Tendonitis (Foot)

My fiancee has recently been diagnosed with tendonitis in her right foot (there is swelling on the top middle/right, she is lefty, pain when serving, backhands).

Has anyone ever experienced this before? We used to play about 1-1.5 hours a day, 4-6 days a week. The doctor told her she should cut back, and do things like the eliptical, exercise bike, and other exercises which would not aggravate the injury as much as tennis.

She wants to keep playing, but to cut it down to one or two nights a week, perhaps for an hour or so, avoiding serving. Would this be inadvisable?

Is there any accepted amount of time which should allow this injury to recover? Apart from Motrin, rest, ice, etc. is there any other way to hasten the recovery?

Thanks for any help, I'm a bit saddened as I will now only have tennis once a week! Sigh.

Custom orthotics can really help. They'll take the pressure off the sore areas. Also no high heels, flip flops, (or anything that puts additional stress on the foot) until the injury is better. There's also a lot of Pilates based foot exercises if you do an Internet search that may help. Good luck!
