The End of Professional Line Umpires?

@sureshs What you’re obviously missing by my point is there is an atmosphere, a nostalgia that is absent without the human element of line judges present. It creates theatre. Have you been to a professional match? It is your idol Nadal that favors line judges. He is old-fashioned like myself and some others I suppose. I prefer to talk to a human at a store or restaurant as opposed to a screened kiosk.

Yes and no. These days stores and restaurants are often staffed by those on the move to some other job. Especially stores. The workers there know far less about a product than I can find info on the Internet. Hey even doctors and surgeons need to be supplemented by info from the Internet. They neither know nor tell you everything. And after the pandemic, I might permanently not like to have strangers next to me.

Fat line judges take up real estate and look terrible next to the fit players.

I am not a player like Nadal who has had personal experiences over the years with line judges. I just watch on TV and in person at some tournaments.

If the pay is poor and the training is worse then, yes, people will try to move on. I remember how shocked people were at how little a new hire here got!
