend may show your job to another player who may, probably will, notice this. Rule of thumb is not the same as always. If you do the same frames multiple times, you learn to see the direction of the hole/tube. If unsure, look up the stringing instructions, which you did..or your friend did.

Frequently the skipped holes on the bottom will be the same as the skip holes on the top. But not always.
There are rackets that skip 7&9 on top and 8 on bottom, or 8&10 on top and 9 on bottom, or 9 on top and 8&10 on bottom. There’s even that old Head that skipped 8 on top and 8&9 on bottom.

Not saying that’s not true but my instinct tells me either that was a misprint of you copied it wrong. Most 18 main rackets skip either 8&10 or 9 whether you’re talking about the top of bottom of the frame. Most 16 main rackets skip either 7&9 or 8 whether you’re talking about the top or bottom of the frame.

That’s true for >99% of all rackets.

If your last main was a little diagonal, then 1 of your bottom crosses shouldn't look right either. I'd redo it also. It's a cheap learning experience--1 you probably won't forget.

The hole-designer-in-chief at Head will mostly disagree and tell you that be prepared for anything!

You are right, not always. Fan shaped Head frames are notorious.
Sometimes you skip one in throat but 2 at the top.
There are also head frames where it gets extreme.

I don't play with head frame given their odd shape.
But stringing those Head frame require caution first time doing it.

Some Dunlop frames are skip 7 & 9 at top, but skip 8 at bottom.

That's exactly what I thought back when this thread began.

Many 18x20 Prestige frames skip 8H,10H & 9T.
For that matter, the exact same configuration is found on many 18x20 Radicals, as well as some 18x20 Dunlop frames.

Some frames you don’t skip the same hole top and bottom like Angell TC95 and 97 is skip 8 and 10 top but 9 bottom. Your first clue should be that the main string is coming out diagonal instead of straight.

You should redo that frame per the instructions
