Tennis in Winter??

Alright, I'm in highschool and i REALLY want to make the varsity team this year (JV SUCKS, its not as competitive as varsity), but in order to be on varsity at my school you have to be uber good. The only problem for me is, when winter comes, theres snow on the court, meaning i cant practice. Is there anything else i can do? Theres an indoor court about 10 miles away from where i live, but the winter lessons there cost $168 for 6 two hour lessons. Or, just $20 for about 2 hours courttime. I'm not exactly rich nor is my family so...what can i do??

Winter is one of the realities of life. Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do but shell out the dough for indoor play. If you are as ambitious as you sound, then why not get a part-time job on the side at a fast food joint or equilavent?

I'm not saying play everyday at these indoor courts, but don't let your game deteriorate over the winter months. Do some shadow tennis strokes in front of the mirror. Watch tennis matches on tv and on tape. Buy some books on tennis or check out your local library for some tennis books - learn from them.

Being from Canada, I can emphathize in your situation; but we really don't have to be complacent about it. Keep in shape in other ways: ice hockey, indoor tracks, cross country skiing, etc. etc.

Good luck yodudedudeyo!

$20 for 2 hours of court time is actually pretty good
go with a friend, or 3 if its doubles, and itll cost you 10 bucks at the most.

I dont think you need $168 lessons unless you really need help on your technique, and if you do, call up one of those uber good varisty players and ask them if they want to play a match, you learn a lot when youre getting smoked

It is extremely good, as well as the lesson rates; around my area it's more like twenty dollars an hour for court time. Get a partner and split it up. A job would help like raftermania said. You could stay at the same level you are by playing two times a week. So if you have the money to do that, work hard in the fall and maintain that level. If you want (and financially can) play more, then you can keep improving during the winter. Tennis is an expensive sport, not much you can do.

$20 for 2 hours is excellent! I Manhattan, NY, courts are easily $70 an hour at prime times (indoor)...so consider yourself lucky.

However, for a high schooler, $20 can be expensive, and if you absolutely can't afford it, I would say go to the school gym or a racquetball court (cheaper than tennis courts) and hit at a wall...not the same as being on a court, but it will keep your timing ready for when you do hit the courts.
