I just feel uncomfortable about the whole thing. Is this the first time in the history of the Academy awards that something like this has happened? The whole thing is just yuk. Is this the best we can do right now?

Just watching the clip back, I just have to admire the absolute class of Chris Rock. OK, maybe he shouldn't have made that comment in the first place, but he didn't resort to hitting him back or insulting him back which would have made the whole situation worse. He comes out of this a lot better than Will Smith

I thought the criteria of a host is someone who has a reasonably command of spoken English?
I suppose if YOU had good command of spoken English you'd have known that it's either "criteria of a host ARE" or "CRITERION of a host is," and lets not forget "reasonable command"

A joke is not a comment and the AAs are supposed to be entertaining. Chris Rock is also not exactly Ricky Gervais, who is currently circulating his joke on alopecia.

And spare a thought for Timothee Chalamet whose one remaining chest hair keeled over and died as Will rocked Chris!

Academy Awards has become something of a wokeness festival and awards are largely predictable based on the degree of wokeness of the nominees.
It was a bit predictable as well (in terms of its slant on who would win the awards) in the past. This was mostly due to the composition of the academy members and who had the most "power." The composition of the members has slowly, but steadily changed.

Interesting how the word 'woke' has been a bit weaponized by both the left and right. Quite a few just generalizing and labeling anything the view as "progressive" as "woke."

If the 1956 U.S. Supreme Court debate on whether Montgomery's segregation laws on buses were unconstitutional was happening today, a bunch of people would probably be complaining about wokeness and how segregation is how it's always been and is fine.

Hey, every 35 years a deaf actor wins Oscar. Before that, it was another 25 years when The Miracle Worker addressed the subject of deafness/blindness and Anne Bancroft won Oscar for helping a deaf/blind cultural icon. I don’t say that lightly either. I lived in Port Washington for several years and saw the amount of visitors to her foundation.

I hope that isn’t considered being “woke” to address with that frequency a problem affecting every eighth person (deaf) and every seventh (visually impaired) person in the country.

The CODA peeps were the ones hurt the most by Will Smith’s loss of control. Kanye West syndrome strikes again! Take the attention away from what was rightfully earned to dwell on what’s crossing the line in terms of social etiquette.

As a bona fide sports junkie, I was always in admiration that Jim Plunkett won a Rose Bowl, won the Heisman, graduated from Stanford, was #1 overall pick, won 2 SBs and did it as a son of two legally blind parents. There had to be a lot of love in that household and a lot of perspective gained from all the extra effort necessary just to survive without a very important sense.

An insult can be responded to in kind, the way Smith did anyway from his seat after smacking Rock. He probably just felt extremely entitled to be able to do what he did. But what to make of the people who justify it under the pretexts "words are violence"? Because if you really believe that, if you really believe it is OK for an actor you walk on stage and slap the emcee for talking smack (which by the way is the emcee's mandate now), boy you couldn't pay me a million bucks for me to, ahem, enjoy the pleasure of your company. I wouldn't want to be anywhere near anyone that demented.

The Awards are just a popularity contest decided for all sorts of reasons by members of an industry. If these reasons now include diversity that's a gain.

We live in a time of extreme, extreme hypocrisy where we pretend to be super edgy and egg entertainers to cross lines once held to be sacrosanct and then react in horror like shrinking violets to show the world how sensitive they are. And why do the comedians endure this humiliation? To quote Peter Gabriel, "Money, honey, neon neon".

I asked on Twitter to a jerk who claimed Rock got what he deserved what his sentence would have been to properly punish Michael Richards, a rant that truly was repugnant to a whole race of peeps. Should he get 40 lashes???

I guess one way of pulling the ratings out of the toilet is to televise a mental breakdown live.
It took great restraint for Chris Rock not to say: "Maybe you ought to have slapped the men that were banging your wife."
Hitting comedians for jokes is not good. It is very bad for free speech. She has alopecia, which is not a life threatening disease(it isn't like Rock joked about her having cancer).

It looked a rather calculated act. Calculated to impress his wife: usual male protector vibe regardless of the wife's infidelity.

The fact that they are supposed to be now in an open marriage makes him look even more stupid.

This incident reminds moi of the Hit-for-Haiti-gate between Pete and Dre several years back. For those in the dark:

Strictly speaking Dre was in the wrong, but if Pete took that much offense he should've waited till after the match to talk to his old frenemy in private. Instead the whole thing became awfully uncomfortable to watch when it should've been a feel-good event for all involved.

I don't blame Pete and Will for overreacting, though. Sometimes you just can't help it, and when it does happen you apologize for the flare-up and move on.

Also:

Exactly. Jada didn't seem that pissed herself, but obviously Will thought she did and reacted accordingly.

Hair loss is particularly painful for women. Not a stretch to think Will felt a visceral need to protect his wifey.
If it was that visceral would his reaction have been instantaneous. There seemed to be a time lag between Rock's comment and Smith remembering he was a vessel of love.

I’m hoping CODA makers have a shrewd lawyer that can devise a winning strategy in court to snag some of Will Smith’s fortune for his impact on ticket sales. Or, in lieu of financial damages, do a remake of Anger Management with a Will Smith character in place of Adam Sandler’s Dave Buznik. Then he can get some much needed therapy from a Jack Nicholson type to get centered and start feeling groovy while holding up traffic on the Queensborough Bridge:

who understands getting "triggered" better than OJ?

This just in, in case you were straddling the fence on Stale Prince’s behavior…OJ has weighed in on another stupid Sunday night in LA and he says Will was wrong but he understood how he might have gotten triggered.
OJ should do an instructional video, Andy Roddick style, to explain how such situations should be handled. Sponsored by Ford, of course.

AMPAS, those wonderful galoots that brings us The Oscars every year, has admitted they did not handle the Will Smith chaos properly but insist they asked the petulant man-child to vacate the premises after his violent tantrum but before he would have the opportunity to step onstage a second time IF he won Best Actor.

I have emphasized the two-letter Kipling “I” word because:

1. How toothless is the security service provided by AMPAS IF they really asked Smith to leave and he declined???

2. Did AMPAS folks know the results (against stated policy) of the Best Actor voting ahead of time and then attempted to do their best imitation of Spider dancing for Tommy DeVito in Goodfellas but failed in the end because Smith refused to apologize to Rock onstage?

The AMPAS board meets in mid-April to consider what sanctions they will impose on Stale Prince. He could be expelled but I’m not sure if that has any punitive effect. Does anyone really care who Smith votes for in the future?

Meanwhile, the one adult in this whole mess, the guy who didn’t escalate matters by swinging back when a grown man assaulted him, has remained above the fray a bit by saying in his first public performance at a gig in Boston that he is still “processing” the whole rigmarole.

Reveals a lot, doesn't it? I think you nailed it. They knew the results and never intended to enforce anything.

The "Kipling I" is a classy touch. <3

Between letting an Oscar winner accept his award and having him dragged out of the auditorium, they chose the least worst option.

Given that he struck someone, swore, and refused to leave the premises then the retraction of the award and a five year ban seems to be a minimum punishment.

Hopefully they will give the award to the actor with the second highest votes.
