String slipping in the gripper

I've been having the same problem when stringing almost all polys: the string slips in the string gripper.

I cleaned it out many times using a alcohol-soaked cloth but it still slips.
It's a Plus 8000, and it doesn't have a gripping pressure regulation as far as I know.

What can I do?? Is sandpapering the inside of the gripper a good idea?

Sanding is a poor idea. Try cleaning with non-acetone polish remover. Alcohol does not remove polyurethane easily. If there is a PU build-up, the non-acetone remover should desolve it for you. If that doesn't work and you insist on using something rougher, try a copper bristled brush and use it gently.

But I don't think the slipping is caused by reisdue in the gripper, because the string was slipping ever since the second racquet I strung on the machine...

I had the top cross missed by a Pro shop stringer on my Prince TT Scream and it played close to the best it has ever played!!! (Looked weird though.....kinda naked)

If you have access to Canadian Tire money, use that in the gripper, and it should solve the problem. (Canadian Tire is a store in Canada that gives out paper 'money' - 5, 10, 25 cents, etc. - which can be used in a future purchase.)

Maybe your country's real money would work, too - wherever you live.

I'd try it with a small bill, though.

I've never had a string slip in my linear gripper (Gamma X-ST). On my stringer, the gripper works by sliding in a slot that gets progressively narrower towards the racquet-side of the stringer. This increases the gripper clamping force the more forward it moves. If the gripper plates aren't sliding easily, they might not be able to generate enough clamping pressure to hold the string, to make sure that surface is clean also.

Had a similar problem with Wise linear gripper. If your's is linear type, you may need to change the ball size that the plates slide on. A larger ball will push the plates closer together and will reduce slippage.

Shooter, what kind of machine do you have? Most machines have an adjustment for the gripper. Have you tried adjusting that?

I have a revo 4000. I adjusted it, but whenever I try to position the string in there, as soon as I pull back and activate the gripper it slides out (if that makes any sense at all).

Have you had this problem before? Or did it just start recently? You may or may not know....but you have to hold some tension in the string with your hand as you begin to tension so that the string won't slip out. Once you get a few pounds of tension on the string and it takes the slack out, the tension will hold the grippers in and keep the string from slipping out. If this isn't the problem, then I hope I didn't offend you.....

yeah, thats what I do, I pull the string back so that the gripper tightens before I tension it...thats where the problem is happening, as soon as I pull back to engage the gripper the string slides out. I never had this problem before. I guess I'll brush it more and try again.

Try pulling the string down after it goes through the gripper. then hold it down while you turn the crank.

Slip a dollar bill inside the gripper - that should hold the string.

The linear string gripper on my Flex 940 also slips from time to time. A thorough cleaning with a toothbrush and nail polish remover works well. But, I would also be interested to see how to repack larger ball bearing to replace the original. Thanks.
