The Age Old Question About High School Tennis

Does High school tennis matter for anything? in other words do coaches look at it at all? every single person i talk to claims they get worse during high school season including myself. Why do you think this is?

We have come across some college coaches who are interested in high school team participation; no matter how good you are, and how horrible the HS team, it shows you are a "team player" :)

I do get worse playing for my high skool, its not that the practices r crappy or the players r crappy, its the coach. She takes all the progress iv made with my private coach and says "THATS WRONG, DO IT THIS WAY!!!" Its really a pain cause if i dont listen she will cut me, wen i go to my private coach after the seasons done he has to re-teach my stroke and get it bak in chek... It doesnt tak long to find the groove again but it is jus so annoying!

yes, high school tennis makes me worse. i came in the spring season with a killer serve and a killer net play... now my net play is gone, and my serve-dominance is waning...

right on. here are a couple of other factors:

-if your on a team that consistantly does well (top 3) in your state championships
- if you are on a high position on that team that consistantly does well
-if you are a captain- shows leadership qualities
-and obviously if you do well at your state championships

We won the georgia 5A(the biggest class) state championship in Georgia 3 years in a row and have a shot at a fourth and even the local state college coaches did not even know the name of our school or that we had won the state 3 time in a row, we had 2 D1 comitments last year and 3 this year and they still don't know our school.

Keep spelling like that and you won't have to worry about making it to a college anyway.

HS tennis makes me worse too. In fact, it makes everyone on our team worse who actually takes tennis seriously.

I HATE HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS. COACH ONLY PAYS ATTENTION TO THE TOP PLAYERS, OR WE ARE DOIN DUMB MATCHPLAY.

I ALWAYS TRY TO DO SOME DRILLS BY MY OWN, BUT THERE ARN'T ENOUGH TENNIS COURTS....

i think im gonna ditch some school practices for my private coach's practices....

HS Tennis is NOT "lessons". I'm a HS Coach and I tell my boys and parents the team practices are for competitors to refine their games and prepare for matches.

I teach lessons in the off-season. Maybe your coaches do, too.

Don't "ditch". Work out a schedule with your Coach and your TP ... or just quit the team and save everyone the hassle.

er, may i clarify? (sorry for my tirade KK :():

i really did NOT mean "ditch".... in fact, i happened to do what you suggested me to do last year.

last year, we had the same problem & hassle. though, when i got really desperate, i decided to start splitting my time between my private coach and my school coach.

me and my coach and my private coach worked the schedule out.

in the end, i still lost nearly every single one of my game, but, i geuss, i learned a valuable lesson that now is coming back to haunt me (it's nerves: it's league season and i shake it off the best i can):

in a tennis match, NEVER hold things back. give your game and opponenet all you got.

i apologize if i offended you KK... i really sincerely am.

just please make sure you involve every person well.

thanks, a_2c+

er, what if you ask both of your coaches to compromise for the schedule? even though i did go to private practice during team practice days, i made sure i was not letting my team down (and to be honest, i didn't "ditch" that often) by going to team practices days BEFORE the game...

i'm just sayin what i did last year. i'm not even that good anyways.... won't really matter. i'm just gonna play club tennis @ college...

I would hate to be a high school coach for this reason...it sounds like a no win situation for them sometimes...

wow you guys have some really bad coaches. My coach is strict, but he's reasonable and funny at times :)

I'm #1 at my school and I still am not allowed to miss even one practice unless I am at a tournament. WHAT SHOULD I DO? I am trapped. At practice I play our #2 every single day and he is good (top 35 in socal) but stylistically I match up well with him and on average it's 6-1 or 6-2. I get worse and then when I go to tournaments I have worse results. My coach is a really nice guy but he's not flexible and I am not allowed to miss ANYTHING; not even once a week for a lesson.

we whine because our efforts to win are sometimes overlooked, and other times, misunderstood.

we whine if coach, for some mysterious reason, decided to break up two of our most winningnest doubles teams our hs has ever seen, and weaken our line up.

we whine because coach has a tendency to use tennis players as starters, tennis players who are worse than JV, tennis players who would have brought down the team...

for some of us who desires to win every time in tennis, we are cursed with coaches of poor leadership or questionable management skills. It is they who decide the lineup, they who decides the policies, they who inspires the less experienced players to win. Tennis is a very individual sport, but in high school and college, it is a team sport as well.

we play to win.

but how can we play to win when coach refuses to let some of us practice privately one day or two a month in order to strengthen the depth of our team?

how can we play well knowing you're going to have to REALLY pull your own weight and your partner's weight in doubles? (yes, mentality is part of it, but doesn't the partner is responsible for half the shots in doubles, eh?)

how can we not whine when no matter how many miles you run, how many days you workout and get fit, how many days you strengthen your mind mentally, you cannot win because there are not enough challenging matches/people to play with during practice, and that coach would not let you go to your private coach to help fix the mistakes/erros, and thuus, strengthen the lineup?

how can we not whine when coach puts in, and keeps, extremely liable players into the lineup, considering there are MUCH BETTER and dedicated players willing to play to win, play for the team...

why can we not whine then, if you give 110% effort, sweep all three of your sets despite the really challenging opponents, then find out your own team lost because coach has myopia and decided to mix up the doubles lineup on GAME DAY?

there are millions of tennis coaches, like kaptain karl, i'm pretty sure, are good men/women, and have superb leadership skills, inspiration, and are willing to lead despite setbacks, and learn from their mistakes.

but there are other coaches, no matter how many times fate has handed them the consequences, never learn from there mistakes.

i even considered about quitting hs tennis. i whine too much, and i will stand by my arguments. i talked to my own coach privately about the issues i, he, the team may face. He HEARS what i say, then resumes to his old, clueless self. indecisive. 2 years in fact. this year may have been a good year for us (we are 8-0, 3-0 in league at the moment) but we had a VERY close calls, thanks to coach's misplacement of the lineup and lack of clue of what weakness some of use ACTUALLY possess.. then again, i wish not to let my team down. i wish to inspire my team to win. i try and try and try to win, make everyone happy. i will not flake off for my own benefit...that is selfish.

team tennis is the SAME as other team sports, such as soccer, basketball, etc.... because we play AS A TEAM. for a coach to leave other players to fend off for themselves during practice, then to blame them for the team's loss is simply just criminal. Team tennis is a team sport. we must work together to succeed.

kaptain karl, i do not mean to target you or anything, and i certainly do NOT intend to act like a spoiled brat... this is an issue i sincerly am battling and worry about. i speak FAR from it.

i just want to give everyone heads up of what issues may arise....if they havn't been seen/heard/experienced lately.

happy weekend folks,

Depends on the coach. If you have a great coach, you will improve. If he sucks, then it won't help at all.

The best coaches I've seen (the guys that win the best coach award in the district or league) usually ends up focusing on the fitness aspect of tennis though, and then just has kids play and offers tactical advice. They rarely jump into how kids hit the ball, and instead rely on kids already having mechanics that work for them.

In the end, its whether the coach makes you work hard I guess.

Ditto.

We lost our very first match Tuesday. It sucked. It suddenly became hot, so our #1 doubles did not play so hot. During that game, it became extremely clear that some of the team's faults (i.e. double-player placement, rigor of training, strategy, etc...) are the fault of the coach. We lost to a team we really could have beat.

As for the coach, he decided to have me bench warm the whole game, while substituting in a horrid player with another horrid player.

The subbed in horrid player eventually cost us the entire team's win. It was tragic, especially the way he and his partner threw away their match-point lead.

I really don't care about high school tennis anymore... I feel useless in the team. The #1 doubles players tried to persuade coach to put me in into full-time play. Now i am just a lousy benchwarmer, knowing that my game (physical and mental) is fully sound, but not knowing why (i even asked my coach) coach treats me like crap now. And, to make it clear, i have absolutely nothing against the coach at all, person-wise.

I really don't care now.

What i do care about is trying to win for my team, and being part of a tennis team that has the potential to win their first league championship in about a decade. and i mean, one decade.

Who knows. I feel that months of preperation of the high school tennis season is just absolutely wasted. At least i still possess a winning record.

my high school coach knows we have private coaches and he is fine with it but i still make it to our practices which are nothing in the end because it lasts about an hour and hes more of a coordinator then a coach....which is great
