Sloane Stephens Practice Session

Thanks for the vid.

Not sure she comes across well in it. Was she tired? Seems to not have the heart for it and appeared to miss the target (cans in the ad court) all the time...

Serious lack of intensity, maybe its just a bit of a warm down drill at end of practice or something.

 Yea that's it, the 12th best female player in the world lacks intensity and heart.

Good God, Listen to yourselves. Are you guys serious? She is obviously working on a particular shot. This is called practice for a reason. You practice it because you have not yet accomplished it. As far as the missing the cans comment. There is not a player in the world who can hit those cans with any consistently. This is not archery.

Hmmm....

Simply commenting on the video, not on her career. She's a great athlete of course.

Anyway, I did ask if she was tired. As someone else said, it could also be a warm down drill, who knows.

Thanks to the OP for posting.

I just find it interesting how people come up with their own interpretation of things and speculate as to the reason why it does not meet their expectations.

To me this looks like a typical practice session. She does not look tired at all. She is working on a shot. Why would she need to look intense?

Yeah I think it was a warmdown exercise since it was near the end of her practice

I am 100% serious.
I said the drill has a lack of intensity.
The drill does lack in intensity.
I thought it might be a warm down drill at the end of a session.
Max confirmed this may be the case as it was near the end of her practice.

To you it looks like a typical practice session but to a knowledgeable tennis coach/player it is far from that.

Lighten up, Francis. Every player is a little different with their intensity level in practice.

Which part of 'near the end of the practice' did you fail to comprehend? She may have already done that drill for an hour - or 3 - before our fellow poster showed up.

I don't know why some are surprised, watch some match footage and you'll notice she is not that intense as others. Sloane is one of the "laziest" players out there. Not saying it's a good or a bad thing but it seems like that's her on court personality - very calm and composed, almost too calm. Her main weakness ATM is the backhand though. Maybe more intensity, better footwork could make it less of a liability... but they probably know this, as we see here this is a backhand practice basically.

The best practice is when you are relaxed and comfortable. That's how you groove efficiency.

Can we judge a player's personal and work habits with ONE video?
Obviously, she has worked on her game to get to solid WTA level. Whether she enjoyed the work or not is a moot point. She did the work.
You don't have to enjoy and have fun during practice sessions, and certainly don't have to enjoy or have fun on EVERY practice session.
Some are designed to occur when you are tired, slightly injured, distracted, or bored, but you attend them the same to improve your game.

"confirmed this may be the case".
You can't confirm a possibility.

I think you guys should get together and offer to coach Sloane. She is obviously lazy and lacking the intensity and heart of a champion. 19 and almost top 10. Those coaches are screwing her up! You and ForehandReverb should show them how it's done!

I said there was a lack of intensity in the drill. There is a lack of intensity in the drill (Perhaps you do not have enough experience with high level tennis to see this). I am correct.

I thought it might be a warm down drill or maybe at the end of a session. Max said he thinks I may be right as he said it was near the end of her session. I am correct again.

I cant confirm a possiblity. Thanks, must remember that in future!

For the 1425th time I said she is not one of the most intense WTA players, quite the opposite, hence a training session like this shouldn't come like a surprise.

This thread had a lot more posts that got deleted (why?) and I've explained myself in one or two of those posts. Can't be bother to do it again. Most people understand what I meant anyway. Probably even mrnoital but he just likes to assume things and take everything literally. I'd say you better use this anger, energy or whatever it is on other things.

The drill itself is incapable of possessing intensity so you are referring to the participants.

Yes, you are correct that Max confirmed that you may be correct. So you are guessing and Max is confirming that you are guessing. Great!

Wrong there buddy. That drill can be done with intensity. I know you dont have a huge knowledge of the game but coaches and anyone with a good knowledge of tennis will know it can be done.

I see, forgot he takes everything literally.
I interpreted what you said the only way it can be interpreted. There is no other way in which to take it. It is the participants who determine the intensity or lack there of. In other words you were indeed calling into question Sloan's lack of intensity from the beginning.

Still my point stands. She displays a serious lack of intensity in this drill.
 You just insisted over and over that the drill and not Sloan lacked intensity and now you finally admit what you meant. Thank you.

Having originally posted "serious lack of intensity" and then that "there was a serious lack of intensity in the drill". The majority of intelligent people will understand that I am referring to Sloane and her intensity levels throughout the drill and that I am not actually referring to the intensity levels of the drill itself. But not everyone is intelligent so it is tough for some.

We cannot bring the same "intensity" into every hitting session.
As humans, we have up days, down days, interested days, and distracted days.
How did she get to be top 20 in WTA? She must have done some useful practice sometime in her past.
