Tension is lower when using a starting clamp bridge...

The bridge-construction does not change the tension. Might be that you can remove less slack with a short piece of string.
Normally I use a pro-knot, but when the string is short I have to use a double half hitch

What string do you have in the starting clamp's eyelets? Try Kevlar if you haven't.

My bridge string is a 17g soft multi-filament.

I use this for all type of short strings, multi, synthetic gut, natural gut and even poly.

So if the short string is a poly (16g) and the bridge string is a 17g multi,
are you perhaps implying that the poly maybe under-tensioned?

Maybe I am just losing my feel.
If I deflect the last two mains (I string 2 piece), I notice a slight tension differential.
The sound pitch is also different, but only slightly.

I think it is Ok.

At any rate, I don't normally hit on the last 3 (x2) outside mains (16x??).

Thank you all for your responses.
