Tennis Lessons--How Often?

I am a beginner adult and just started private lessons. I am taking a 1hr lesson a week. How often do you guys suggest lessons? I really want to improve and I am considering bumping up to 2 times per week, until I have some things to practice. We are working on swing mechanics now, and I really need the guidance as I don't want to form bad habits. This makes it hard to practice on my own.

I recommend you play as much as possible -- not necessarily with a coach, rather with anyone willing to hit. While not playing outside of lessons may prevent you from developing bad habits, it also prevents you from working on the various mechanics of each shot. In other words, you could slow your development as a player. Further, it's the coaches job to fix any bad habits you might develop. So get out there and play as much as you can :).

FWIW, I do one private lesson a week. That is plenty. If anything, I wish I had more time and better conditions for practice.

There is one thing I used to do that was helpful. I used to do the private lesson and also do a 3-and-a-pro 90-minute clinic. That gave me practice hitting "real world" balls from my lesson mates (who were not at all shy about aiming for my head at the net) as well as hitting working on doubles skills like passing shots and positioning. Best of all, my pro got to see the kind of errors I make outside of a lesson, so he would then structure future lessons to address these deficiencies.

So if you can grab a couple of buddies and do a regular clinic, that might work nicely.

Take lessons and also join clinics to practice what you learned at the lesson. Thats an inexpensive way to hit alot a balls and learn to hit your shots on the move as a good clinic will keep you moving and give you some instruction. You can also meet someone at the clinic and have a hitting partner.
