People say that if Murray wins a slam a lot of British will start playing the game which will potentially pave the way for more British champions. People say that something like a million rackets were bought in China when Li Na won so a similar thing will actually happen over there.

If a kid is old enough to watch tennis on TV and understand what is happening on the screen (and thus be inspired by it), he/she is roughly 4 years too old to start training to be a tennis star.

You need to start holding a swinging away from the age of 1.5 years.

it's not the future tennis players that will be buying the rackets, it will be the parents of the future tennis players who will be buying them for their children in the hopes that their kid will be able to do the same as their nation's hero.

....This is very pessimistic. The point is it will get people interested the sport which will lead to further generations. It's kind of not surprising that tennis countries dominate after one or two good players emerge and become more involved.

A good example is Sweden. Bjorn Borg rose up as a huge talent and started to dominate the sport, suddenly Sweden became a powerhouse for tennis and paved the way for future swedes such as Wilander, Edberg, Järryd etc.

It doesn't always work but it usually happens. I'm sure if Andy Murray started to win majors and dominate the tour a lot more British people would be into playing tennis again. I think just alone since Andy Murray's rise you have seen a few more rising British stars.
